Chapter 4: Roommates in Ramshackle Dorm
(Y/n) stared at the rundown dorm that Headmage Crowley had claimed to have some character in it. "This is where you want me to stay? This has more character than you claimed." Headmage Crowley just smiled. "Isn't it delightful? Right, scoot inside now. There you go." He ushered her inside the dorm. Once inside, she can see more of the dorm's lounge. And let's just say that it wasn't up to date. "This should keep the elements at bay for the time being. Now, I should return to my research. Do try to find some way to busy yourself. But don't let me catch you wandering the campus! Ta!" He waved before he left.
(Y/n) stared at the lounge. "Okay, maybe I can make this work. All it needs is a bit of cleaning." She looks at the lounge again. "...Maybe more than a good clean." (Y/n) went to the closet and found some cleaning supplies. She decided that maybe a sweep could help. As she continued to clean, she heard some thunder from outside. "Looks like it's raining." (Y/n) just shrugged her shoulders as she went back to cleaning.
"GWAH! It's pouring out there!" A familiar voice startled (Y/n) as she yelped. Turns out that Grim had sneaked his way back inside the school. "Bwahaha! That look on your face is priceless! Like a bat that got blasted by a water gun." Grim pointed his paw at (Y/n) and laughed. She glares at the small feline. "Did you seriously sneak back in?"
"As if I wouldn't just sneak back onto campus the second I escaped pryin' eyes. You all got no idea what I'm capable of!" Grim placed his paws on his hips. "I ain't givin' up on goin' here just 'cause I got kicked out one measly ol' time. And if you think otherwise, you don't know Grim!"
(Y/n) pulled out her tessen war fan. "Give me a reason why I shouldn't put you in a tornado again?" Grim shrieks at the thought. "Hey! No! Bad human! BAD HUMAN!" He crossed his arms. "Ain't you gonna ask what I'm doin' here? That's what you people do, right? Talk about feeling and stuff? Just what kinda human are ya, anyway? It wouldn't kill ya to listen to me! Right?!"
(Y/n) lowered her weapons. "Okay, why are you trying to get into this school?" Grim smiled. "I was born to do this! I'm a magical prodigy who's got the makin's to become one of the greatest mages who ever lived! So I've been waitin' and waitin' for that black carriage to come for me.
And yet..." Grim lowers his ears in sadness. "Hrmph! That Dark Mirror's got no eye for talent! That's why I took the initiative and came here myself. You humans don't understand what a mistake you're makin'! Not lettin' me in is a great loss to the world!"
Suddenly a raindrop fell on Grim's nose. "Mrrao! C'mon, scoot over! I'm getting dripped on here!" Another raindrop fell on his head. "Bwah! Another hole in the roof! These flamin' ears are like my trademark, y'know? I can't let 'em get doused!" Grim tried to cover his ears. (Y/n) looks up at the ceiling. "Looks like I'll need to find some buckets." As she was walking off, Grim followed her. "I dunno why you don't just magic those holes away. You could have it fixed in half a jiff. Ahhh, right. You can't use magic at all. Pffft, man you're useless." Grim laughed. (Y/n) stopped walking and kneeled to Grim's level. "Why don't you try to fix it yourself if you're so strong?"
"Heh? You want ME to help YOU? Ha! You got the wrong idea. I'm just a stranger takin' shelter from the rain. You ain't the boss of me. If ya had some cans of tuna to trade, well, that'd be another story. But I don't work for free." Grim spoke. "How about this? You help me find some buckets and clean so you can stay here or I throw you out in the rain. A fair deal?" (Y/n) smirked. Grim shuddered at the thought of being in the rain. "Okay! Ya got yourself a deal!"
Grim and (Y/n) decided to split up to cover more ground. As (y/n) was walking down the halls, tried to be carefully not to trip on anything. She summons her blue flame to help light her path. "Now, where could those buckets be?" She asked herself. She noticed how dirty and old the hallway was compared to the lounge. "This place could surely use a makeover"
Suddenly she heard something from behind. It sounded like laughter.
"Yee hee hee... Bwa ha ha ha ha"
She turns to find no one behind her. "Grim?" She turns to walk back over to find herself face-to-face with three ghosts. She shrieks at their sudden appearance.
"We haven't had visitors in ages!"
"Oh, I'm just itchin' for new friends!"
"Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha!"
(Y/n) screamed as she stepped back from them. Grim finally comes over to see what is happening. "Hey, keep it down over-AAAAAH! GHOSTS! GHOOOOOOSTS!" He runs up and hides behind (Y/n)'s leg.
"All the people who used to live here got scared of us and ran away." The smallest ghost spoke. "We just want a new ghost to play with! What do you say, buddy?" A bigger ghost asked mischievously. (Y/n) just stared at the ghosts in front of her. She walks towards them. "Wah! What are you doing?!" Grim pulls on her leg. "Wait, ghost as in souls, right?" (Y/n) pointed to them. "Well, that's one way to call us. Hehehe." The skinny ghost laughed. "Woah! Amazing! You three are quite different from the souls back home." (Y/n) smiles. "Really?" The ghosts floated around her as they wanted to hear more of the ghost back in her world. "I'd be happy to tell you all about it. Actually, could you help us find some buckets? We need them for the rain." (Y/n) told. The ghost happily agreed if they heard more about the souls from her home.
Once they put the buckets in place, the ghost helped Grim and (Y/n) clean up the lounge. "...and also, my grandfather is able to control the souls." (Y/n) finished speaking about her grandfather. "That's crazy to have someone control souls like that!" Grim stopped cleaning the table. "Oooh! Sounds spooky." The small ghost laughed. "I guess it can be when grandfather overworks himself."(Y/n) turned to the ghosts. "You know, we didn't give ourselves a proper introduction. I am Princess (Y/n) of Outworld. And this is Grim." (Y/n) smiled "What are your names?"
The ghost a moment before one of them spoke. "You know, we completely forgot. We have been ghosts for a long time."
"How about I give you guys names?" (Y/n) suggested as the ghosts happily agreed. She pointed at the skinny ghosts. "I'll call you Ezra." She pointed at the big ghost. "I'll call you Phineas." She pointed at the small ghost. "And I'll call you Gus."
(Fun fact I named the ghosts after the hitchhiking ghosts of the haunted mansions.)
"We love it!" Gus smiled. "Thank you for our names!" Phineas smiled. "Yes, thank you!" Ezra smiled.
(Y/n) giggles at their excitement as they all continue to clean and hear more about her home. Before (Y/n) could tell her more about her home, Headmage Crowley arrived with a bag of food. "Good evening. In another gesture of my immense kindness, I have brought you dinner." His eyes widen when he notices Grim. "Wait. That's the creature we ejected for causing trouble at orientation! What is it doing here?!" (Y/n) just ignored him as she took the bag. She pulls out an apple and gives it to Grim. He takes a bite of the fruit. "Takin' care of yer ghost problem, that's what. You're welcome, by the way!" (Y/n) shakes her head as she eats a piece of melon. "More like I befriended them while you hid behind my leg." Headmage Crowley crossed his arms. "What is the meaning of this, (Y/n)?" (Y/n) rubbed the temple of her head as she explained everything that happened. Headmage Crowley then spoke up. "But you know, on that topic, I do seem to recall that this dorm had a mischievous ghost problem. Ah, yes... That's why it was abandoned, in fact. The ghosts scared away all the students." He shrugged his shoulders. "Are you kidding me right now?" (Y/n) glares at the man. "And you're saying that you two joined forces to drive them away?" He asked. "Didn't you listen? We befriended the ghosts. And they're not that bad." (Y/n) crossed her arms. ""Joined forces" ain't exactly how I'd describe it. More like this human just talked to them and helped us clean up. And I only did it 'cause I wanted some tuna." Grim added. "Hey... Wait a minute! I never got those cans of tuna ya promised!" Grim yelled. "I never promised any tuna." (Y/n) gives him a blank face.
"Would you two be so kind as to demonstrate your ghost-eradication methods for me?" Headmage Crowley asked. "One, no, 'cause I already wiped 'em all out. And two, no, 'cause where's my tuna?!" Grim refuses the request. "I will play the part of the ghosts. As for the tuna, you'll receive it when you defeat me. Oh, what generosity, Crowley..." Headmage Crowley then pulls out a small potion bottle. "Now, to chug this transmutation potion!" He drinks the potion and transforms into a ghost. "Woah, that's something new." (Y/n)'s eyes widen. "Ah, you gotta be kiddin' me. I gotta work together with the human again?" Grim whined. "You know, Grim. This could be your chance to get into the school." (Y/n) persuaded. Grim's ears perked up. "Hrmph. All right, but this is the last time. And I better be up to my jowls in tuna afterwards!"
(Y/n) and Grim got ready to fight off Headmage Crowley. Grim shoots out his fire and (Y/n) has her tessen war fan to summon wind and fire. Headmage Crowley kept appearing and disappearing to dodge the attacks. (Y/n) told Grim that they had to surround Headmage Crowley. She had Grim go to the left while she went to the right. On her signal, they summoned their fire and trapped Headmage Crowley in a fire ring. Grim pants in exhaustion. "Well?" Once the fire was gone, Headmage Crowley transformed back to normal. "Incredible... I've never seen anyone bend a monster to their will quite the way you have." He then hums in thought. "I must confess, my educator's intuition did sense something about you after the brouhaha at orientation, (Y/n). I could tell you had a certain animal trainer-y, beast master-ish quality to you. Oh, yes. That said, I..." He then begins to mumble to himself.
"Actually, sir. Would it be possible for Grim to stay here with me?" (Y/n) asked. "WHAT? A monster, stay HERE?" Headmage Crowley questioned. Grim walked up to (Y/n). "Whoa, did you just...?"
"Come on, please! He did help me beat you." (Y/n) added. Headmage Crowley thought. "Hmmm...I suppose I cannot deny your plea. Very well." He allowed it. "Myah?! Really?" Grim was surprised. "Let me be clear! Under no circumstances would I admit anyone to Night Raven College who has not been selected by the Dark Mirror - especially not a monster! Nor do I intend to allow you, (Y/n), to freeload until you're able to return home." Headmage Crowley stated. Grim's ears flopped. "Hrmph. Never shoulda got my hopes up..."
"Now, allow me to explain. It was the Dark Mirror that transported you here. Therefore this school does bear some responsibility for your well-being. So I will allow you to remain in this dorm, free of charge." Headmage Crowley stated to (Y/n). "However, you will need to pay for your own food, clothing, and incidentals. As to how you will do so, penniless as you are..." He then laughs as he thinks of a plan. "Ah. Ah ha. Yes, a fine plan."
(Y/n) narrowed her eyes at the man and placed her hand on her hip. "And what exactly are you planning to make me do? It better not be anything sketchy." She crossed her arms. Headmage Crowley shook his head. "Of course not! You needn't seem so alarmed. I'm simply going to ask you to do a few odd jobs around campus. From what you've done here, (Y/n), I can tell you know your way around a broom. So what do you say to you two working together as a janitorial team?" (Y/n) just stared at the man before he continued. "If you agree to that, I will make a special exception and allow you to remain on campus. I'll also allow you use of the library, so that you may study, and research ways to return home. How soundlessly charitable I am." He smiled.
'Yeah, I'm already tired of this man. And it's not even a full day.' (Y/n) thought to herself.
"Ah, but only when your work is over, of course!" Headmage Crowley added. Grim then whines again. "Whaaat? What kinda deal is that?! I wanna put on one of those sweet uniforms and be a student, not sweep up people's junk!" Headmage Crowley leans towards Grim. "If you're not satisfied with my offer, I can arrange to have you thrown out again." Grim panicked. "Myah?! ... All right, fine! Let's do it." (Y/n) shrugged her shoulders. "Seems fair though it's not like I have any other choice."
"Wonderful. Then I beseech you both...To work hard as the newest members of the Night Raven College's janitorial staff!" Headmage Crowley exclaimed.
Once he left, (Y/n) and Grim found a room and used it to rest up for the night. As (Y/n) tucks herself in, Grim towards the bed. He clears his throat. "You know, you might need more protection at night..." He looks at the floor sheepishly. (Y/n) smiled at him as she patted a spot next to her. Grim happily hops on the bed and falls asleep. (Y/n) patted his head before she fell asleep.
It was morning as Grim and (Y/n) were sleeping peacefully. Until they were awakened by three certain ghosts "Hee hee hee... Aren't the two of you supposed to be off cleaning the school today?" Ezra asked. "Mmmmm... Nngh... Five more minutes..." Grim buried his head into the pillow. "Go ahead, sleep the day away. And you might not eeever hafta wake up again." Gus said. "Just like us! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!" Phineas laughed. Grim then woke up and freaked out. "Myah?! The ghosts are back! Hey, (Y/n), up and at 'em!" (Y/n) yawned as she rubbed the sleepiness from her eyes. "Oh! Good morning you four!" She smiled. She got up and went to put on her kombat attire.
"So I hear you'll be living here from now on? Hope you like pranks as much as we do! Hya ha ha!" Ezra gave a mischievous laugh. (Y/n) chuckled. "Well, jokes on you three. I have three siblings so I know my way around pranks." Grim frowns at the ghosts. "We gotta get rid of those things for good!"
Suddenly, Headmage Crowley knocks on the door before entering. "Good morning, (Y/n). Did you sleep well?" He asked. "Not at all! When I sprawled out on the bed, the mattress fell right through the frame! Exactly how ramshackle IS this dorm?" Grim pouts as he crosses his little arms. "And worse yet, we got woken up by ghosts!" He then exclaimed. "Surprisingly, I slept fine." (Y/n) shrugged. "I am delighted to hear that you've adjusted so well, despite being sent another world!" Headmage Crowley smiled. "Now, speaking of moving on, let us discuss your assignment for today." He told. Now, the three of them moved their conversation to the lounge. "Your job today is to clean the campus. That said, the campus is vast, and without magic, it'd be quite the Herculean task to clean it all. Therefore, today I'll have you focus on the area spanning from the front gates to the library." Headmage Crowley gave the instructions. He then turns to (Y/n). "Now, (Y/n). I do expect that you'll keep a close eye on Grim, lest he cause another incident like yesterday." (Y/n) nodded. "Understood, sir."
"Do not fail me. You may take your lunch in the cafeteria. I eagerly await the fruits of your labor." Then Headmage Crowley takes his leave. Grim frowns. "Hrmph. I ain't cleanin' nothin'! I'm here to study magic so I can be blastin' off spells left and right! Like BAM! POW! FWOOM!" (Y/n) chuckles as she patted his head. "Don't worry, Grim. Once we're done cleaning, we'll go to the library to see what spells we can learn." Grim continued to pout.
