Chapter 27 Heartslabyul and Ramshackle Investigators

Once arriving in Heartslabyul, Ace was the first to knock on Trey's door. "Yo, man, how's it going?" He opened the door as the others followed. The she-beasts went over to Trey's bed as they looked at him with concern in their eyes. "How are you feeling, Trey?" Deuce asked. "We came all this way just to see your sorry face. It's cool—don't get up." Grim told. "Well, if it isn't A-Deuce combi! And Grim, (Y/n), and the she-beasts too! You're rolling deep today." Cater smiled. "Hey, Cater... I'm lost. Whaddaya mean by "A-Deuce combi"? Ace asked. "I mean it's you guys! You're Ace, he's Deuce—that's what you call an Ace Deuce in poker!" Cater happily explained. "Don't give us a couple nickname!" Deuce pouts. (Y/n) couldn't help but giggle at the nickname Cater gave them. Ace shakes his head at Cater. "Riiight... Anyway, how d'you feel, Trey? And how'd you get hurt?"

"Slipped on the stairs. I couldn't catch myself, and my ankle got all messed up. I'll be on crutches for a while." Trey pointed to the crutches next to his bed. "Yikes. That sounds pretty bad!" Deuce exclaimed with sympathy. " Are you sure you're alright, Trey?" (Y/n) closer to Trey and examined his cast. Trey gave her a reassuring smile. "Yep. I'm alright now. And it looks like I'll be warming the bench at the Spelldrive tournament this year." Grim hops on the bed with a canned tuna. "Myah... I was hopin' your injury would be small enough for me to justify keepin' this, but..." He puts the can on Trey's lap. "Here. I brought ya a get-well can of tuna. Feel better, specs." Trey patted Grim's head. "Heh. Thanks."

"Hey, (N/n). Do you think you can use that healing power of yours to fix Trey's leg?" Cater ask. "I could try." (Y/n) walked over to Trey's bed. She then summoned her blue flames as she let the warmth of the fire wrap around his leg. But no such luck. She was able to bring the swelling down more. "I'm sorry. Father was still teaching me to heal bones. I could only heal cuts and bruises for now. I'm sorry, Trey." She frowns. Trey smiled as he reached out for her hand and held it. "No worry, (N/n). You gave it your best shot."

"Ugh, hashtag #fail! Now that we've lost a power player, we have to redo our team roster!" Cater shakes his head. "Wait, what?!" Deuce and Ace exclaimed with a small smile. (Y/n) stands next to them as she elbows them both in the stomachs. They both hissed in pain. Riddle comes in with some pillows at hand. "Why are there so many people in here? Trey is supposed to be resting!" He sets the pillows on Trey's bed. "Myah! It's Ragin' Riddle!" Grim quickly hid behind (Y/n)'s legs. "Grim, enough." (Y/n) scolded. "I am not "raging." I will be perfectly pleasant if you obey the rules!" Riddle glares. He then turns his attention back to Trey. "How are you doing, Trey? Can I bring you anything to eat or drink?"

"I told you, Riddle: you don't need to fuss over me like this." Trey waved his hand dismissively. "But it's my fault that you got hurt." Riddle frowned. "What? He didn't tell us that part!" Ace was surprised. "I needed to talk to him, so I went to the junior classroom at lunch. And then..." Riddle then explained everything that happened.

FLASHBACK

At the stairways, Riddle and Trey were having a chat before they would go their separate ways. "I'm going to be late today, so go ahead and start practice without me." Riddle told. "Sure, will do." Trey nodded.

"All right, I'll see you—" Riddle was walking down the stairs when he suddenly lost his balance and was about to fall. "Wh-whoooa!" He braced himself for impact. "Riddle, look out!" Trey quickly caught him and broke Riddle's fall. Which included Trey injuring his leg in the process.

FLASHBACK END

"Trey never would have slipped if he hadn't caught me when I was about to tumble over." Riddle finished explaining. "Yeah, but if I hadn't, you would have just broken your fall with a flight spell. It was stupid of me to intervene. So you don't owe me anything." Trey added. "Still, I..." Riddle still blamed himself for what happened to Trey. Ace went closer to (Y/n) and whispered to her. "Hey, (Y/n), d'you think...?" (Y/n) nodded at him. "These accidents aren't real accidents."

Cater picked up on their conversation and quickly put his hands on Riddle's shoulders. "Riddle, come on! It's not gonna do anyone any good to have you harshing the vibe here. It's lame that Trey got hurt, but you'll rock the field that much harder to make up for him, right?" Cater tried to cheer him up. "Well, I suppose that's true." Riddle slowly nodded. Cater then walked over to Ace and Deuce as he gently pushed them out the door. "All right, peeps, we should let Trey get his rest. Out, out, out!" As they were leaving one by one, (Y/n) stayed behind and bowed her head. "Again, I'm so sorry I couldn't properly heal you, Trey." Trey smiled at her. "Don't worry about it, (Y/n). You were able to bring the swelling down more so it'll heal faster." (Y/n) smiled back at him. She goes up to him and kisses him on the cheek. "Hope you feel better soon, Trey." He blushed at her. "Yeah, thanks." As she left, the she-beasts were the last ones in the room with him. They gave him a knowing smirk. "What's with the looks, you four?" He asked. They gave him an innocent smile as they followed the others out.

In the Heartslabyul lounge, everyone took their seats as they all stared at Cater. "All right, Cater. Was there something you didn't want to tell me in front of Trey?" Riddle questioned. "You're always a step ahead of me, Riddle. I get the feeling (Y/n) & co. know something about it. Want to fill us in?" Cater pointed at (Y/n). The princess of Outworld takes a deep breath and lets it out. "I suppose I should start from the beginning..." She then explained what the headmage had assigned her to the strange accidents many students have faced.

"Ah... So the headmage asked you to investigate." Riddle rubbed his chin. "I knew it. Grim coming by for a get-well visit? That's just plain sus." Cater smirked. "I must admit that I found the circumstances odd as well. I've had Cater looking into it for me." Riddle told. "And I found out that all of the victims have been talented players like Riddle and Trey." Cater pulled out his phone. "To be clear, it wasn't as if I had been pushed, or that I had tripped. But I did feel a peculiar sensation, like...my body was moving of its own volition." Riddle added more detail to Trey's accident.

"The other victims said basically the same thing!" Grim told. "I believe we can safely surmise that potential Spelldrive tournament players are being targeted." Riddle made his hypnosis. " I wouldn't be surprised if these accidents are some form of sabotage to each player." (Y/n) crossed her arms as her she-beasts growled at the thought of someone cheating on the tournament. "You think someone is causin' accidents to take out threats from the tournament?" Ace questioned. "The whole world will be watching. A good performance can make a player's whole career. It's no surprise that some would resort to underhanded methods to even the odds." Riddle stood up from his seat as he paced.

"Sure, but it doesn't make much sense. I mean, you'd know if you got pushed off the stairs by a gust of wind magic or somethin', right?" Cater asked as he shrugged his shoulders. Riddle stopped his pacing. "Certainly. I felt no external force." Cater then nodded his head. "And some of the other victims had accidents in the classroom! How do you explain that?"

"The culprit can tell us all about it when we capture him. And we intend to help you do that." Riddle turns to (Y/n). "Really? Are you sure?" (Y/n) stood up from her seat. Grim climbs on her shoulder. "Myah? YOU'RE gonna help us?! What's your angle?" She flicks Grim's forehead. "You offend us, sir. One of our housemates was injured—why wouldn't we help him find justice?" Cater pointed. "We're all house-buds here. Count us in." Ace stood up from his seat and he joined in as he smirked. "He's gonna pay for what he did to Trey!" Riddle rolled his eyes at them. "You two seem enthusiastic about this." Cater gave them a smirk. "Ahhh... I get it. You're running for that open spot on our team, aren't you?" Ace nervously scratches his cheek. "Heh. Was it that obvious?" Deuce quickly shook his head. "N-no! That had nothing to do with it! I just want to avenge our housemate!" Riddle sighed as he rolled his eyes again. "Fine... Your performance during the investigation will be taken into account."

"Woo-hoo!" Ace and Deuce cheered. "I'm surrounded by idiots." (Y/n) mumbled with a smile. "Now, if we're going to apprehend this culprit, we need to stay a step ahead of him." Riddle explained. "And we're gonna do that HOW, exactly...?" Grim pointed as he walked closer to Riddle. "By predicting which student will be targeted next and covertly following him. Should the culprit strike, we will protect the target and then immediately pursue the attacker." Riddle looked down at Grim first before he turned towards the others. "So we must conduct a stakeout. I agree with this plan." (Y/n) crossed her arms as she smirked. "Bingo! I've already identified a number of potential targets from among the most promising players. I'll form a group on Magicam so we can coordinate our efforts and then give you access to the album." Cater wrapped his arm around (Y/n). He pulled out his phone again as he made a group chat with the others.

"Whoa, Cater, this is a ton of information!" Deuce's eyes widen. "Now, let's move!" Cater cheered. Grim hopped on (Y/n)'s shoulders and pushed Cater away. "Let's nail this creep!"

Everyone made their way out of Heartslabyul. Once they were in the Hall of Mirrors, they entered the mirror where it leads to Pomefiore. They quietly made their way inside the dorm. Cater pulled out his phone. "Let's start here, at Pomefiore. There's a junior named Rook Hunt who's caught my eye." He showed his phone to (Y/n). "He has a blond bob cut and a fedora—you can't miss him." Riddle stands next to her and adds. "Rook is an exceptional player. He performed extremely well in last year's tournament. But he is a bit of an...odd duck, one might say." (Y/n) turns to him. "Why do you say that?" Then Deuce pointed at three students in the lounge. "Oh, is that him sitting over there?" Ace's eyes widen at the Pomefiore students. "Whoa. That dude's, like, a glitter bomb in human form. He's basically sparkling."

"Non, Epel, non. When you lift your teacup, do not insert your finger through the handle. It is most inélégant." Rook gently scolded. "Oh... Right. I'm sorry." Epel quickly corrected himself. Vil sighed as he reviewed the cosmetics on his phone. "I just cannot decide how I want to do my makeup on tournament day!! I'm thinking maybe that new foundation from Felicity Cosmetics?" Rook chuckles. "Oh ho ho! Mon belle Vil, the Roi du Poison...Surely your beauté is not so faint that you need makeup to shine?"

"Of course I don't. But I don't dare miss an opportunity to accentuate it further!" Vil answered. "I admire that passion. Magnifique! Très magnifique!" Rook smiled. "Oh, I see." (Y/n) nodded at what Riddle meant. Grim groans as his ears are flat down. "Uhhhhh... And you're sayin' this guy is some kinda incredible athlete? Somehow, I doubt he's gonna be the target." Cater nodded his head. "Yeaaah, maybe we should peace out and move on." Everyone quickly made their way out of Pomefiore before anyone could see them.

After their investigation in Pomefiore, Cater guided them to the  Courtyard to find their next potential target of the accidents. Cater pulled out his phone again. "Next on Cay-Cay's big list of potential targets are Jade Leech and his twin brother Floyd. They're both sophomores at Octavinelle House." He shows his phone to (Y/n) again. She smiled at the thought of someone sharing the same name as someone she knew back home. "Word is, they work so well together on the field that other teams don't know how to counter them." Everyone was able to find them easily due to their tall size. Grim's eyes widen at the twins as he hops down from (Y/n)'s shoulder. "Whoa! They have, like, the exact same face!" (Y/n) rolled her eyes as Kiki did the same next to Grim. "They're identical twins, Grim. Of course, they would have the same face."

"Is it just me, or do they make all the other students look tiny in comparison? They're giants!" Ace's eyes widen at the twins' height. "I could see that being a big advantage for 'em." Grim's head slowly went up to see their height. "So what do we think? Could they be in danger?" Ace questioned. "I don't know about that. If I were the culprit, I'd save them for last. Just look at those two. I wouldn't want to get anywhere near them—especially Floyd." Riddle told. "Should I ask why on Floyd?" (Y/n) asked. Suddenly, Floyd appeared behind Riddle and (Y/n). "Oh ho ho! What is UP, Lil' Goldfish?" Riddle quickly hid behind (Y/n) as he held her arm. "Bwah! He spotted us!"

"What brings you to our humble abode, huh? Playing hide-and-seek? Sounds like fun." Floyd smiled down at everyone. "F-Floyd... I've asked you several times to stop calling me by strange nicknames." Riddle pointed his finger at Floyd as he let go of (Y/n)'s arm. "But you're so small and red! How are you NOT a goldfish?" Floyd shrugged his shoulders. "This guy seems like he's a few cans short of a tuna casserole." Grim tilted his head. Kiki stands next to him as she coos in curiosity. "A talking cat? A small raccoon? Now THAT'S something you don't see every day! Can I squeeze you 'til you pop?" Floyd moved closer to the small creatures. Kiki shrieks in fear and hops into Riddle's arms. Grim's eyes widened and he quickly hid behind's legs. "Uh, no?! Stay away from me, weirdo!" Then Floyd's brother, Jade walked in. "My, it would appear a contingent from Heartslabyul House has paid us a little visit. Here to assess the competition in advance of the Spelldrive tournament, perhaps?"

"Nah. We...can't really go into it, though." Cater puts his hands out as he rapidly shakes his head. "We take a dim view of spying at Octavinelle. I would ask you to justify your actions, suspicious as they are. And please, spare no detail." Jade smirked. "This guy sure talks fancy, but man, his eyes are stone cold." Ace spoke in fear. "Man, would you look at the time? Gotta run, guys! It's been real! Byeee!" Cater quickly grabbed hold of (Y/n)'s arms as he beyond made a run for it. Deuce quickly gets a hold of Grim while Riddle still had Kiki secured in his arms. The Leech twins smirked at each other as they chased after the others.

"Shoot! They're chasing us!" Deuce yelled. "Hey, couldja stop, friends? Just for a second? We just wanna chat!" Floyd joked as he tried to reach for them. "Decidedly, no! Full retreat!" Riddle exclaimed as Kiki rapidly nodded in agreement in his arms. "I go this!" (Y/n) pulled out one of her weapons and used her Edenian wind magic to push the Leech twins away. Both Floyd and Jade fell from the sudden wind pushing them back. They were both stunned at what happened. Seeing that the others had escaped, Floyd couldn't help but laugh. "Awww... They're gone. And that girl sure is something!" Jade joined in the laughter. "Heh heh. I agree, the princess from the other world is quite strong. I do so enjoy a brisk midday jog. Alas, we'll have to pick this up another time. Come. We need to prepare the lounge for tonight." Jade stood up and dusted his pants. Floyd rolled his eyes as he got up. "Bummer. But all right."

The others made it to Main Street and stopped to rest from running. Grim pants from the adrenaline. "... That was terrifying. What is the deal with those guys?!" He exclaimed. "I'm not the one to ask. Those two have baffled me since we were freshmen together." Riddle wiped his forehead. Kiki climbs up his shoulders. "Messing with them seems like a reeeal bad idea." Cater said. "You have a tight grip, Cater." (Y/n) rubbed her wrist. "Sorry about that." Cater apologized. "If I were the culprit, I know I'D steer clear." Ace pointed out. "Then it's off to the next name on my list! It's getting late, so let's make this the last one for today, 'kay?" Cater pulled out his phone. (Y/n) looks over since he's already sharing with her. "It's Jack Howl: freshman, Savanaclaw Dorm. Rumor has it that he's a great athlete. Scouts from all the major teams are fighting to sign him."

"Classes are over, so he should be at his dorm." Deuce suggested. "Oh, is it 5:00 already? Rule 346 says that "croquet must not be played after 5:00 p.m." I should head back to Heartslabyul and make sure that no one is breaking the rules in my absence." Riddle hands Kiki back to (Y/n). "Tch. I thought you'd rounded out some, but nope, you're as square as ever." Grim shook his head. "Grim, hush!" (Y/n) scolded. "Th-that's not true! I assure you that I've become much more lenient about enforcing the rules." Riddle defended himself. "He really has. He's way nicer than before. And we all appreciate that Riddle diligence. So go do what you gotta do, Boss!" Cater smiled. Riddle nodded back as walked off. (Y/n) caught up to him and placed her hand on his shoulder. "Riddle, remember to take care of yourself too. Don't push yourself too hard." She smiled. Riddle smiled back as he squeezed her hand. "Thank you, (Y/n)." He lets go of her hand and walks back to Heartslabyul. Once he was gone, everyone turned their attention back to their investigation. "Then I guess the rest of us are headed to Savanaclaw House." Ace told. Just like that, everyone headed towards the Hall of Mirrors and entered inside Savanaclaw Dorm.
