Chapter 6: Talk About Shallow

Sometime later, Jack and Ace arrive and they've been brought up to speed about their mission.

"I have to sneak into the fairies' party to save the school!?" Jack asks, shocked. And angrily says, "This is ridiculous, Leona! You can't just volunteer me for an important job without asking first!"

"What a vehement opposition! I trust you explained the matter properly?" Crowley says.

Leona sighs and says, "Cut the yapping. You could learn a thing or two from the herbivore next to you."

Ace is dumbfounded by the whole thing.

"Look at him, as quiet and still as a tortoise," Leona says.

Then Ace says, "Real talk, I'm not a fan of this either. But the housewarden was all like..."

Flashback:

At the Heartslabyul Dorm's Rose Maze, Riddle explains what Ace needs to do, "I selected you for this critical mission because I hold you in such high esteem. Surely you wouldn't refuse. Isn't that right, Ace?"

"Uhh..." Ace replies, dumbfounded.

"Well?!" Riddle sternly questions.

Ace responds in defeat, "Ugh... Yes, Housewarden..."

Flashback Ends:

"Did you have a dispute before coming here?" Crowley asks.

"Uh, YEAH!" Ace answers with a shouts, "I tried to say no, and he got so mad he nearly had my head!" And groans, "Ughhh. I should've suspected he was gonna drop some lousy job on me when I saw what a good mood he was in. That's what I get for bein' all smug and doing that magic competition."

"Was it that good of a magic trick?" Jack questions.

"It was amateur stuff, really. But still... It was one of the few times the housewarden openly complimented me, so I MAY have gotten carried away," Ace says.

"So you let a little praise go to your head. Man, talk about shallow," Jack says.

He then says, "Look, count me out. This is the school's problem, not mine. You guys can clean your own tails. There's nothing I hate more than gettin' chummy with others."

Leona remains silent.

"Anyway, I'm going back to the dorm," Jack says.

But then Leona says, "...Jack. This mission isn't about palling around. In fact, it requires the exact opposite."

"Huh?" Jack responds, confused.

Then Leona says, "What we need is someone who can lead the pack. Someone with solid judgment and initiative. I figured you had both of those things... There are a lotta students in Savanaclaw, but I picked YOU."

"Really? 'Cause of my judgment and initiative...?" Jack asks, a little surprised.

But then Leona says, "Oh well, guess I was wrong. I'll have to find some other freshmen. Sorry for expectin' more out of you. Hmm, who else would be good..."

"Wait!" Jack calls out, "When you put it like that, how could I refuse? You say this is something only I can do? Then I'll make sure it gets done!"

"Glad to hear it," Leona replies.

"Now who's shallow?" Ace responds, stunned.

"Howl, Trappola, I trust you both accept?" Crowley asks.

Ace sighs and says, "Even if I said no, I'd still be miserable tending to the roses and animals in this heat. Okay, fine. Since I'd suffer either way, might as well make sure the housewarden owes me."

"I'll get the job done!" Jack says.

Crowley smiles, "Wonderful! Now that is what I call a fresh evolution, heh! I can finally rest easy while patrolling the school. I'm counting on you boys!"
