Chapter 86: Epilogue for Ignihyde

Ortho happily says, "As of today, I, Ortho Shroud, will be transferring to Night Raven College as a freshman in class C. Happy to be here!"

Everyone in the room exclaims in shock, "WHAT?!"

Epel soon asks, still surprised, "Ortho...you're an android, right?

"Yup. The technical term is technomantic humanoid," Ortho answers.

"And a humanoid can enroll as a student?!" Ace questions.

Soon, Crowley interferes, "Ahem... Ortho Shroud is not strictly human, as you say. But he is the world's first self-aware technomantic humanoid.

"He's self-aware? Then that means... Uh..." Kalim says, surprised. But soon asks, "What DOES that mean?"

"Basically, I possess the same emotions and sense of self that humans do," Ortho says. "I've always had an artificial consciousness and personality that were programmed into me... But something— possibly the lightning bolts you all hit me with-permanently altered my on-board technomantic circuitry. Which created a bug inside my core— it gave me a heart."

And Kalim says, "I still don't get it, but this is a big deal, right?

"Yup. 'I don't get it' is a perfect encapsulation of my current state!" Ortho says. "My brother and I haven't identified the cause of my circuit alterations yet. So since Idia's my creator, I was accepted into the school as his research subject. As things stand, I'm the product of coincidence. But if future research efforts find a way to reproduce what happened to me... It would be a significant contribution to the field of technomantic engineering."

"Magnifique... You are truly a marvel, Ortho," Rook says, very impressed, "Or should I say... Monsieur Wonder!"

"Monsieur Wonder? Is that me?" Ortho asks.

"Indeed," Rook answers, "Your acquiring a heart is surely no coincidence. It is a wonder brought about by the love you and your brother hold for one another! I'm honored to have borne witness to this beautiful miracle."

Then Crowley says, "Many of our students aspire to a career in technomantic engineering, especially in Ignihyde. I'm sure Ortho's presence will be an inspiration to them all. Not to mention... The Shroud family has covered the repair bill for the buildings Styx destroyed, as expected. And they've made substantial contributions toward expanding the school's facilities. So when they asked for Ortho to be formally enrolled as a student, how could I say no?"

Vil, Jami, and Jasper remain silent after that.

"Surprise, surprise," Jamil says.

"It's hardly our place to object if it's a win-win for all parties, I suppose," Vil adds.

"No kidding," Jasper says, rolling his eyes.

Soon, Crowley responds, "AHEM. Given Ortho's humanoid status, he'll be limited in which exams and classes he can take... But he'll be a Night Raven College freshman, just like Briar and the others. I do hope you'll all get along."

Ace smiles, "First a direbeast. Then a girl who was transported from another world and uh, vice versa, who turns out to be an endangered species and a princess. A living doll, and twin dwarf beastmen. A little fairy. Now a humanoid? Are you for real?"

Deuce laughs, "Haha! I bet there's not another arcane academy in the world that offers this kind of experience."

"Well isn't that somethin'! Ah'll be..." Epel says, surprised.

Then Grim says, " It doesn't matter who else joins our class! I'll be sittin' pretty at the top of it!"

"Still, congrats on getting in Ortho!" Tanzanite says.

"Yeah. Cool we can still hang out," Jasper says.

"I agree. I hope we can be friends," Sereia says.

"And I'm glad we can be friends, right Ortho?" Briar replies.

Ortho giggles, "Heheheh. I hope you, me, and my brother can all be friends!"

"No, really... S'cool... Just think of me as a bug or something and pretend I'm not here..." Idia says.

But Ortho is against it, "Come on, Idia! Not this again."

But soon remembers, "Oh, right! We still have to give Briar and the others the things we brought."

"Oh... Yeah. Uh, you guys can have this if you want," Idia says, and presents a box with a game station and controllers.

"What's this big box?" Grim asks.

"Hey, that's a Wonderlink!" Ace says, excited.

"Okay, and what's that?" Grim asks.

"It's the latest game console," Deuce says, "They're so popular, people line up at toy stores to try and snag one whenever a shipment comes in."

"Not for nothin', but I'm p. sure if the troublemakers hadn't put up such a fight..." Idia mutters, "The floors and ceiling wouldn't have gotten those giant holes to start with. But anyway, this is basically a token of apology for you guys having to crash somewhere else while your dorm was being rebuilt." And soon softly speaks up, "But, uh, if you don't like it, feel free to sell it to a secondhand shop or put it up for online auction or whatever."

"Thank you, Idai," Briar says.

"Thank you," Sereia and Tanzanite adds.

"It comes with enough points to buy any 10 games you want from the online store," Ortho says.

"Whoa, really? Now I'm jealous, Briar!" Ace says.

And Ortho says, "We've already loaded up some of our own recommendations. Go on and try them if they pique your interest."

This has Grim excited, "Oo, oo, Briar! I wanna play somethin' right now!"

"Me too," Jasper says.

Even Trinket wants to see.

"Then Idia and I will hook it up. We all might as well help you break it in!" Ortho happily says.

Then Crowley says, "I believe that's my cue to exit. You wouldn't believe the amount of paperwork that's piled up in my absence." But soon remembers and turns to Grim, "...Oh, and Grim?"

"Mrah?" Grim replies, confused.

"How have you felt since coming back from the Island of Woe?" Crowley asks.

"Hm? I ain't been feeling bad, I'll tell ya that," Grim says with a grin, "In fact, I feel downright great! My hospital exams didn't turn up anything wrong either. I've got grit for days! These other dudes got nothin' on me."

"I heard you received cutting-edge blot treatments at Styx HQ," Crowley says. "I was worried for a little while there, but... I'm truly glad that you —ah, that is, ALL of you - made it back to the school safe and sound."

"Are you okay, Crowley? You seem a bit confused about something?" Briar asks.

"Oh, it's nothing for you to worry about. Which also reminds me, how are you feeling, Hawthorne... Or would you rather be called Seerwood..." Crowley replies.

This has the rest a bit surprised about knowing that name.

"I'm guessing you were brought up to speed about all that happened at Styx," Briar replies.

"Indeed, and I must admit, it's very shocking. To think that you were once the daughter of the Seerwood Royal Family of Hollow Fae, homed to the Salubrious Fae also known as Blot Healers," Crowley says.

"Yeah. The others told me that you suspected me to be one, but with the rest of them having passed on from the disease, it's hard to be certain," Briar says.

"Yes. However, after what I've been told by the Shroud and Styx Soldiers, I have to conclude to the fact that you are indeed the Salubrious Fae, especially the magic you've display of healing those who have overbloted throughout the school year," Crowley explains, and is still overwhelmed, "To think, the female who have arrived to the school was actually an endangered fae, and is the sole survivor of the Seerwood royal family."

Grim turns to Briar and whispers, "Hey Briar, I think the headmage is speechless to hear that you were a princess."

"Maybe, I'm overwhelmed by it myself," Briar says.

"Of course it is. In fact, rumors are starting to spread. I'm not sure how, but word about your true identity is starting to get leaked and everyone wants to know how you have survived the disease that practically wiped the Salubrious Faes out. And the rumors that the only antidote was placed within you is true. They kept asking me so many questions and I couldn't answer all of then. I was only able to explain that when you first arrived, you were a human with sealed magic," Crowley explains, "Of course, now seeing it, little by little, you are able to release your magic, and even possibly something else..."

This catches everyone's attention.

"What do you mean?" Sereia asks.

"Well, think of everything Briar has done to heal all those with gone overblot. Briar has displayed powerful magic and it comes deep within your heart. It's still a theory, but I believe it's possible that Briar has awoken her signature spell since that first encounter with the monster," Crowley explains.

This ends up as a surprise to everyone, especially Briar.

"My signature spell? How can I...?" Briar asks.

"It's simple, the Salubrious Faes are known for having signature spells that are related to their Blot healing species," Crowley says.

And then continues, "However, since those faes are still difficult to learn and understand, they are uncertain of the kind of magic they have. Along with many rumors about the faes. One of them involves them having more than one signature spell. One that relates to their blot healing abilities, and another that represents them. Like I said, it's a possibility."

"So, the magic I've been using might be my signature spell?" Briar asks, surprised.

"It's possible," Deuce says.

Ace grins, "That means you've been using your signature spell to cure everyone and didn't even know it."

"That's amazing," Jasper says.

"I guess so, but I'm not even sure it's name, I just used it," Briar says.

"I'm sure you'll know in good time, including anything else about your uh, past," Crowley says, "For now. I must be off. We will discuss more on a later date. Now, if you'll excuse me."

And soon takes his leave.

Grim questions, "What was THAT about? The headmage sure is a real weirdo."

"It's okay Grim, I'm sure Crowley is just worried after after what we've been through," Briar says.

"Maybe," Grim replies.

But then Ortho says, "Okay, everything's good to go!"

Seeing the screen, Vil says, "Well, well. I see you included all the retro games we played on the Island of Woe."

"Eheheh," Ortho chuckles, "I thought it'd be nice to play 'em together again."

"You know, at the time, we were the ones playing. You two didn't even pick up a controller," Vil says

"Well, yeah. We've already cleared everything in those games on hard mode, even the secret stages and hidden bosses," Idia says.

This piques Vil's interest, "Hmm. In that case, might you provide us with a gameplay demonstration today?"

"Good idea. It's faster to watch someone else than play through a tutorial," Ace agrees.

And Grim says, "I wanna see this Star Rogue game. It looks the coolest outta all of 'em."

"In that case, how about we get Idia to do a no-death run on Meteor Mode? It's even harder than hard mode," Ortho says.

"Really? I dunno, it wouldn't be very useful for them..." Idia says.

But Ortho says, "But a regular playthrough wouldn't be very entertaining either. You should give them the kind of demonstration only you can provide! Let's get this started!"

Soon, Idia smirks in response. And with that, India picks up the remote and soon begins to play the game.
