Chapter 78: Helping a Friend
Rook, Epel, and Sereia, cry out, shocked, "Vil!"
"Vil, are you okay?" Briar asks, worried.
"Oh, relax. I just slipped. I lost a ton of muscle in my legs so my boots are loose," Vil says.
"You've exhausted your stamina and magic so much that it has altered your appearance. You need to rest and see a medical mage ASAP," Azul says.
"...You're no better off, Azul," Riddle says.
Azul notices Riddle is awake, "Ah, Riddle. Finally awake, I see."
"Yeah... Still lightheaded, though," Riddle says, "I can't believe I embarrassed myself like that in front of you all... How mortifying."
"What matters is that you're okay," Tanzanite says.
Just then, Vil asks, "Actually, is Grim awake yet?"
Briar gasps and looks down to see Grim is lying on her lap.
She gently shakes his shoulders, "Grim, are you okay?! Wake up, Grim! Wake up!"
However, Briar realizes something is wrong, "He... He's not breathing!"
"Grim was in the Underworld far longer than any of us. I'm not surprised he's been hit harder," Vil says.
"Hm..." Rook responds, "May I examine him, please?"
"Um okay," Briar says, and passes Grim to Rook.
Rook takes Grim and touches his pulse, "He isn't breathing, but he does have a pulse." He then notices something as he lies on the ground, "Hm? What's this? There's something stuck in his throat!"
"Something's in his throat?" Jasper asks.
Rook then turns to Briar, "Briar! Turn Grim on his stomach and make sure his head's lower than his chest."
"Alright," Briar says, and does just that.
Then Rook says, "Now give him a good smack on the back! Put some oomph into it. Keep going until he breathes!"
Briar then begins to do just that with as much of her strength.
"And call his name as loud as you can!" Rook adds.
Briar does that and calls out, "GRIM! WAKE UP! GRIM GRIM!" and continues smacking Grim's back.
"Grim, can you hear us!" Tanzanite calls out.
"Please, wake up!" Sereia calls out.
"Say something, Grim!" Jasper calls out.
Trinket even rings and pulls on Grim's ear, trying to wake him up.
Suddenly, Grim begins coughing and hacking.
Then cries out, "WAH!" As he spits something out of his mouth.
"He coughed something up!" Epel says, shocked.
Soon, Grim continues coughing and hacking.
"Excellent work, Briar!" Rook says.
Then turns to Grim, "Grim, take deep breaths!"
Grim coughs and soon regain consciousness, "Uuurgh..."
Jasper shouts, "Alright!"
"It worked!" Tanzanite happily says.
Even Epel happily says, "Yes! He woke up!"
Even Trinket and Sereia are relieved.
Briar happily says, "Thank goodness. Are you okay, Grim?"
"I...I think so..." Grim asks, still a bit dazed and out of it.
He then asks, "Briar... wha-what happened to your hair...? your eyes...? Your hair is all gray, and your eyes are yellow, and one looks hazy..."
"Um yeah, it's a bit of a long story," Briar says.
"Briar... Briar..." Grim says as tears begin to fall from his face, "I'm one lousy boss..."
"It's okay, Grim. All that matters is you're okay," Briar reassures.
But still in tears, Grim says, "I'm sorry for scratchin' you.... I'm sorry, Briar..." and shed tears.
"It's okay, Grim. I know you never meant for it to happen," Briar says.
Then Grim asks, "Can I go back to school again...? And to Ramshackle?"
Briar happily nods in reply.
"Of course you can. You, Sereia, and Briar are a package deal," Epel says. "I'm sure Ace and Deuce are waiting for you too."
"That's right. It wouldn't be the same without you," Jasper says.
"Yeah. And we were very worried about you," Sereia says.
"You had all of us scared," Tanzanite says.
And soon, Grim begins to cry, "M... M... MYAAAAH!" And hugs Briar in tears.
Briar then comforts Grim, "It's okay Grim. Everything is going to be okay."
Just then, Vil says, "Unbelievable. He ate something off the ground even in dire peril, and then CHOKED on it? What an incorrigibly voracious monster."
"I'm sure Grim will be fine. Now we just have to find a way to get Vil back to normal..." Rook says.
Then Idia says, "Our systems are in shambles. We're not gonna be able to treat any of you here. Sage's Island has world-class medical facilities. And they should have all your medical records, so...let's just get you all back to school."
Suddenly, the Styx Staff member says, "We've restored communication with the outside. We'll prep a technomantic aircraft for takeoff."
"And, uh...the River Lethe?" Idia asks, through the intercom.
Then another Styx member says, "We still don't have a full picture of everything from our crash reports, but... Ortho deleted the River Lethe's configuration program. He apparently set some Charons to termination mode and destroyed it completely-both the hardware and software.
"He did what...?" Idia asks, shocked.
"At present, we can't give you an ETA on how long it will take to restore it," The female staff says.
"The River Lethe's program has been continually improved and modified since the Age of the Gods," Idia says, "I can't imagine how long it would take to fix... if it can be at all. My priority right now is getting Vil and the others medical treatment. I'll have to leave the rest for Mom and Dad to sort out."
Soon, the first staff says, "We've found an aircraft that's ready to go in dock one. Night Raven College students, prepare to board. We'll be sending there via Chariot."
Soon, a large chariot arrives.
Then Vil says, "Okay, well... Uh, all aboard... if you please."
Vil sighs with a smile, "Finally, we're going home."
"Yes. We shall all return to school together," Rook says.
"I can't wait!" Epel says.
Leona then says to Jamil, "You better not be stuffin' us into another sardine can on a sub-economy flight."
"I don't care if I have to ride in a cargo plane. I just want to get back to my dorm and fall into bed," Jamil says.
"Fully agreed," Azul says, "All that effort and exhaustion, and I don't have a single thaumark to show for it. What a nightmare this was."
"Well, the nightmare's over now," Riddle says.
Then turns to the others, "Come on, everyone. Hop in the Chariot."
"Okay, Riddle," Sereia says.
"Finally, we're going to head back to school," Tanzanite says.
"Yeah. I'm exhausted," Jasper says.
Trinket feels the same
Then Briar turns to Grim, "Come on, Grim. Let's go home."
"Mrah!" Grim cheers, "Ramshackle's boss is comin' home!"
Just then, Vil says to Idia, "Well, Idia... I'll see you at school."
"...Huh?" Idia responds, confused.
But soon realizes, "Oh, uh... I guess your memories are all still intact..."
"Huh? What about our memories?" Leona questions.
Idia yelps, "Erk. Uh, nothing. Nothing at all." He then says, "Anyway, I guess I've joined the ranks of the SSR Epic Troublemakers now. People all over the world are probably gonna hold me accountable as the mastermind of this whole incident... And I'm ready to face that... So... I doubt I'll be coming back to school."
