Chapter 67: An Even Deeper Trek Tower 1 Part 18
Soon, the group arrives in the containment facility where more Phantoms are being held.
"Let's see what Ortho has in store for us this time," Rook says.
Suddenly, they hear someone speak out, "Oh, I hear people! Are you some kind of special forces? Have you come to rescue me?!"
That causes the group to get startled and brings out their magepens for an attack.
"Who's there?!" Vil demands.
Suddenly, they hear the voice, "Eek! Hold your fire! I'm just a researcher! A very unarmed researcher!" What's going on at HQ? Is the Cerberus System back online?"
When the group arrives, they find a Styx researcher tied up and blindfolded.
"My goodness!" Rook says, shocked, "He's been tied up and blindfolded! Here, allow us to release you."
Rook kneels down and unties the researcher and removes the blindfolds. Soon, the researcher is free.
He then notices Vil, Briar and the others, "Wait... You're two of the subjects from Night Raven College. And you three of the group that attacked the island."
"That's right. I'm Subject E a.k.a. Vil Schoenheit," Vil says. Then turns to Briar, "And this is Subject H a.k.a. Briar Hawthorne." Then turns to the others, "And this is Rook, whose name will go down in Island of Woe history as the instigator of a most singular event."
"What are you doing here?" The researcher asks.
"To make a rather long story short, we're heading to the Underworld to get this situation under control," Vil answers. "And what are you doing here?"
"When the emergency alarm went off, I started making my way to an escape terminal with the rest of my team..." The Styx member says. "But then the Charons captured me! They brought me here before I could make sense of what was happening, and took my ID card. They said they put the card in one of these cages, then just took off.
"I see," Rook says, "So this is what Ortho meant when he said he'd leave an NPC guide for us."
"He put a helpless person in danger just for that? That ain't right!" Epel says, upset.
"That's horrible," Briar adds.
The Styx member says, "The cages have been thawing, and I could hear the Phantoms waking up. I thought I was a goner for sure!"
"I wouldn't relax just yet," Vil says, "If we don't find the ID card fast, the Phantoms will surround us, and then it'll be game over for us all."
Then Epel asks, "Do you know which cage the card is in, sir?"
"I'm afraid not. I was blindfolded the whole time," the Styx member says, "But heard a Phantom's voice for a brief moment when the Charons opened the cage. I think it's some kind of beast, or perhaps a crustacean?"
The group turns to the cages and sees which one of the cages that the researcher thinks has the ID Card.
"That narrows it down considerably. It's likely in one of the cages with a number in the 800s," The styx staff says.
"All right. You stay hidden until we find the ID card," Vil says.
"Okay, I will," the Styx member says, and decides to hide.
Rook says, "We've fought a variety of Phantoms on our way here, but... I didn't realize they had different classifications, like beast and crustacean. Absolutely fascinating."
Epel groans, "Ugh. Could you please wipe that eager look off your face?"
"Remember, Rook, curiosity killed the cat. Now let's focus and find that ID card," Vil says.
"And quickly," Briar says.
