Chapter 66: Downward Trek Tower 2 Part 4
The three boys exit the elevator and begin to walk down the emergency stairs. They also can feel the cold weather in the area as they walk down the stairs.
"All this moving around, and I'm still getting chilly... This place is rather cold, isn't it?" Jamil says.
"Yeah. It's really cold here. Even I can tell," Jasper says.
"Tartarus is basically a giant freezer meant to keep Phantoms on ice," Leona says, "If they started building this place during the Age of Gods, it'd make sense to put it underwater where they could maintain low temps."
"It's not exactly the best environment for someone from the Sunset Savanna or the Scalding Sands," Jamil says.
"No kidding," Leona says, "At least our dorm uniforms are imbued with temperature-regulating magic, but it's definitely not pleasant."
"Oh, do you need a jacket? You could take mine. I could make some magical adjustments to it..." Jamil asks.
"Nobody asked for that, sheesh," Leona says, annoyed, "We'd be even worse off if you got so cold you couldn't move. We just need to focus on dragging Radish Sprout out of this hole and gettin' off the island."
"Right. I'm worried about the school too," Jamil says.
"... You are?" Leona questions.
"Of course," Jamil says, "The only housewardens there right now are Malleus and Kalim. The whole school must be in chaos, to say nothing of Scarabia."
"Hmm... So you don't trust your housewarden to run the dorm by himself?" Leona questions.
"That's not what I meant," Jamil says, "Aren't you worried about your students, Leona? Savanaclaw has no vice housewarden. I imagine your students are in a panic with their leader gone.
"What do I care? They can groom their own tails," Leona questions, annoyed.
"Are you serious? Talk about irresponsible..." Jamil says. But suddenly feels something, "Wait."
"What is it, Jamil?" Leona asks.
"There's a breeze. Before, all I could feel was the cold updraft beneath us," Jamil says.
"Yeah, there's been a crosswind for a little while now," Leona says.
Then Jamil notices something ahead, "Look! There's a narrow side path just a bit further down."
Leona looks ahead, "It's too dark to see in there. The perfect place to hide out. There's a good chance some unfrozen Phantoms are lurking there."
"You're right. They could attack us if we're not careful," Jasper says. Then he brings out his magepen, "I plan to fight them if they try to get close."
But Jamil says, "You stay back here. I'll go in alone and check it out."
"Huh? What are you on about?" Leona questions.
"What? You're the second prince of the Sunset Savanna and a housewarden. It only makes sense that I should take point. Besides, I'm much quicker on my feet- oh, not that I'm suggesting you're slow, of course," Jamil says.
Leona remains silent at the statement.
Then Jamil says, "I'm worried, okay? I wouldn't be able to bear the responsibility if anything happened to you..."
"Hah!" Leona laughs, "Worried? Responsibility?" and soon frowns, "You're talking about ME?"
Suddenly, he notices something, " ...Hold on."
Suddenly, they hear a screeching sound.
"Too late. Something's coming," Leona says, and brings out his magepen.
Still holding his own pen, Jasper says, "It must be one of those Phantoms."
Then Jamil sees Phantoms coming up the stairs and towards them, "And there they are. We'll just have to intercept them!"
