Chapter 13: Sands Getting Hotter
Later in the night, Briar and the others are still trapped in the vacant room of the Scarabia Dorm. Since they are unable to leave, they at least decide to get some sleep.
Soon enough, Briar begins to have another one of her dreams. Briar soon finds herself in some large room.
"Where... where am I now?" Briar wonders.
She looks around to notice some throne on one side of the room.
"Am I in some kind of palace? Talk about a fancy palace it is... it kind of reminds me of the Scarabia Drom, at least the structure of it," Briar says to herself.
Suddenly, Briar notices Jafar in the palace along with a short man wearing Arabian like attire. From the way he dresses and sits on the throne, Briar suspects that he must be the sultan, the rulers.
"Huh? What is he doing there?" Briar wonders.
The sultan says, "But I thought the law says that only a prince can marry a princess. I'm quite sure..."
But Jafar says, "Desperate times call for desperate measures, my lord."
He holds out his cobra like staff and its eyes begin to glow.
Jafar commands, "The princess will marry me."
Dazed from looking at the eyes, the sultan says, "The princess will marry..."
But it is cut off to hear what is like music.
The Sultan snaps out of his daze and asks, "What? What is that? That's music!"
Curious to the sound, Briar soon walks outside from the palace, and soon notices a young woman with long black hair looking down to hear the noise as well. Briar soon looks down to see what looks like a parade. The parade has different animal acrobats, and there is a large elephant with a prince on it.
The one leading the parade calls out, "Step aside for Prince Ali! Here he comes, for all to see! The shining jewel of this marvelous procession... Ali Ababwa himself, the living legend!"
Confused, Briar says to herself, "Alright then. First a sultan and a grand vizier? And now a parade through the desert?"
The next day, Briar wakes up from her sleep. She rubs her eyes and is still unsure about the strange dream she has, and it also seems the dream is happening out of the Ramshackle Dorm. Well, she knows it since what happened during the exams incident.
She soon hears Grim talk in his sleep, "Mrah... I don't want any more of your moldy crackers... Myah..."
Suddenly, Briar hears the sound of the door being unlocked and it slams open.
The student calls out, "How long are you all going to sleep? On your feet, now!"
Everyone else wakes up in surprise.
Grim yelps, "Mrow?! What now?!"
"I'm awake!" Tanzanite yelps.
Jasper looks at the smartphone and sees the time, "It's 6 a.m."
Sereia yawns and asks, "Did Kalim send us a wake up call?"
"In a way! We're marching ten kilometers to the eastern oasis!" The Scarabia Student says.
"You expect us to trudge that far through sand that's hard to walk on as it is? Why should we?" Grim complains.
"Because the housewarden said so. Now stop whining and come on!" The Scarabia student says and grabs Grim
Grim begins to whine and complain, "Myaaah! I don't wanna! Get your paws off'a me!"
"But none of us have our P.E clothes," Sereia says.
"Nor wearing the appropriate clothes for walking through the desert," Briar adds.
Just then, the student holds out a bag of clothes, "Jamil, have me bring these spare P.E clothes for you."
"Um thanks," Briar says and takes the bag.
"Make sure to get dressed and then follow me to the front of the dorm," The student says.
"Alright, but no boys in the room for us girls," Briar says.
Sometime later, after getting dressed, they meet the students in front of the dorm where they're going to do their 10 k march. Everyone , despite not really wishing to, are ready to take their march. And for some reason, Kalim is riding on an elephant.
"Uh, why does Kalim have an elephant at the dorm?" Tanzanite questions.
"I'm not sure if that's something we should questions about," Jasper replies.
"Are we really going to have to walk that long across the desert?" Sereia asks.
"I don't think we have much choice.
Suddenly, they hear Kalim shout, "Now march to the eastern oasis! This will help strengthen your legs. If I see anyone break formation, they'll be punished later!"
Grim groans, "How'd I get dragged into this?"
"Less talking, more marching! Move out!" Kalim calls out.
Briar says, "Come on, let's just get this over with."
"Fine fine," Grim says and grumbles bitterly under breath.
And soon enough, the march across the desert to the eastern oasis has begun. Everyone marches in a specific formation as they fall to the rhythm. Some are even holding umbrellas. Briar and the others do their best to follow along, but with some with short legs, it's not easy. And during the time, Kalim is riding on the elephant, though Briar and the others still question about that.
Time has passed and Kalim notices Grim and calls out, "You there! You're breaking formation."
Grim heavily breaths, "Let me catch my breath, at least."
Kalim shouts, "Enough whining! March! If you're tired, that's proof you need to train more! It's your own fault!"
Jamil remains silent in reply.
Briar also remains silent but for a different reason. She feels that this marching training seems a bit familiar.
Time has passed and many of the students are starting to grow tired.
Kalim notices and shouts, "You're slowing down! Pick up the pace!"
W-we can't go any faster!" A Scarabia Student says.
"It's because of you fools that we placed last in the tournament and exams!" Kalim scolds them.
Exhausted, Grim says, "I'm burnin' up here. Water...I need water! I'm gonna shrivel up!
"We're almost to the oasis. Hang in there," Jamil says.
"We'll do the best we can, but Kalim is not making this any easy for us," Jasper says.
"Jamil said that we're almost there, so we should try to keep moving forward," Briar says.
Sereia nods her head in reply.
And with that, everyone continues forward to reach the eastern oasis.
