Chapter 4-4: Fortune-Telling
Sometime later, Trey is able to find the tomato juice.
"All right, managed to find some tomato juice," Trey says. Then turns to the others, "Everyone good on souvenirs?"
"I got mine," Sereia says.
"I got mine as well," Briar says.
"Us too!" Tanzanite and Jasper say.
Briar turns to Grim, "Are you getting him anything, Grim?"
"The thing you got counts for both of us!" Grim says.
Jasper rolls his eyes, "It figures!"
"Lilia's gonna love all our presents!" Kalim happily says.
I can see the look of delight on his face now. I'd like you all to come to Diasomnia once we're back. We can tell Lilia about our trip," Malleus says.
"That's a great idea," Briar says.
"Yeah, sure! No problem!" Grim says.
"Looks like we're set here. Hmm, where to next..." Jamil says.
Suddenly, Cater catches a whiff of something, "Ooh, is that coffee I smell?"
Coffee and tea are really popular here, and there are tons of cafes in town. Scalding Sands spiced coffee is known for its distinctive flavor profile. Some of the cafes even do coffee divination," Jamil says.
"What's that?" Grim asks.
"It's a fortune-telling method that was invented here. Najma's really into it. Our spiced coffee is brewed without using a filter. So the cup still has the grounds in it, and people tell fortunes based on its shapes and patterns, and the amount of water droplets," Jamil says.
"I dunno how that would work, but is it fun?" Grim says.
"I'm not really the best judge of that. Would you like to give it a go, Grim? Najma asks me to do it sometimes, so I know how to tell a basic fortune," Jamil says.
"You should totally do it, Grimmy! I love that kinda stuff," Cater says.
"Cater's big on astrology. He's actually right a lot of the time, so I've had him tell my fortune before," Trey says.
"I'd like to see this as well. I've never heard of such a method," Malleus says.
"I would like to see it as well," Tanzanite adds.
Grim eagerly says, "Go on, read my fate, Jamil!"
"All right. Let's head into that sidewalk cafe over there," Jamil says.
Sometime later, after getting some coffee, everyone is sitting at a table.
"Okay, Grim. Drink this coffee, but try not to swallow any of the grounds," Jamil says.
"Down the hatch!" Grim says and drinks the coffee, "Hoo boy, that's bitter! And my tongue's all tingly. You sure this is coffee?"
"It's a light roast with strong notes of cardamom. People usually have something sweet with it. The sugar helps it go down easier. Here, try one of these," Jamil says, and places some sugar in the coffee.
Grim drinks some more, "You ain't lyin'! It's way better now!" and more.
"Once you've finished, put the lid on the cup and turn it upside down. Then hold the bottom of the cup while asking your question," Jamil says.
"Okay! I wanna know when I'm gonna be a great mage!" Grim says.
"Not if, but when, huh," Trey says.
"That's how Grimmy rolls," Cater says.
Once Grim is done, he passes Jamil the cup.
He looks in the cup, "Okay, your fortune says..."
Grim nervously gulps in response.
Jamil answers, "...Nothing. There's nothing to tell."
This upsets Grim, "Mrah! Whaddaya mean by that?!"
"I explicitly told you not to drink the grounds, but you did it anyway! How could you chug something so bitter?" Jamil says.
"How was I supposed to drink the coffee if I had to keep worryin' about the grounds?!" Grim questions.
"Hey, but that's poetic, right? It means your fortune's impossible to tell, Grimmy!" Cater says.
Everyone begins laughing.
Grim grumbles and crosses his arms.
