Chapter 3-7: Tower Baguettes
Still exploring the bazaar, everyone looks to see the many different foods around.
Najma points out, "Ahh, that melon was great! So what should I make you buy me next?"
"Good grief, you're STILL in the mood for food?" Jamil asks with a sigh.
"I'm seeing a lot of bread stalls. There's nothing like the smell of fresh-baked bread to whet the appetite," Trey says.
"Bread's a staple here!" Najma says.
"Even smaller roadside bakeries have wood-fired ovens so they can serve it fresh. Bread's best that way," Jamil says.
"They've got loaves in all shapes and sizes! Round, square, narrow, puffy, hard and crunchy..." Cater says, looking at the bread. Then notices other items, "And there are just as many toppings, too. How am I supposed to choose?"
Malleus also notices, "That stand there is selling baguettes that are taller than many of the children here."
Briar notices it, "Hey, Mal's right."
"Geez, you're not kidding!" Cater says, surprised.
"They're called tower baguettes. They're a famous Fireworks Fest treat," Najma says.
And Jamil explains, "People here say that if you eat a big baguette, you'll never have to go hungry again. In that legend I mentioned, the young man shared his bread with hungry children. So the saying comes from that. Now baguettes are considered another food for good luck, and lots of vendors sell them on festival days."
"I ain't never seen a hunk o' bread that big! Now that's what I call Grim-sized! Lemme get some of that!" Grim says, and with that, Grim begins to take a bite of the bread.
Everyone is shocked.
"Grim!" Briar and Sereia cry out.
Najma yelps, "Ack! He just took one and went for it..."
Grim continues eating as he says, " ...S'good!" and continues eating the bread.
"Grim stops eating, you're going to make yourself sick," Tanzanite says.
Moments later...
Grim groans as he lies on his back with a full stomach, "Urgh... I keep eatin' it, but there's always more... This might be too much of a good thing..."
"I thought that would happen," Najma says, "It's not meant for one person. You're supposed to tear off bits and share it with a group."
Grim then passes the remaining bread to Briar, "Briar, finish the rest for me, wouldja?"
"I'm not sure I could even put a dent in that," Briar says, taking the bread.
"Well, if we all eat it, I'm sure we can finish it," Jasper says.
"I guess we'll have to pitch in and help finish it too," Trey says.
"But won't we get tired of it like Grimmy if we just eat it plain?" Cater questions.
But Jamil says, "The stall has some jam if you want something to put on it. Our local fruits are made into all sorts of things. Our apricot jam is especially famous. It's very good. I highly recommend it. Here, try some."
Jamil then gathers some apricot jam and spreads it on the break that's been cut into slices.
"Don't mind if I do..." Trey says, and takes a bite of the bread with the jam, "Mm, it does have a nice sweetness. I also like that it has big apricot chunks. Gives it an extra fruitiness."
Soon, everyone begins eating the bread with the jam.
"It's retained the tartness of the fruit, but it's much sweeter," Malleus says.
"Is it REALLY sweet?" Cater asks.
"Yes. It pairs nicely with the bread," Malleus says.
"I agree. The apricot jam tastes really good," Briar says.
"It's delicious," Sereia says.
Even Trinket agrees very happily.
"We use this jam at home a lot. I have a major sweet tooth, so I LOVE putting it on bread," Najma says, and presents a piece of bread with jam to Cater, "Here, Cater, have some!"
But Cater says, "Oh! Uh... It looks great and all, but Cay-Cay's gonna go with door number two instead..." And notices something else on the table, "What's this here?"
"Ah, that's baba ghanoush. It's a roasted eggplant dip," Jamil answers, "Our fresh vegetables are another local specialty. That's a great pick."
"Then I'll give it a try..." Cater says and does just that, "Ooh, it's so nice and light! There's also yogurt mixed in, yeah?"
"Lemme get some o' that..." Grim says and takes a bite, "Oh that's GOOD! I could eat this all day!"
"I thought you said you couldn't eat another bite. Absolutely shameless..." Jamil says.
"His stomach is like a bottomless pit," Jasper says.
"I have to agree with you on that," Jamil says.
"I'm gonna have some too!" Najma happily says.
"Make sure you wash your hands first, Najma. Here's a wet wipe," Jamil says and presents the wipe.
Najma gets annoyed, "Ugh, come on! I'm not a little kid!"
"You really look out for your sister, huh, Jamil?" Trey says.
"It's a little overbearing, if you ask me," Cater replies.
"This bread IS quite good," Malleus says and turns to Jamil, "Does your household have a wood-fired oven, Viper?"
"No, we have a regular one. Whenever I need a wood-fired oven, I just go to Kalim's house. When I was a little kid, one of the things I enjoyed most was baking fresh loaves in all kinds of different shapes and sizes," Jamil answers.
"Oh yeah! The first time I tried to bake one, it came out all burnt," Najma says.
"I can't really blame you. Wood-fired ovens are tricky to bake with," Jamil says.
"Yeah, I've been there. I remember burning a pie in one of those when I was a kid. I'm sure it was disappointing," Trey says.
"It totally was! I almost cried. But Jamil took the burnt loaf and used it to make hamburger steak," Najma says.
This confuses Grim, "Wait, how'd you do THAT?"
"I cut off the most charred bits and used the rest to make breadcrumbs," Jamil answers.
"It was really good!" Najma says.
"That's really good idea," Briar says.
"I wasn't about to let food go to waste. Najma got discouraged after that, so I had to be the one to bake all the bread for our family," Jamil says.
"Yup! And he still loves making it!" Najma says.
"Aw, you're such a sweet brother!" Cater says.
"...That's not the lesson here," Jamil says.
"I think the lesson is that 'when life gives you lemons, make lemonade," Briar says.
"What does that mean?" Grim asks.
"It means when something happens that is difficult or makes you discouraged at first, use it to make it a positive thing. Najma may have been discouraged by burning the bread, but Jamil is able to use them to make something good like turning the bread into breadcrumbs for hamburger steaks," Briar says.
"Talking about that makes me want some lemonade and some hamburger steaks," Grim says.
"Oh Grim," Briar replies, rolling her eyes.
