Chapter 3-6: Just How We Are
"Are there any other fruits we should try, Jamil?" Trey asks.
"There's always silky melon, which is Silk City's signature fruit," Jamil answers, "It has a sophisticated sweetness and silky texture. You won't find it in many other countries. Actually, it might be the perfect snack for you all."
"How's that?" Grim asks.
"Do you remember the kind hearted young man from the tale I mentioned before?" Jamil asks.
"Yes. We remember," Briar says.
"Well, according to the legend, he didn't have much money, but he still split a melon with his friend," Jamil answers.
"If he's so poor, how's he eatin' fancy melons? I'd eat fruit every day if I could, but we can't afford 'em on our lousy budget!" Grim asks.
"Who knows? It's a story. Don't think too hard about it," Jamil answers.
"Mrrr," Grim grumbles and begins to think.
Then Jamil explains, "Over time, people started saying that if you shared one of these melons with someone, your friendship or romance would last forever. So at some point, the melons became a staple of this festival, as a symbol of good fortune."
Then Grim realizes, "Ahh, I getcha. But why's it the perfect snack for us?"
"Simple—if things run smoothly in the group, it makes less work for me. That goes double for you, Grim," Jamil says, and firmly says to Grim.
Soon, Cater says, "So they're tasty AND got a buzzworthy story attached? That's the viral content I'm here for! I've gotta try one!"
"I definitely don't want to miss out on a culinary experience I can only get here," Trey says.
"Yeah, what they said! I wanna sink my teeth into one of those puppies!" Grim says.
Then Jamil says, "There's a fruit stand up ahead that's only open on festival days. You'll want to go there. They cut the melons in half, then serve them with a scoop of their homemade melon ice cream."
"Oh, the ice cream sounds quite nice. I think I'll have some as well," Malleus says.
"I had a feeling that would pique your interest since you're such a fan of frozen treats," Malleus says. Then turns to Briar, "What about you, Briar?"
"I would like some as well," Briar says, and blushes a bit.
"All right. You won't be disappointed," Jamil says, "I'll get enough for the whole group. The stand's right over there."
Shortly after, Briar and the others are now having some frozen treats.
Trey says, "Hey, this IS good. I've never had a melon with such a rich flavor before."
"The ice cream is also exquisite. The melon really comes through," Malleus says.
"And the presentation is just adorbs!" Cater says.
"It's really good," Tanzanite says.
"Sure is," Jasper says.
"Of course it's good. It's a Silk City specialty!" Najma says.
Then Cater has an idea, Ooh, guys! We should take a group pic with our food!"
"But why? Did we not just take a photo at the Asim estate?" Malleus questions.
"But this silky melon's supposed to make friendships last forever, yeah? So we gotta take a pic with it!" Cater says and takes pictures, "We could tag it, I dunno... #SilkyMelon #SymbolOfFriendship #MelonBudz. What'cha think?"
"I think it's a fun idea," Briar says.
"...I'd rather not," Malleus says.
"I'll have to pass," Jamil says.
"I'm not big on that kinda thing either," Trey says.
"I gotta finish this ice cream before it melts!" Grim says and licks and slurps his ice cream.
"I would like to do it," Sereia says.
Trinket agrees.
"No thanks," Jasper and Tanzanite say.
"Oof, shot down by everyone but the girls! Now I'm full of melon-choly," Cater says.
"I don't get it. Why not just take the picture?" Najma says, confused.
Then whispers"to her brother, "Did you guys have a fight or something, Jamil?"
"Not at all. That's just how we are," Jamil whispers.
"Night Raven College must be one weird school..." Najma whispers.
"Guess the melon friendship hasn't kicked in yet," Cater says.
"That's okay. There's plenty of opportunities for pictures," Briar says.
Najma also whispers to his brother, "Not as odd as how your school managed to have a girl enrolled there, and one who is a lost princess and an endangered species of faes."
Jamil sighs and whispers, "I have to agree with you on that one. I'm surprised the headmage let her attend despite it being a boys school.
