Envy sat alone on the cliff, staring out at the dawn sky.

"Cinnabar!" a voice called. The she-wolf didn't turn. Even when a paw smacked her shoulder, she gave no reaction. There was a growl from the wolf behind her. "Envy."

Finally, she flicked her tail to show she'd heard. "What is it, Mother?" She spat the last word out, venom in her voice.

"We have hunted," the russet she-wolf growled. "Come back to the den and eat." Her turquoise eyes stared pointedly at Envy's ribs showing through her fur. "Can't have you starving to death."

Envy's eyes widened in mock surprise. "Since when did you care?"

"I'm your mother, of course I care!" Russet snapped, though something told Envy a different story. Maybe it was the coldness in her mother's voice. Maybe it was her stare that said I wish you were never born. Whatever it was, Envy sensed it. She didn't belong there. She never did.

For years, she had endured the pain of her mother's rejection. But slowly, slowly, it had eaten away at her heart, creating a void that no one could fill, no matter how hard they tried. She had taken refuge from her mother's wrath in that emptiness, hiding herself away from the world. Eventually, she died. Not physically--she still breathed and her heart still beat, but inside, there was nothing. A hollow shell, a dried up stream, that's all she was.

Or so she thought.

For the first time in a long time, she felt something. Something apart from anger and jealousy. Sadness. The wall that she had so carefully built, the dam that she had so carefully crafted, had broken, giving way to the flood of emotions that she had bottled away so deep that even she could not find it. Pain, grief, sorrow, yearning, regret, it all came rushing in. A waterfall, sending her crashing into the rocks far below. She kept her face expressionless, but she was sure her mother could see it in her eyes. An avalanche of emotions, tumbling down on her, crushing her.

"I'm not going back," she forced herself to say through the hurricane swirling in her. "In fact, I'm never going back." She willed her voice not to waver, not to crack, not to show even a hint of weakness. In that moment when her wall shattered, she had made up her mind. "You wanted a family without me, right?" she asked, even though she knew the answer.

Russet's turquoise eyes narrowed.

"Now's probably not the time for a sappy speech, but I gotta say this. I don't know why, but I have to." Her turquoise-gray eyes locked on her mother's. "I don't know if you know, but every night, I look at you before I fall asleep, waiting for that moment when you would look over at me. I wanted to see the warmth in your eyes again. How long has it been, Mother? How long has it been since you've shown me love? It's been a while, hasn't it?" She took a step back. "You know, the message you've been giving me has finally gotten through. I'm gonna give you the family you want. One without me." One more step, and she was at the edge. "Last thing. My name is Envy. Cinnabar doesn't exist. Not any more."

With that, she stepped off the cliff. Everything was silent, except for the soft thump of her body on a ledge far below. But she wasn't dead. Not yet. Her spine broken, blood seeping out from her open jaws, she closed her eyes as her last breaths left her lungs. How ironic. The sun rose, spreading its rays across the mountains, while her sun had set, bringing with it eternal darkness.
