_____________
Choi Y/N glared across the table at her friend, Anaya. Something was off; she wasn't perky and bright, which wasn't what this evening had called for. It was supposed to be a fun dinner and shopping date, yet Anaya appeared to be on the verge of tears.
"Are you okay?" Y/N asked, raising an eyebrow and concerned.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Anaya replied and looked away, stabbing her fork into the salad on her plate. She wasn't as chatty as usual.
"Did you and Jungkook have a fight?"
"Why would we have a fight?" Anaya snapped, her tone sharp.
Y/N held up her hands in surrender. "I'm sorry. I was only asking." She went back to eating her lunch. This was supposed to be fun, and it was anything but.
She checked her watch, wondering when she could leave. Anaya grabbed Y/N's drink from her hand and passed it over to her. Y/N looked at her friend.
"Have it," Anaya said, her voice softer.
Y/N nodded, taking the time to chew her salad, and was about to reach for the glass when a hand suddenly swept across the table, knocking the glass over. The juice spilled, and Y/N gasped, looking up to find the owner of the hand—Kim Taehyung, Jeon Jungkook's best friend. Oh, did they forget to mention this was his restaurant?
Taehyung smiled apologetically. "I'm so sorry. I just came to greet you girls," he said, forcing a smile.
"No, it's fine. I mean, yeah," Y/N stammered, looking at Anaya, who looked visibly frustrated.
"Taehyung."
"Sorry, shall I get another drink for you both?" he offered.
"No, thanks. We are leaving anyway," Anaya replied curtly.
"My treat, then. You guys don't have to pay for the food," Taehyung said.
Later, as they walked out, Anaya finally spoke. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have snapped at you. Jungkook and I didn't fight. We are good. Actually, I think he's going to propose to me very soon." Anaya flicked her hair off her face and smiled.
"Isn't that wonderful?"
"Yeah, that does sound amazing. Isn't that a little too soon?" Y/N asked, nodding as they walked together. Jungkook was Anaya's boyfriend, and he was really handsome, like a businessman or something. They had been together for only a year, probably a little more.
"Yes, I can hardly believe it myself. I was in shock. I didn't even think that he loved me, but then I saw the ring."
Y/N noticed the whites in Anaya's knuckles—she was gripping her phone tightly.
"You're brilliant together."
"Aren't we just?" Anaya smiled. "I'm bored. Shall we go back home?"
"Sure."
Y/N followed her friend, feeling uneasy about Anaya's distant behavior. "Let me drive," Anaya said once they reached the car. Inside the car, Anaya took out her phone and tapped away at the keys. Y/N buckled her seat belt and waited.
Anaya gave a satisfied smile and pocketed her phone. "Teach him a lesson."
"What's going on?" Y/N asked.
"Nothing," Anaya replied with a voice that was dead, her face expressionless.
No sooner had they reached the open road than the wind began whisking in through the open windows, while the pitch of the car's engine grew in higher and more vicious degrees with every second. Y/N felt their stomach twist in apprehension as Anaya's grasp seemed to tighten on the wheel further.
"Anaya, slow down," Y/N pleaded her voice barely level. The speed was getting too much, the curves of the road sharper than they had appeared.
But Anaya made no reply. Instead, a strange, unsettling smile crawled its way onto her lips, her eyes fixed ahead on the road as though she pursued something only she could see.
"Anaya, please!" Y/N's voice was rising with panic, but Anaya only pressed harder on the gas, and now the car was just a blur of motion.
Then, without any warning, Anaya jerked the steering wheel sharply to the right, and the car veered off the road, hurtling toward the thick line of trees. Y/N's scream was caught in her throat as she saw the huge trunk rushing toward them.
The world spun violently, metal screeching as the car crashed into the tree. There was a deafening crash as the impact slammed Y/N against her seat. The very last thing that Y/N saw before everything went dark was Anaya's eerie smile, captured in place as if she had known exactly what was coming.

Your feedback about your best friend? Mine is, "I don't know who my best friend is now. Growing up makes me understand that the best friend thing isn't real, it's nothing but a phase" (My opinion; not offensive).
