Chapter 18
When Sebastian departed, Ciel was left alone to fend for himself. Although he had wanted to come to Sanguinem himself, he knew it was dangerous. He wasn't afraid; he trusted Sebastian to come to his rescue if he was in a dire situation.
Typically, Ciel would never put himself in a situation like this where his life was in danger, however, there was only one reason that made him take this line of action; confirmation. He had to witness the vampires fall himself. Ciel began walking around, trying to get an idea of what kind of place Sanguinem was. He had heard Sebastian's report but some things needed to be personally witnessed.
When a hand roughly grabbed Ciel by the back of the neck he let out a gasp and reflexively clawed at the hand to let him go. "Wandering about livestock?"
"Put me down!" Ciel protested, his feet dangling in the air. The vampire who held him paid no attention to his words and began walking, keeping his grip on Ciel's neck tight.
"I found this one wandering around," The vampire stated, tossing Ciel to the floor.
Ciel scrambled to stand and met the eyes of other children who were all gathered together. The vampire who brought him turned and left and Ciel's eyes flickered to a vampire with a clipboard who was checking each child.
"Who're you? I haven't seen you before," One of them questioned, looking Ciel up and down.
"I don't go out much," Ciel responded.
The boy frowned and stepped closer to him, making Ciel slightly uncomfortable.
"Next," The vampire called out and the boy observing Ciel pulled away and went next.
All eyes were still on him as if the children could sense he was different. The staring continued and it wasn't until a little girl stepped close and pointed at Ciel's eye did he understand why.
"Why do you have an eye patch? Is your eye gone?"
He blinked and then his hand went up to the eye patch, "Y-yes, it's gone."
Those words seemed to satisfy the girl while everyone else continued to stare, albeit not as intensely.
As each child stepped to the vampire it was obvious they were being identified and cleared before being let loose to a different area. Ciel understood that it was the direct result of Sebastian's attack and tried to think of a way to get past. Since he was not a captured child, there was no record of him and the vampires would no doubt question why there was an unregistered child among them.
More and more children were checked and passed through until only a small group of seven was left. Ciel fidgeted. There had to be something he could do to remain under suspicion. The smaller the group became the more he struggled to come up with something reasonable.
Soon there was only two left and Ciel decided that whatever happened would happen and he would use it as an opportunity. When Ciel stepped up and the vampire looked over the list of children he frowned before his red eyes gazed down at him, "You--"
Before the vampire could continue, a voice interrupted him with, "You there, that one's mine."
The vampire turned and said nothing, before giving Ciel one last look then departing.
Ciel could only stare at the man that approached with a mixture of horror and utter fury.
"What's with that expression? It's not cute at all."
Long silver hair and an amused expression eyed him. Ciel faintly recognized that face; it was the face of one of the many occultists who held him captive that day.
Ciel balled his hands into fists as the vampire chuckled and reached for him. Ciel wanted to fight back, he wanted nothing more than to wipe the grin from the vampires face and destroy him for what he did, but he did nothing.
Ciel flinched when the vampire put his hand on his head and ruffled his hair before the hand trailed down to his neck, then his shoulder.
"My name is Ferid Bathory. Don't worry about a thing, I'll take good care of you little Phantomhive."
