Chapter 13

When Ciel received the map and estimate of the vampire base he placed it down after sparing it a glance. "How many of those vampires would you say pose a threat to you?"

"The majority of them are easily disposable however the Progenitors might pose as formidable opponents should they fight. It goes without saying that I can handle something of that caliber with ease, however, with you present they might choose to play dirty," Sebastian responded.

"So these Progenitors are the stronger vampires huh? How many of those are there?"

"Each position is filled with the same number of vampires per rank. There is one first progenitor, two second progenitors, three for the third and so on. There are a total of twenty ranks within their society."

Ciel sighed and went deep into thought before asking, "When you went to the vampire base, what was it like?"

A small smile crept to Sebastian's lips as he said, "Humans are livestock. Like what you've heard they serve as food to the vampires. Most of them are young and presumably, don't live to an old age. Most seem to die around twelve or thirteen. The humans also seem to live in small makeshift groups to fend against the other children who fight them for survival."

"Even as food, Humanity hasn't changed," Ciel muttered. "They only care about themselves...Sebastian! Prepare for an assault. We're going to take the vampires by surprise."

Sebastian bowed, "And what do you plan to do?"

"If we want to weaken the vampires, attack their source of food."

"Are you suggesting I kill the children?"

When Sebastian glanced up at Ciel, his eyes gleamed at the determined expression on Ciel's face.

"That's exactly what I'm suggesting. Don't kill all of them but rather, as many as you can. I want you to cause an uproar. And while the vampires are preoccupied with their dying livestock, that'll give us an opportunity to weaken them significantly."

Sebastian chuckled and said, "Yes, my Lord."

When Sebastian departed, Ciel released a low sigh and sat down in his chair. He clenched his fists into small balls as he contemplated the current course of action. Squeezing his eye shut he took a deep breath before opening it again.  "Humans are naturally selfish so...I'll be selfish too. The world may have gone but that doesn't matter. Sacrifices have to be made..." He said to himself.

Leaning forward, Ciel placed his head on the desk and closed his eye, this time to force himself into slumber. Not wanting to dream of pleasantries, he forced himself to replay the events of that day over in his head. The smiles of the humans as they pointed at him from the outside of the cage; their cruel laughter as they proclaimed immortality; and the sad smile of the boy beside him who held his hand tightly, blue eyes staring into his own.

Ciel left himself in the memory, instilling the pain and suffering back into himself to remind him of his ultimate goal. When his eye fluttered open it was hard and cold.

He stood up, and turned his gaze to the photo still lying on his desk; the one with his father and that boy Mika.
