Chapter 12

Elizabeth sat on her bed and laid down her swords, exhaustion overtaking her. Without warning, her demon appeared before her wearing a smile.

"Go away," She whispered, closing her eyes. It was too much for her to take in, the form of Ciel staring at her with large curious eyes and the smile she loved so much.

Her demon ignored her request and said, "Lizzy, you're exhausted. I worry for you."

"You're a demon," She said, "A demon who keeps tormenting me. Stop acting like you care about me."

"...But I do care about you. You're the lovely Wife of the Earl of Phantomhive," he said.

Elizabeth sat upright and stared hard at the demon. His large blue eyes were sad, staring at the ground as he shuffled his feet. As she gazed at him, She couldn't help thinking of him as Ciel; Her Ciel. Her mouth itched to say sorry or to comfort him in some way but she forced herself to keep it shut.

When he looked up at her he smiled, although the sadness in his eyes were evident.

A short knock on her door snapped Elizabeth back to reality and she stood up and approached the door. When she opened the door she was greeted by the smile of Yoichi.

"Elizabeth, are you going to come and eat with us?" Yoichi asked.

Elizabeth opened her mouth to say something when she felt a small hand  on her shoulder.

"Lizzy, remember when mother used to come and watch us play house? You would always serve her the best cookies and they were always delicious."

"Yes, I'm coming," Elizabeth responded, trying to block out her demons words.

Elizabeth stepped out into the hall and followed after Yoichi.

"Ne, Lizzy, do you still love me?"

Elizabeth paused and slowly turned. The demon was staring up at her as if he was seriously intent on getting an answer.

"I'll always love Ciel," She muttered.

The demon's eyes lit up and he smiled with the faint outline of a blush on his cheeks. "I knew it, you do still love me."

"Hey what're you mumbling about?"

Elizabeth glanced behind to meet the usual gaze of Yuichiro. He and the other squad members stood gathered in the hall.

"We weren't sure if you would come eat with us so we decided to come and get you," Shinoa commented.

Unbeknownst to them, Elizabeth shifted uncomfortably, her eyes flickering to the demon who was now at her side giving Yuichiro a glare.

"I don't like him," the demon huffed, crossing his arms. "That guy...hmph! Ne Lizzy, you haven't forgotten our promise right?"

Elizabeth was perplexed at the attitude of her demon. The way he resembled Ciel's naturally fickle personality and the short attention span he displayed. He truly resembled her dear Ciel. And that was why she shook her head and smiled, saying loudly, "I'm actually pretty hungry. Lets go and eat something before my stomach makes more noise."

She purposefully ignored the demon and began walking with the squad.

The demon blinked and frowned, Ciel's face contorting into one of disdain. For a moment he stood there, wordlessly staring down the hall at the squad members talking with Elizabeth. Then, he vanished.

When Elizabeth sat down and finally placed a fork full of food into her mouth, She wondered why it was that she managed to gain such an unusual demon. Chewing, She let her mind wander while everyone else talked and joked among each other.

The promise...it happened years prior when Elizabeth was only six years old. She and Ciel had sat together playing with toys when he suddenly said, "Lizzy, We'll always be together right?"

"Uh huh! I'll be the perfect wife for you! It's a promise!"

The blush on young Ciel's cheeks warmed her heart.

Ciel smiled so bright in that moment and leaned in to kiss her forehead. "Then I'll be the perfect husband for you too!"

Staring at him smiling so bright and feeling his warm palm giving her slender hand a pat caused a pang in her chest.

It wasn't until a hand was shaking her furiously did she blink and become aware of her surroundings.

Feeling the warm liquid sliding down her cheeks, Elizabeth quickly wiped away her tears and glanced into the concerned eyes of Mitsuba.

"Are you okay?" Mitsuba asked.

All eyes were on Elizabeth and she could only glance down at her food, its contents no longer appealing.

"Yes, I'm fine,"

"Well...in any case, after this meal we have to rendezvous with Guren, we have another mission," Shinoa stated.

"I'll go and meet you all there."

Elizabeth stood up and departed.

"Ah, wait!"

Elizabeth ignored the call and left. She went back to her room to gather her swords before departing to the rendezvous site, burying her sadness.
