Chapter 12
Violet's POV
"That was honestly way too close. It's a good thing you're good at acting." Ray said.
"Well it's a good thing you're a good liar!" I replied smiling. "You totally saved my butt back there... You know, with the squad and stuff."
Ray looked at me and smiled back. "Yeah, and if I didn't, the government would have both our heads by now."
"Hahah, yeah. Guess so." We both turned back to face forwards as we walked back to my mom's place. Ray had already texted his parents saying that he'd be out for a while, and by the sounds of it, I guess they were okay with it. The only real worry I have is telling my mom about it, and what kind of reaction she would have when I did.
I kept it away from her all this time. Bringing it up now was something that kind of scared me. With my mom, you could really expect any type of reaction from her: Mad, sad, happy... Could be anything. We just had to find out for ourselves.
Ray and I kept quiet for most of the way there. When we got to the end of my street, Ray piped up.
"You sure you're gonna be okay?"
I looked at him confusedly. "Hm? Oh... Yeah... I sure hope so. I mean, what's she gonna do, throw me on the street and disown me for having super powers?" I smirked. Knowing her, that's one of the things that I know she wouldn't do.
Ray chuckled a bit. "Let's hope not."
We both looked up at the sky. The sun was starting to set a little bit, but not a whole lot. We figured if we got out of my place soon enough, it would still be bright enough to get downtown.
"Well," I said, looking at my house worryingly, "Here we are."
"Moment of truth." Ray patted me on the back. I smiled. I guess I kinda need all the support I can get right now.
With a deep breath, I opened my front door.
"Hello...?" I heard my mom call from the living room.
"Hey," I replied, taking off my shoes. "Ray's here for a little while. Is that okay?"
"Sure...! Course." My mom said. I heard her get off of the couch, which meant she was going to come over to see us.
My mom gave me a hug, then smiled at Ray. "Good to see you again!"
Ray nodded and smiled. "Same to you."
My mom looked at me again, but this time, noticing the hint of my worriedness. "Hunny? You okay?" She looked at me with concern.
Crap. Here goes nothing.
"Let me explain." I said as I ushered everybody into the living room. Ray and I looked at each other one last time. Moment of truth.
"So, where's Dad and Caleb?" I asked as my mom sat down on the couch. I decided to stand just so that it would make it easier for the both of us. Ray stood with me too, but a couple of feet away.
"Oh, they're out doing their... 'Boy's Club' stuff. They'll be back in a while." my mom said, waving it off. "No need to worry about them, though. I made sure Dad's got his phone, and told him to call me if anything went wrong."
"Phew, that's at least good to hear..." I nodded.
"So... What is this you wanted to tell me about? Why are you so worried?" My mom shuffled in her seat.
Ah gosh... Here we go.
"It's best if I show you instead." I said. My mom looked at me suspiciously, not really sure of what to say.
I looked at Ray as I put my school bag down beside me. He nodded briefly at me, as if letting me know that everything was going to be okay.
I faced my mom again, and...
*POOF*
My two gorgeous angel wings sprouted from my back.
My mom looked at me in disbelief. She put her hand out and beckoned me to come closer, so I did... Nervously. My mom turned me around so she could get a better look at them. She took the tip of my left wing into her palm and felt it.
"T-T-This has got to be some sort of joke..." Her voice trailed off. Ray and I both looked at her with a growing concern on our faces.
I turned my head so I could look at my mom. "N-Nope. It's real..."
"But... How-"
"That's exactly what I thought too, mom."
She dropped her hand down to her side and rested it on the couch. "You didn't tell me this why?"
Ah great. Here we go.
"Because I was afraid that you'd get mad." I replied back.
She looked at me, confused. "Why would I get mad at you... For something as big and important... as this...?"
I turned to face her head on. "I don't know. Maybe I was afraid that you would be scared of me and kick me out of my own home."
My mother looked at me, then stood up so that we were at eye level. Of course, she was a lot taller than me, so I had to look up at her. But, you know what I mean.
"Oh, hun bun, of course not!" Then she pulled me into her famous great big mamma bear hug. My wings went back into my body, my skin healing over them like usual.
Then something strange happened.
I started to sniffle. Tears streamed down my face and landed on my mother's long grey and black sweater. I clenched the back of my mother's sweater tightly, not wanting her to let go.
I felt lost. Even though I have two people I can talk to about all of this, I still feel alone. I'm the only one out of like a million people who have powers. I don't have anyone I can relate to on an extreme personal level.
My mom let go of me after a couple of seconds to make sure if I was okay. I nodded and wiped my eyes with the sleeves of my shirt.
My mom looked over to Ray and motioned to him. "And how does he know?"
I didn't have to respond, because Ray responded himself.
"Because I was there when it happened."
