Time Apart
Still half asleep, y/n reached out towards her end table. Her fingers lightly ran along the wooden tabletop until they lightly bumped into her phone. With tired eyes, she unlocked the phone and stared at the screen. Found something, call me.
Y/n sat at the edge of the bed and stretched. She looked over her shoulder and saw Tomura still fast asleep. Quietly, y/n tiptoed out of the room and sat down by the door out in the hallway. She rubbed her eyes as the phone rang.
"Hey, g' mornin', sorry for messaging so late," Giran said immediately.
Y/n cleared her throat. "No, it's fine," she let out a yawn; "so what did you find?"
"Kano found ya a few people. He asked if one of us could pick up his list, though he specifically mentioned that he thinks it's best if ya come and get it." Y/n didn't reply for a moment. She remembered her promise to The League. Y/n was supposed to be stalling as long as possible. Giran's voice caught her attention. "I can come along, I have a few business associates I should visit. If ya wanna convince Kurogiri, then we should be able to get there and come back in no time."
"Actually," y/n began; "If you don't mind, can we take the scenic route?"
"Oh? Yeah, I guess that's fine too. I can't be out there longer than a day, but we can do that if ya want. We can even go shoppin' if you'd like, how's that?" Giran paused, y/n guessed he was taking a cigarette break. "Mind if I ask why, though?"
"Can I talk about it later?" y/n replied. She didn't feel comfortable talking about The League's secret meeting, not with Tomura on the other side of the door.
"Sure," he answered; "get here when ya can. Don't take too long, alright?"
"Right," y/n said. She got up onto her feet and opened the bedroom door. Just as quietly as when she left, y/n walked around the room and collected a change in clothes. Y/n grabbed a bag and shoved as much as she could fit in it.
Before stepping out of the room, y/n crept up to Tomura and kissed him on the cheek. Tomura grumbled. Y/n smiled at the blue-haired villain as she watched him. She gave him yet another kiss, unable to resist not seeing him struggle again.
Y/n lightly tapped on Kurogiri's door, which was a much more delicate task than she liked. With the two rooms so close together, knocking felt like a balancing act. It had to be loud enough to wake up Kurogiri yet quiet enough to not disturb Tomura.
Kurogiri's door opened just a bit. The villain stretched his head out to come face to face with y/n. She explained that she wanted to go to Giran's office and that she had planned on being gone for a few days. A portal manifested behind y/n. Before leaving, she said her goodbyes to the shadow-like villain.
Giran's office seemed to be getting worse and worse by the day. Each time y/n visits, it seemed like it was even more cluttered than her last visit. This time around, y/n struggled to get the door to open. A filing cabinet was haphazardly placed in front of the door. Giran had to push it out of the way so y/n could enter.
Y/n's eyes scanned the office and observed the chaotic state it was in. "Are you sure you don't need help? I have plenty of free time, you know."
Giran waved off y/n's offer. "Nah, it's fine. I'm still deciding what needs to come with me and what should be destroyed anyway. I don't wanna bug ya with that. Too boring 'n' all."
"If you say so," y/n muttered under her breath as she tried her best to avoid knocking things over. Unable to make it to the chairs, y/n sat down on a large stack of files.
Giran lit up a cigarette. Y/n kept an eye on his lighter. She was already uncomfortable watching him smoke before, it was much more nervewracking now with the mess.
"So spill the gossip. Why are we taking the long way?" Giran asked, sparing no time to get into the details.
"The League wants me to stretch finding someone as long as possible. They're hoping T-" she stopped and cleared her throat; "Shigaraki, would either change his mind or get bored."
Giran exhaled slowly and hummed as he leaned back into his leather chair. "Not much of a plan," he replied.
"It's all they got," y/n responded.
"So ya plan to take the train? That's all ya got?" He asked before inhaling into his cigarette.
Y/n watched as the ash fell to his desk before answering. "I think I'm going to spend a few days away from The League and everything. I'd ask if you want to take a vacation and spend time with me, but I'm sure you're far too busy."
"Far too busy," he repeated in a more affirming tone. "This is why I decided not to start a family. I'm married to my job."
Giran snuffed out his cigarette and tossed it in his ashtray. "Either way, I think some time away from Shigaraki would do ya some good. He's not a good influence. Is that little crush still a thing? I really hope not."
"Shall we get going?" y/n asked abruptly, trying her best to ignore his question; "we can't have you falling behind schedule."
Y/n stood up immediately and began to push the filing cabinet further away from the door. Behind her, y/n heard Giran sigh. "Still do I see. Sweetie, we need to find ya somethin' better. I'm sure some of my associates have a few sons that would kill to have someone like ya."
"Yeah, I'm sure he'd kill them first," y/n silently uttered under her breath.
"What was that?" Giran asked.
"N-nothing," y/n stuttered. Giran paused for a moment as her quirk activated. The older villain shrugged it off and held the door open for her. Y/n felt her face heat up from embarrassment as she walked past the door frame.
Giran purchased everything from the moment he called the taxi. Y/n had been sure to take enough money with her, and she tried to tell Giran that she didn't need to pay for her. However, Giran was having none of it.
Y/n sat down on the train next to Giran. The older villain pulled out a newspaper he had bought on the walk to the train and began to read. Y/n remembered that she also brought something to read. She sighed as she dug through the bag.
Y/n grabbed something to read before she started packing clothes, so she knew her book was at the bottom of her bag. "Fuck! I said shut it!" a harsh voice yelled from the other side of the train. Y/n flinched, her bag nearly slipping from her fingers.
She glanced over to the source of the voice. A highschool boy with ashy blonde hair and sharp eyes was glaring at another boy wearing another similar uniform with red hair. The red-haired boy bowed his head and publicly apologized to everyone on the train for the outburst.
"UA kids," Giran mumbled, catching y/n's attention. She turned around and looked at Giran, who was still staring at the boys with a sharp glare. He looked down at y/n and turned back to his newspaper. Feeling a bit anxious being on the same train as hero hopefuls, y/n pulled out her book and began to read to keep her mind off of it.
Throughout the train ride, y/n listened in on the boys. She was sure Giran was doing the same. Y/n was eavesdropping out of curiosity; Giran was doing it because it was his job.
"They're the loud sort, aren't they?" Giran muttered quietly, in a light-hearted tone, still intently staring at the newspaper in his hand. The red-haired boy wasn't very loud, it was mostly the other one, and y/n was sure Giran was explicitly talking about that one. Y/n hummed in response. She tried to keep her eyes on the book, but in her peripherals, she held a close watch on the pair of students.
The train slowed to a stop. Y/n's grip tightened on her book as the pair walked by and exited the train. She figured the boys wouldn't recognize her; however, she wasn't wholly sure Giran would go unnoticed. Y/n peeked over to Giran. He had a calm expression on his face, entirely unphased by the boys as they walked by.
As soon as the boys stepped off the train, Giran set down his newspaper and sighed. "Nothing good," he mumbled in a disappointed tone. He looked down at y/n. "The big organizations would have paid a pretty penny for some info on UA."
"Ah, that's too bad," y/n replied quietly. Y/n's voice was low, she didn't want anyone hearing in on her and Giran's conversation.
The two stayed on the train for a while longer. The UA boys got off several stops before y/n and Giran's. She placed the book on her lap and looked out the window, watching the scene outside the train fly by. Y/n felt her phone vibrate. "When are you coming home again?"
"Kurogiri, eh?" Giran said from over her shoulder. Y/n looked over and saw the older villain's eyes on her phone.
Y/n left Kurogiri's message on read, fearing that Giran might accidentally stumble on how close she and Tomura actually are. She could already hear Giran's disappointed dad voice just thinking about it. Strangely enough, Giran didn't have any kids; however, he had the look and tone practically mastered as if he did.
"Ah, yeah. I didn't tell Shigaraki I was leaving so he's probably telling Kurogiri to ask." She put the phone in her pocket. Y/n knew she was making up excuses at this point, she hoped that Giran wouldn't dig into it. Out of everyone she has ever used her quirk on, y/n felt most guilty the two times she's used it on Giran.
The train once again slowed to a stop. Giran stood up. "This is ours, let's go." Y/n got up and followed the older villain off the train.
Giran walked y/n to a public park. He glanced at his phone. "Okay, so Kano and ya are gonna meet while I go out on my business venture. I'll catch up with ya in a bit." Y/n sat down at a bench and nodded with a smile. The older villain returned y/n's smile as he lit up a cigarette. "When I get back, we can go shopping or somethin'."
Y/n watched Giran walk away into the distance. Now with the older villain gone, y/n pulled out her phone and returned to Kurogiri's text. "Just a few days. Three, maybe four. Possibly a week. I guess it depends, I'm not sure how long I'm supposed to be stalling."
Much to y/n's surprise, Kurogiri didn't respond. She saw that he read it. Y/n guessed that Tomura was still sleeping and he was gathering information. She wished that she invited Tomura, but y/n knew she couldn't for many reasons. Y/n didn't want to wake him up, she was supposed to be stalling and taking her time, y/n also figured Tomura wouldn't actually want to come anyway.
Tsuji and y/n were meeting in a city that ran along a beach. The streets were swarming with tourists. She knew Tomura would argue that it was too crowded.
A man sat down on the bench next to y/n. She recognized the brown coat immediately. "Good afternoon, miss." Tsuji shot y/n a wide smile. Y/n moved away, giving her and the undercover villain more space between them.
"Hey," she mumbled nervously. Y/n's eyes noticed a small stack of papers stapled together in his hand. She figured that was the information Tsuji dug up for her.
Tsuji took no time and got straight to business. He handed the papers to y/n. As the undercover villain talked, y/n scrutinized each sheet.
"I managed to find three people. I was trying to find more, but I thought this was a time-sensitive mission. Giran only paid me to find names, I take it you'll pick up the rest from here?" Y/n didn't trust Tsuji enough to give him any more details about Tartarus. She kept her mouth shut about how the mission wasn't as time-sensitive as he thought.
"Yes. Thank you," y/n said quietly, placing the papers on her lap. She expected Tsuji to get up and walk away, but he stayed seated on the bench. Y/n felt awkward as she decided if she should sit still or get up and leave.
"Can I offer you some advice?" Tsuji asked suddenly.
Y/n tilted her head, she wondered if he'll suggest against going to Tartarus as if she didn't already know that. "Uhm... sure," she replied.
"How does your quirk work when you're talking to someone with a lie detection quirk?" Tsuji asked. Y/n thought about it before giving him an unsure look. "Don't know, eh? I was just doing some research on my off time. Looking into who is in charge of investigating The League." The villain shot y/n a smile. "I'd watch what you say if I were you and think about your next move a little more carefully."
Tsuji's smile faded, and his expression changed became less light-hearted. "Look at the time. I have to leave now if I want to make my train back to the office." He stood up and tipped his hat. "Call me if you need any more help. Giran knows where to find me."
Y/n looked down at the papers in her hand. Suddenly, she felt like she had other things to worry about. Her mind jumped from one thing to the next. What if I can't stall out long enough? How long is it going to take? What happens if Tomura doesn't change his mind? Will The League continue, or will they abandon everything?
"Y/n? Y/n." y/n looked up and saw Giran hovering over her. "A little lost in thought there?"
It took y/n a moment to remember where she was at the moment. "Sorry," she began; "how long have you been standing there?"
"A few minutes," he answered. Giran's frown deepened. "Are you sure you're okay? You're lookin' a little pale."
Y/n didn't want to lie to Giran again. She didn't answer. Instead, she took a deep breath and calmed her racing heart. Y/n slowly began to feel normal again. "Yeah, I'm alright," y/n finally replied.
"Well, I promised a shopping trip. Ready to go?" Giran asked, pulling out another cigarette and lighting it.
"You can't smoke in the stores," y/n said with a stern look on her face.
"How about this, I'll smoke in the stores, and ya can convince anyone who says otherwise it's okay." The look on y/n's face remained, unchanging. "Alright, alright, ya win. I'll either leave it outside or finish it before we get to a shop."
Y/n got up off the bench, gripping onto the papers in her hand tightly. "Let's go then. I see a perfectly good beach, and I'm gonna be here for a few days. I might as well pick out a swimsuit, right?"
"How's this one?" y/n asked as she held up a f/c two-piece up to Giran's face.
Giran looked at the swimsuit in her hand. "Fine, I guess?" he replied. Y/n held up her other hand, which was holding another swimsuit. "Any of them would look good on ya, just pick one."
Y/n looked at the swimsuit in her left hand and then the one in her right. Y/n hummed indecisively as her eyes darted back and forth between the two. "This one, I suppose," she said as she kept the f/c two-piece in her hand and put away the other one.
Y/n spent the next few hours dragging the older villain practically door to door. She got herself a few more outfits and then purchased Giran a few things in return.
Giran was challenging to shop for. His interests mainly fell onto his work, y/n knew she couldn't possibly buy him anything work-related at a gift shop. If she couldn't decide on a present based on interests, y/n would try to base her gifts on aesthetics instead. As far as the older villain goes, his aesthetics were all over the place.
He definitely gave off sleazy conman vibes, and he acted like money was the only thing important in his life. Still, some of the things he owned were uncharacteristicly cutesy.
Y/n recalled Giran's real phone, which was reserved for his most valued customers, had a cute phone case. The other ten phones he kept as a back-up were plain. She decided his phone case was too old and y/n picked out another phone case that was equally as adorable for the villain.
Y/n held the phone case up to Giran. "Surprise!" Giran gave her a smile as he held the phone case and looked it over. He thanked y/n. She smiled back at him.
"So your method of stalling is to just not go home?" Giran asked as he placed a smoothie in front of y/n.
She took the cup in her hand and looked at it. "It's all I got," she admitted. Y/n slid the papers across the little table to Giran. "These three are my next targets. I'll poke around see what I can find."
"I suggest picking one," Giran replied; "don't engage all three. It'll just add more connections to you if one of them disappears."
Y/n listened to Giran's advice carefully and nodded. "Right, thank you." Y/n changed the subject. She was tired of thinking about Tartarus. This was as close to a vacation as she's gotten in a while. Y/n wanted to keep her mind off everything for as long as she could.
Y/n and Giran talked about Giran's work instead. She tried poking into his personal life, but not surprisingly, he didn't have much to say. Y/n was interested in his move. Partially because she hated how cluttered his office had become and partly because she wanted to know where he was going.
As of now, he was undecided. Y/n didn't like the sounds of that. Giran being uncertain about the location of the new office could mean anything. For all she knew, he could be relocating to a bigger room in the same building or abandoning the country for another. After y/n mentioned it, the older villain swore up and down that he wasn't planning on leaving Japan with a chuckle.
"Its been fun 'n' all, but I should be headed out," Giran said. He stood up and picked up the bags from y/n's shopping trip. "Let's find you a good hotel so I can go home."
Y/n tried to buy her hotel room, but Giran was having none of it. Unbeknownst to Giran, y/n was keeping track of everything he's bought during this trip, she had no idea how, but y/n wholly intended yo pay him back.
"I'm just going to drop everything here," Giran said, placing the bags down on the bed. Y/n looked around the pristine hotel room.
The room was far more exquisite than she thought hotel rooms could ever be. The bed was huge, big enough to fit four people comfortably. Up above, y/n noticed the ceiling was a gigantic mirror. Y/n thought about how often she zones out while staring at the ceiling. She wasn't sure how she felt about being stared back.
"Alright sweetheart, I'm gonna head out. I'll talk to, ya" he paused, Giran looked like he was thinking for a moment; "eventually, I guess."
"Soon," y/n corrected; "I'll see you soon."
"Sounds like a deal, see ya around kiddo." The older villain grinned at y/n, and she waved goodbye.
Y/n was now alone. She pulled out her phone and looked through it as she sat on the bed. She's been gone for half a day so far, she was certain Tomura would be awake by now. Y/n noticed she didn't have any messages from Tomura. She couldn't help but wonder if he was mad at her.
Placing the phone down on the bed, y/n walked over to the large window and pulled the curtains back. Y/n looked down below. She didn't realize her room was so close to the top floors until now.
Y/n sat down on the floor and watched the skyline out in the distance as the cars below drove by. The once bright blue sky soon became orange and then finally darkened to a near black. Reflecting off the city's lights, y/n could see a hint of dark clouds floating up ahead. She tried to look to the sky for any stars, but the city was far too bright.
Y/n sighed as she spun around and sat with her back pressed against the window. She never knew how lonely she could feel until just now. "I kinda miss all the arguing and stuff," y/n muttered to herself.
