Stalling for Time
Y/n could hear Tomura and Kurogiri talking in the other room. She listened to their muddled voices as she got dressed. Y/n soon gave up trying to figure out what the two men were saying and cracked the bedroom door open. She made sure it was just enough to listen in on their conversation.
Just as y/n thought, Kurogiri was making up reasons to take her away. The shadow-like villain was vague. Y/n knew he was trying not to mention the rest of The League or their secret meeting today. By the sounds of it, Tomura was being stubborn about allowing y/n go with Kurogiri on a miscellaneous task.
For the most part, Tomura wasn't controlling when it came to where y/n went. Impressively, he had held true when he said y/n would be allowed to go anywhere after her probation was over. She was allowed to leave Tomura's base as often as any other League member. Y/n liked to believe that she was even more welcome to come back.
She chose to stay with Tomura. Unlike everyone else, y/n didn't think she had what it took to be alone. Having nobody was scary. Staying with Tomura and Kurogiri was always the easier option.
It was clear from the very beginning that Tomura was the jealous type. Y/n always found herself impressed with Tomura whenever she told him that she needed to visit Giran for one reason or another. She guessed that Tomura knew he would overstep some boundaries with y/n if he ever tried to keep here away from Giran.
Even so, y/n knew it wasn't jealousy that was keeping Tomura from allowing Kurogiri to take her. Tomura hesitated to trust Kurogiri or Dabi because she's come back hurt more often than not after attending or following their directions. She knew he was trying to be protective more than anything.
Y/n sat on the floor with her back pressed against the wall, with a book in her hands. She listened to the two villains talk. It sounded like their argument was going around in one big circle.
Kurogiri promised that y/n would come back in perfect condition, and Tomura was stubbornly disagreeing. The shadow-like villain began to advise Tomura against coddling her. At the same time, Tomura brought up the times Kurogiri has suggested that y/n follow alongside Dabi.
After a while, y/n began tuning the two villains out. Y/n decided she'd prefer to get lost in her book instead of investing her time eavesdropping on their argument. Y/n was interested in hearing The League out; however, she didn't necessarily care if she went with Kurogiri or not.
The next thing y/n knew, the bedroom door beside her began to creak open. Y/n looked up from her book, and she saw Kurogiri hovering over her. "We're going," he announced.
Y/n placed the book down onto the floor at her side and stood up. "How'd you convince him to let me come along?" y/n asked.
"I didn't," Kurogiri replied. As soon as she heard his response, y/n closed the bedroom door as silently as she could.
"When he gets mad, I'm going to pretend I didn't just hear you say that," y/n mumbled in a near whisper as she stood up. Kurogiri didn't reply, reaching a silent agreement to y/n's terms. Y/n approached the ever-growing fog that was slowly consuming her room.
Wherever Kurogiri had taken y/n was unusually dark. Y/n would have found it too challenging to follow behind Kurogiri, who blended in with the surroundings well. If not for the little pockets of light, which had reflected off of Kurogiri's white shirt, she would have lost him in the darkness.
As the two walked, the area around became darker and darker. Y/n noticed it was also becoming much more humid. She could feel her skin becoming sticky from the humidity, and her clothes were uncomfortably trying to cling to her.
Kurogiri stopped in front of a metallic entrance. An unusual blue light peeked out from underneath. The sound of the handle clicking before the sound of metal scraping against metal filled the area. Y/n flinched upon hearing the high pitched shrill coming from the opening door.
On the other side of the door frame, y/n saw the remaining league members sitting on wooden boxes around a sparkling blue firepit. Himiko waved towards the door and scooted over, offering half her crate.
Y/n smiled at Himiko and squeezed onto the crate with her. If y/n had to take a guess, she would assume this is where Dabi hangs out when he isn't doing anything. Dark, bleak, and muggy seemed to fit him well.
Spinner was sitting across from the two girls. He and y/n made quick eye contact before looking away and ignoring each other.
"What took you two so long?" Dabi asked. Y/n looked towards Kurogiri, expecting him to answer for both of them.
"Tomura Shigaraki was being," he paused; "difficult."
"Well, what else is new." Y/n heard the patchwork villain say as he approached the blue campfire and sat down in front of it. Beside y/n, Himiko softly giggled. Y/n took a deep breath in, fighting the urge to argue Dabi's statement. Nobody gave Tomura enough credit. He wasn't anywhere as bad as everyone makes him out to be.
"So why haven't you two done anything?" Dabi asked. He looked towards y/n, his eyes darted over to Kurogiri. "You two live with him, you both have more opportunities than anyone else to convince him to stop."
"I have," Kurogiri began; "I've been talking to him about it every day. He's not letting the plan go."
Satisfied with Kurogiri's answer, all eyes were now on y/n. She fidgeted with the hem of her shirt. "I, uh." Y/n kept her eyes towards the ground.
"Translation: I haven't even tried," Spinner murmured. Y/n was thankful the room wasn't well lit, or else everyone could've seen just how flushed her face was. She didn't want to admit that the reptile-like villain was partially correct.
"Are you serious? Do you want to go or something?" Dabi snapped. Y/n shook her head anxiously. She knew something like this would happen if she came along with Kurogiri.
"We've done just about everything we could to discourage Shigaraki," Compress noted; "we were certain if we brought up Stain enough times, he'd end up changing his mind."
"Wait, hold on! So does that mean we aren't really getting Mr. Stainy out?" Himiko asked. She sat up straight and crossed her arms in a pout. "No fair."
Y/n vividly remembered Tomura complaining about everyone mentioning Stain. Tomura thought it was annoying; however, it wasn't discouraging him in the least. She never asked why he was so against taking Stain from Tartarus. If y/n had to guess, she would assume the scar on his shoulder had something to do with it.
The group talked amongst each other. Y/n silently listened, being more akin to a fly on the wall rather than an active participant in their conversation. Finally, The League had come to a conclusion.
At this point, it was near impossible to change Tomura's mind. He's far too stubborn for that. However, they can stall for time. Dabi convinced everyone in The League, except for y/n, that Tomura would eventually get bored of this plan if it's at a complete standstill. The patchwork villain assured everyone that Tomura would definitely move on if something more interesting shows up on the news or passed along via rumors. All they had to do was stall for as long as possible.
Dabi looked over to y/n, his eyes locked with hers. "Aren't you step number one? Shigaraki's plan can't go anywhere if you can't find someone, right?"
Y/n nodded, refusing to tell the group that Giran had already paid someone else to do the job for her. She decided that they didn't need to know that. Giran was rarely allowed to know The League's next move. She was sure everyone would be less than ecstatic to know that an unknown villain working undercover as a cop not only knew about the plan but was also paid to do the work.
"Then stop working," Dabi demanded; "can't go to Tartarus if you don't find anyone, simple as that."
"Uhm..." y/n managed to spit out. Everyone looked in y/n's direction expectantly. Y/n suddenly felt like she should have kept her mouth shut. She broke her eye contact with Dabi as she spoke. "He'd notice if I wasn't doing anything."
Dabi sighed in response. "Fine," y/n looked in his direction, she was surprised Dabi readily agreed with her point. "Just," he paused, looking as if he was thinking; "work slowly, okay? Something better will come up."
The patchwork villain who had been essentially taking the lead in this meeting glanced at Kurogiri and back to y/n. "You two live with him. Both of you have more opportunities to change his mind than the rest of us. Take advantage of it."
Y/n stayed silent. As far as she was concerned, Dabi was not in charge. "Alright," Kurogiri replied for both him and y/n. She looked over to Kurogiri and silently sighed in defeat.
Himiko gave y/n a small, yet tight, hug goodbye as soon as Kurogiri excused himself and y/n. She followed Kurogiri out of the room, y/n looked over her shoulder and saw The League watching them leave.
Y/n and Kurogiri walked in complete silence for several minutes. Y/n walked far enough away from Kurogiri that it felt like she was trailing behind him, but close enough that she could see him in the darkness. Finally, the shadow-like villain spoke up. "I'm going to leave stalling for time to you."
"Why me?" y/n asked curiously. Kurogiri was the one who agreed to Dabi's plan, she thought it would be most appropriate if he were the one to follow through with it. Especially since y/n didn't really want to go in the first place.
"Tomura Shigaraki is more likely to go along with what you say, rather than me. Besides, you've been unintentionally distracting him already, so it's not as if I'm asking you to do anything different." Y/n could hear a biting tone in Kurogiri's voice. Ignoring his tone, y/n's face reddened a bit over his word choice.
"But for how long? And what am I supposed to do?" Y/n asked.
Kurogiri paused. "Just do what you can for as long as possible. Everyone else will come up with something. I will do what I can to assist you and ease the burden."
Y/n didn't appreciate his answer. While what he said was mostly fine, the word burden stuck out to her. It made her feel like he was suggesting that dealing with Tomura was a hassle in some way. All things considered, once y/n got to know Tomura, she thought he became easier to manage as time went on.
The spikes in his mood have become easier to predict. Distracting Tomura from things he viewed as upsetting was also surprisingly simple. Small acts, like a kiss on the cheek, sometimes made him forget why he was mad. The only time when y/n thought Tomura was unmanageable was when his ire explodes, and he becomes violently angry. Y/n felt lucky that she's never been on the receiving end of that, and she intended to keep it that way.
Kurogiri opened up a portal before y/n, offering to let her walk through first. Y/n came back home to the feeling of ice around her wrist and a firm tug. She stumbled to Tomura's side. Y/n looked up at the villain's face. Tomura's eyes were sharpened, and she could see his jawline move as if he was grinding his teeth.
"I thought I said you couldn't take y/n," Tomura snapped in Kurogiri's direction. Although it seemed Tomura's ire wasn't directed towards y/n, she couldn't help but flinch. Even after all this time that she's spent with the blue-haired villain, she still thought he was terrifying when he's mad.
The exchange between the two villains was more like a parent and their child. Tomura arguing with Kurogiri while the shadow-like villain verbally defended himself in a calm composure. Y/n didn't like seeing the two of them like this.
Tomura didn't have many acquaintances as is. The League was all he had, and each member was the closest thing he had to a friend, admittedly to varying degrees. However, y/n knew Tomura would never admit to it. Because of that, y/n really hated seeing Kurogiri and Tomura argue like they have been these past few months. Y/n worried that Tomura would end up losing someone close to him.
Y/n's arm was still in Tomura's tight three-fingered grip. She tried to see if she could slip her arm from his fingers, but it was no use. Tomura's hold was too strong. If anything, the blue-haired villain might have noticed her trying and tightened his grip. However, it was just as likely that Tomura was feeling a bit more heated as he argued with Kurogiri. Causing him to y/n's arm unintentionally.
She glanced around the room as the two of them went at each other. Tomura wrecked the living room while they were gone. The floor was a mess as various piles of ashes were spread along the hardwood floor. Few things survived Tomura's quirk, those items were still destroyed. Y/n noticed the screen on the TV was bashed in, and the curtains were torn. As far as the living room was concerned, only one thing made it out of Tomura's apparent tantrum in one piece. Tomura's couch. If it weren't for the fact that she lived here, y/n would have found the scene a bit humorous.
Worried that the damage exceeded this one room, y/n didn't dare to look at the rest of the house. Even y/n wasn't sure she'd managed to keep herself level headed if she found out Tomura wrecked the bedroom while she was away.
Tomura caught y/n's attention. "Did you go along with his plan?"
Y/n looked at Tomura wide-eyed. "I...uhm..." she saw his eyes narrow at her.
"No," Kurogiri spoke up; "I told miss y/n that you had agreed to let me take her for a few hours. Miss y/n is completely innocent in this situation."
Y/n's surprised gaze shifted to Kurogiri. She threatened to play dumb when Tomura inevitably got mad; even so, she didn't think Kurogiri would hold onto his part of the deal. Y/n could feel Tomura's sharp glare in her direction. Her eyes met with Tomura, and he let go of her arm in an instant. Y/n mouthed thank you to Kurogiri as she stepped away from Tomura.
Y/n wandered into the kitchen and to the garage door. She closed the door behind her and sighed. The two villains' voices could just barely be heard from the garage door.
"I guess it's just you and me for a little bit," y/n said as she sat down on the mattress. Nobuo lifted his head up in response to her voice and then lowered onto her lap. She placed a hand on the monster's shoulder. "Though, you're not really one for conversation, huh?" The nomu vacantly stared off into space.
She wasn't sure why exactly she decided to spend her time in the garage with Nobuo when she could have gone to the bedroom. Either way, she would have been sitting in a room in near-complete silence. Y/n guessed that even a nomu could make for good company sometimes.
Her time in the garage went painfully slow. The mixture of having nothing to do and nothing to look at made time feel like it was frozen. The icy temperature in the small cement room didn't make waiting for the two villains to stop arguing any easier.
Y/n held her breath as if her breathing was making too much noise. She listened in as best she could from the corner of the garage. It sounded like Tomura had finally calmed down. Y/n decided to give the two a little more time before stepping back into the house.
She hadn't heard another voice since then. Y/n finally decided it was okay to come inside and take a look at the damage. She expected Tomura to still be upset, and for Kurogiri to be irritated more than anything.
Kurogiri was sitting down at the kitchen table. He let out an exaggerated audible sigh as soon as y/n walked through the garage door. Y/n gave him a warm smile. "Need some coffee after that?"
"More like a drink," he replied.
Y/n spun around and opened the small liquor cabinet. All the bottles inside were, for the most part, untouched. No one in the house was a heavy drinker, so the small collection of alcohol had been lasting quite a while.
Out of everyone in the house, y/n was the least likely to drink. Tomura was, shockingly, the social drinker type and would pour himself a glass on their game nights. Y/n would sometimes take a sip from his cup every once and a while. Kurogiri, on the other hand, drank much more regularly than both of them. He did so when he was stressed, like right now. Regardless, he wasn't going to be an alcoholic any time soon.
Y/n pulled out a bottle that had been opened. She knew neither her nor Tomura had opened it, so y/n assumed Kurogiri took claims to that bottle. Y/n grabbed a glass and set it and the bottle right next to the shadow-like villain. "Thank you, miss y/n."
"Well, today was kind of rough," y/n replied. Kurogiri let out a weak chuckle. "I'll let you be," y/n announced, leaving the shadow-like villain with his beloved bottle of rum.
Y/n found Tomura in the room. He was lying face down in bed. Unsure if he was taking a nap, y/n carefully closed the door behind her and crept close to the bed.
She was relieved to find that Tomura had left the bedroom untouched. Everything was right where she left it. Except for one small detail. The journal on the end table was a little too far to the left. Y/n guessed he went snooping through it while she and Kurogiri were gone. Most likely to see if y/n had left him any clues about what Kurogiri has been up to.
Y/n reached out for her phone and looked through it. Giran said he'd send her a text when any information from Tsuji. So far, it seems like he hadn't found anything yet. Y/n began to feel more at ease about moving the job to someone else. If a villain with access to private police information was having a hard time, y/n was sure she couldn't possibly find anything.
She set down her phone and looked out the window. It was completely black outside. Y/n wished she had set up some lights so she could at least see what's beyond the window. Y/n remembered feeling unsafe when she first moved into the little ranch styled house for that very reason. Having Tomura in the same bed put her mind at ease, knowing he'd promptly deal with anything that would pose as a threat.
Y/n noted that the stars looked gorgeous tonight. From that, she guessed it was probably a beautiful night. "What are you looking at?"
Tomura was still lying face down, but his head was turned in her direction. "Just the stars," y/n replied. Tomura turned to look out the window and then buried his face back into the pillow.
"Sounds boring," Tomura replied, his words slightly muffled by his pillow. Y/n gave him a small smile and ran her fingers through his hair as she continued to stargaze.
Y/n remembered something Kurogiri had mentioned earlier. Tomura Shigaraki is more likely to go along with what you say. Y/n had her doubts about that. Even so, she still wanted to try coaxing him out of the house.
I was told to distract him for a while, y/n reasoned, deciding that she was just merely following The League's orders. "I'd love to go outside tonight," y/n said.
"Then go," Tomura mumbled from his pillow.
Y/n frowned, remembering that she can't be subtle with Tomura. Sometimes he was so dense y/n had to literally spell things out for him. "Okay, sure. I'll ask Kurogiri to drop me off somewhere near the city. I'm sure it'll be safe enough for me to walk around all by myself. I'll call when it's time to pick me up."
Y/n hopped off the bed and began heading towards the bedroom door. As soon as her fingers touched the metal doorknob, she heard the bed rustle. Y/n bit her lip and stifled a smile as she listened to the dresser door open.
"I hate this," Tomura grumbled from behind y/n. She was sure he did. Tomura hated a lot of things, after all.
Y/n spun around to face Tomura with a playfully innocent smile on her face. "Thank you for changing your mind."
