A Step Forward
"Tomura," y/n lightly called out in a sweet tone. The villain had his back turned towards her. She could hear the faint tapping coming from his direction stop as soon as she said his name before continuing again. Taking a peek over his shoulder, she saw the little screen lit up in his hands. She rested her chin on the side of his head and watched him play.
She lightly ran her nails along his neck, being extra cautious not to add to his already damaged skin. Y/n's attention shifted from the game, and she instead watched Tomura chew on his bottom lip. She smiled, noticing Tomura had stopped biting at himself as soon as she moved her hand elsewhere.
Y/n fumbled with the hem of his shirt as she watched his game. Although she was looking at it, y/n wasn't paying attention to the little screen. Instead, she was more focused on the feeling of Tomura's hair tickling her cheek, and his skin under her fingertips as she played with his shirt.
Y/n found herself slipping in and out of consciousness. Tomura's hatred for going outside had its pros and cons. Y/n hated trying to drag him outside, but at the same time, she loved that she could stay by him all day without worrying that she's disrupting any of his plans. As long as she wasn't blocking his view of the little screen, Tomura was perfectly content.
A small chime from the nightstand filled the room. Y/n forced herself up and retrieved her phone. She looked at the text hovering at the bottom of the screen before disappearing. My sources got back to me.
Y/n considered putting the phone away and ignoring it. After convincing herself that she had other reasons to visit Giran, y/n dragged herself to the edge of the bed. Y/n caught a glimpse of Tomura taking a peek at her from over his shoulder. The look in his eye seemed like he was asking if she was leaving.
"It probably won't take long," y/n replied reluctantly, much preferring to stay in bed. "I need to make an order anyway." She was about to go into detail about her order, wanting Tomura's opinion; however, before y/n had a chance, she saw the villain turn back to his game.
Y/n entered her closet and turned on a light, shutting the door behind her. In the privacy of the closet, she got dressed into something else. "Do you want me to bring you home anything?" y/n asked as she exited the closet.
Tomura was silent for a moment. "No," he replied, still looking down at his game. Y/n crawled onto the bed and kissed the villain on the cheek, promising that she'll come back soon.
"Here ya go," Giran said with a smug smile. He handed y/n a small envelope. Y/n sat down and opened it. Inside, there was a single sheet of paper. She pulled it out and read it over.
"Have you read this? That's all they got?" y/n asked. She looked up from the paper and over to Giran. "It's been a week."
"He's under protective services so people like you can't find them." Giran heavily emphasized you to the point where it sounded strange coming from him. He shrugged and leaned in his chair. "Besides, something is better than nothing right? This gives ya a start, I'm sure something will come up."
Deciding that the older villain was right, y/n took the paper and folded it up. "I'll see what I can do with this." She thanked Giran as she took one of the order forms off his desk. She scribbled something down and slid the paper towards the villain.
Giran took a look at the form. "Interestin', might I ask why?"
Y/n looked down at the paper in GIran's hand. The order form was for more smoke bombs, modified to have a larger fog radius. "I feel like it might be useful." Giran warned y/n that those bombs couldn't be as compact as her normal ones. Y/n agreed to his terms and exited the office.
She reread the paper. Y/n was stuck. She wanted to look into this clue, but at the same time, she wanted to go home and cuddle Tomura some more. Y/n reluctantly walked forward, deciding that Tomura would be much happier to know that his plans were progressing.
Y/n stepped outside and leaned against the building as she reread the note yet again. The only information Giran's help found was that it seems he went to a specific bookstore every so often. It appeared that day and time were always random.
Her eyes narrowed as her grip on the paper tightened. Y/n thought about what she should do next. The most obvious thing was to scope out the bookstore and take a look around. Something was stopping y/n from acting.
She wasn't sure if there was enough information to meet Tomura's standards. However, y/n decided it might be a bad call to make a move without talking to Kurogiri at least.
Y/n followed the traffic and looked for an opportune time to step away from the crowd. Once she was alone, y/n called for Kurogiri.
She couldn't help herself from rereading the letter as she waited for Kurogiri to get her. Y/n felt awful that what to do next seemed so obvious, yet she was retreating home to ask for help. Her thoughts were disrupted by a black fog forming before her. Y/n cautiously scanned her surroundings before walking into the mist.
Y/n held up the paper to Kurogiri. Although it was nearly impossible to track his eye movements, it was clear by how long he was staring at it that he was rereading the short report. "Good find, Miss y/n."
She paused, expecting the villain to add more. Y/n was waiting for Kurogiri to keep the report a secret from Tomura or to investigate the claim as slowly as possible to stall. Nothing. He left it at a simple good job, and that was it.
"Wha- uh, that's it?" y/n asked.
"If you found a genuine lead, then I'm interested to see where it goes," he replied; "of course, I intend to halt the plan if the results don't look favorable."
Y/n and Kurogiri talked about what to do. The shadow-like villain proposed many angles to look at that went beyond y/n's plan. Admittedly, she didn't consider that the man might have a quick way to contact a hero or that he might be vigilant. Y/n also didn't think about how suspicious she'd look if she observed the bookstore over a while. "Miss y/n," he began; "your quirk would make it easy to get a job, wouldn't it?"
Y/n immediately caught on to his plan. "It probably would, yes."
"Then I suppose it would be a good idea to get one," he said. Y/n thanked Kurogiri for the advice and turned away from him. She knew what she had to do next, and y/n realized she had all the tools required to move forward.
Unsurprisingly, y/n found Tomura just as she left him. On the bed, his back towards the door while he played games. Y/n sat down at the edge of the bed and looked over to him. "Did you get what you need?"
Y/n nodded, although she knew Tomura couldn't see her. "Yeah, I did," she replied. "My smoke bombs needed an upgrade."
She paused for a moment. The room was almost entirely silent. "Hey, how would you feel if I got a job."
Tomura sat up and looked at her. "Why?" he asked in a tone that almost suggested that the thought of having an actual job disgusted him. "Don't we pay you enough?"
"Well, yes," she quietly replied. Y/n fumbled with her shirt hem anxiously. "It's for your next plan, though."
Tomura looked into y/n's eyes. She couldn't tell if he was somehow trying to decide if she was lying to him or if he was merely thinking. Tomura turned around and went back to his game. Y/n guessed he decided to let y/n do as she wished if it meant the plan would begin to move.
Y/n moved in close to the villain and lightly rubbed his neck as she had been doing earlier. The villain seemed a lot less tense as soon as her fingers touched his skin. Y/n wanted to call the book store and see what kind of lie she would have to spin to get a job. However, y/n wanted to spend the rest of the day with Tomura.
It was more for his sake than her own. Something told y/n that he wasn't going to be happy once he realizes just how much time a regular nine to five job took up.
"Hello, yes, my name is Atsuko. I'm calling about a help wanted ad I saw earlier," y/n said. She tried to sound as confident as possible.
"From our store?" the woman on the other line asked. "I don't recall any ads."
"Really? I saw it posted about ten minutes ago. You see, I really like books, so I jumped at the opportunity. I might have called a little too early." Y/n felt like she was rambling, but she didn't know what to say. At this point, she decided to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.
Y/n heard the lady on the phone lightly hum. "Ten minutes ago, you say?" Y/n confirmed that she did say that. "I think I remember hearing something about that now that you've mentioned it." Y/n bit her lip, stopping herself from accidentally cheering over her small victory.
The woman went silent for a moment. "How about you come by later today and we can talk it over?"
"That sounds great, thank you," y/n replied.
"How about this evening, around four?" she asked. Y/n told her the time was perfect, and the two hung up.
Y/n slumped into her chair and let out an audible sigh. She saw Kurogiri glance over to her from the kitchen table, and y/n smiled at the shadow-like villain. "It's been so long since I've had to make one of those calls, I nearly forgot how nerve-wracking it could be."
"You astound me sometimes, Miss y/n," Kurogiri said. The villain looked back up from his newspaper and made eye contact with y/n.
"I do?" she replied hesitantly.
"It's just amazing how fate could gift someone like you with a quirk like yours. If you were more prone to ill intentions, you could have had your own villain organization years ago." Before y/n could agree or disagree with his statement, the villain had already turned back to the newspaper in his foggy hands.
Y/n held onto her phone tightly. She then turned it on and sent Giran a small text asking for interview advice. Y/n sighed as she closed her phone.
"Stupid," a throaty voice said from behind her. Y/n nearly jumped off the couch as soon as she heard the voice. Although her heart was beating fast, y/n looked up at the blue-haired villain standing behind her.
"Wha-" y/n's voice cracked in the middle of her question. She cleared her voice and tried to calm her heart.
"That question you asked that old man was stupid." Tomura circled around the couch and sat down next to y/n. Although Tomura clarified himself, y/n didn't quite understand what he meant.
"I-I don't..." y/n's voice trailed off as she thought about it. Y/n suddenly looked up at Tomura with a frown. "What did I say about calling Giran names?"
"Back when you first joined The League, didn't I say you put all of your skill points into charisma?" Tomura asked, clearly ignoring her question.
Y/n vividly remembered Tomura saying something like that. At the time, she took it as a compliment. However, this time, y/n frowned at his question.
"What?" Tomura snapped angrily.
"But..." her voice weakened as she spoke. "Intelligence is a stat too." Y/n couldn't help but feel like Tomura's previous charisma comment was his way of calling her stupid as well.
Tomura's sharp expression softened a bit as soon as he heard y/n's response. The villain lightly ran his thumb over y/n's cheek, and he gave y/n a small smile. Y/n felt like her heart could stop at any moment.
Seeing one of Tomura's rare smiles was precious enough to kill. For a short second, y/n forgot how to speak. "You know that's not what I mean," Tomura replied.
Still entirely stunned by his smile, y/n replied weakly. "Uh-huh." His fingers lingered around y/n's skin, and she felt like she could just melt under his icy touch. Y/n gathered all of her willpower and brought herself back as she reminded herself that Tomura could actually do something like that.
Y/n wanted to stay home, seeing the blue-haired villain in such a good mood made y/n feel awful that she needed to leave. She gave Tomura a small frown. "I have to go."
Tomura slouched into the couch as soon as y/n walked away. He stared blankly ahead of him before looking to the side and noticing his faithful advisor reading a newspaper in the other room. The blue-haired villain didn't see him sitting there, Tomura felt thankful that he didn't say anything embarrassing in front of the shadow-like man.
The silence was cut by Kurogiri's deepened voice. "I'm surprised you're okay with her leaving so often."
"It's for the benefit of the plan," Tomura said. The two looked at each other and then turned away in silent agreement that Tomura was speaking the truth.
Tomura looked just as calm and collected as he typically did on the outside. However, he was in turmoil on the inside. He kept reminding himself what happened last time y/n was injured going out on her own. The villain tried to tell himself that she wasn't as frail anymore. Seeing that gentle look on y/n's face every time they spoke made Tomura doubt himself.
Y/n came rushing out of the room, dressed up for her interview. Tomura felt her soft lips touch his cheek. As soon as her lips parted from his skin, he felt a strange residue left behind. The villain let out an irritated whine as he tried to rub whatever it was off with the back of his hand, only to have it smear.
Distracted by the awful feeling on his cheek and hand, Tomura didn't notice y/n had gone anywhere until she returned. He saw red tinting her lips as she reached out and took Tomura's hand in hers.
With a cloth, dampened with warm water, y/n lightly rubbed at the red smear on his hand. As he watched y/n remove the mark, tomura could feel his temper simmering down. He felt y/n take his jawline and gently rub his cheek.
He looked up and saw the warm look in her eyes. Tomura's gaze shifted down towards his level. He followed her neck down to her collarbone and further down. He shifted in his seat, uncomfortably. Y/n let go of his face. "Ah, sorry, I guess you would have preferred to wipe it off yourself, huh?" Tomura didn't respond to her question; instead he simply looked away from her.
He watched as y/n gave him another inviting smile before walking to Kurogiri. He listened to y/n talk. She asked to leave early so she could survey the area. She wanted to get a feel of when the heroes pass by the store. Tomura heard Kurogiri praise y/n for being so thorough, and before the blue-haired villain knew it, y/n was gone.
He looked around the room, unsure what to do with himself. Whenever y/n wasn't around, the house had a much different atmosphere. It felt cold. The villain was left feeling hollow inside, he scowled at the feeling.
Tomura got up and wandered to the bedroom. He laid down on y/n's side of the bed. He picked up her scent lingering all around the room. For a moment, he felt whole again. Tomura closed his eyes, deciding a nap was the best way to pass the time.
"That was so much worse than I remember." Tomura opened his eyes almost instinctively as soon as y/n's voice echoed into the room. "Yeah, I did lie to get the job, but it was still stressful."
Tomura sat up and rose to his feet. He refused to let y/n even think that he sleeps on her side of the bed whenever she leaves. He rubbed his eyes with his palm. The bedroom door swung open, and he followed y/n's voice to the other room.
He was greeted to the sight of y/n looking up at him with a bright smile and her eyes sparkling. "I got the job."
Tomura didn't get why she was so happy about it. At the same time, he didn't want to ruin her fun by reminding her that the job was only going to be temporary.
"He wasn't there today, which is too bad." Y/n placed her hands behind her back. "That might be a good thing, though. I don't know what to do next."
"All you need to do is find a way to keep tabs on him," Kurogiri said. "We need to act with caution. If he knows you're up to something, the plan will fail. We also need to make a plan fast and act quickly, or we will fail."
Tomura yawned. "We have a plan."
"We do?" Kurogiri asked.
Tomura placed a hand on y/n's head, he lightly played with her hair between his thumb and middle fingers. "This one will create an opening for us to snatch him up. We will get him to talk about Tartarus and explain everything we need to know."
"But what happens if someone notices he's gone?" Kurogiri asked.
"We will just have to act quickly. Get our information, drain his blood, and send Toga out." Tomura's hand ran through y/n's hair and traveled along her face. Palm up and fingers spaced apart from each other, Tomura's middle and ring finger rested under her chin as he lifted her head up.
"That's a death sentence," Kurogiri snapped. The blue-haired villain glared in his direction. "You can't expect Miss Toga to go alone."
"Of course not. I want the headlines to say The League of Villains broke into Tartarus, not some unnamed school girl." Tomura's head was like a storm, he wanted to lose his temper and snap at the shadow-like villain for such a stupid comment. However, feeling y/n's skin against his fingertips kept him grounded. "Compress will use his quirk. Toga will carry most of The League into Tartarus."
"Most of The League?" Kurogiri replied in a suspicious tone.
"Y/n will not be coming with us. This raid is too high for her skill level." Tomura glanced down to y/n and saw a frown plastered on her face.
"What, no. That's not fair," y/n spoke up.
Tomura cocked his head to the side. "Since when do you jump at walking into danger? It's fine, you did your job. When it's time for us to go, you will say here in safety and wait for our return."
Y/n stepped back, removing herself from Tomura's touch. "I'm going too." Tomura could see her eyes light up with intensity. "I've done literally everything so far. I deserve to go just as much as everyone else."
Tomura felt his anger rise, "I said no. you'll just be a burden to the group if we have to keep you safe as well."
"I can take care of myself." Y/n's voice cracked as she argued with Tomura.
Frustrated, Tomura turned his back to y/n. "Fine, do as you wish. It's not my fault if you get yourself killed." He walked into the bedroom and slammed the door behind him.
Tomura paced around the room. He felt frustrated that he wasn't as mad as he should have been. If it were anyone else going against his direct orders, Tomura would have cut his losses and killed them on the spot. Not only could Tomura not kill y/n, but he was more panicked than he was angry. That realization scared him the most.
Tomura heard a knock at the door. He stopped pacing and looked over. "What?" he snapped angrily, knowing who was on the other side.
"Can we talk?" Y/n's sweet voice echoed into the room. She cracked the door open. "I'm sorry."
He crossed his arms. "So you're not going?"
"I didn't say that," y/n replied as she slid through the door and closed it behind her.
Tomura gritted his teeth to stop himself from saying something he was bound to regret later. "Why are you so stubborn about this?"
Y/n stayed standing at the door. "If you remember that charisma comment you made years ago, you probably also remember what you said shortly after that."
Tomura paused, unsure what she was getting at. "Refresh my memory."
"If I find myself alone, The League will be my new family," y/n said. Tomura vaguely remembered saying something to that extent. "I don't want to wait here for you all to come back. I don't want to be alone again."
Tomura stayed quiet and listened. He didn't understand her point. The villain still thought it was stupid. But if there's anything he knew about y/n, the villain knew she was just as stubborn as he was when she wanted to be. The two of them could butt heads about this for an eternity, and Tomura knew neither of them would give in. There was still time to convince her otherwise. For now, Tomura decided to let it slip. She can win this fight, but he wholly intended to win the war.
"Okay, fine." Tomura looked up at her. "But you're welcome to change your mind at any time."
Y/n had a look of disbelief on her face before she smiled at him and rushed into him, pushing him onto the bed. Y/n straddled his lap. She wrapped her arms around Tomura's torso and squeezed him. "Thank you," she muttered into his chest as she hugged him.
Tomura looked at his hand and placed four fingers on her back. He tried to will the final finger to do the same as the others. It was useless, he couldn't do it. He felt y/n's soft lips graze his neck. "I really mean it, thank you."
He shifted uncomfortably having y/n on top of him. Y/n's head rested on his shoulder. His face felt unusually warm. It appeared it was another symptom to add to his list. Whatever his nameless disease was, Tomura felt like it was getting worse.
