Chapter 23: Tango
I can't wait for next chapter
:)
And I know I need to do English work but I really have no motivation.
And this chapter is also cool.
Another while passes. Pearl continues to be my teacher, and I learn how to See and then Watch. I gain knowledge of watcher history and powers. I'm warned against vexlings and befriending hybrids and how to fight and stop them if they come close. I build, gaining talents of controlling other people's code, making them glitch, removing their weapons, arming myself from nothing. I'm even moved from the room with the other watcher students into a private bedroom next to Pearl's where I spend all my free time practicing and training, until it all pays off, returning there.one day to see a note on my bed.
Tango, I read the galactic easily.
We have decided you have passed your watcher training. Tomorrow you will go to the main hall to be given status as a true watcher.
Excitement fills me. It feels like years that I've been training... And tomorrow I'll finally gain what I've done it for. I lie down, excitement filling me, and quickly drift asleep.
I wake early the next morning, scrambling to my feet, pulling on my robes, muttering through as much information as I'll need if it turns out to be a test... And, leaving the room to run over to the main room, I crash immediately into Pearl.
'It's today!' I explain, excitement filling me. 'I'm... I become a true watcher today!'
She smiles beneath her mask.
'I know... You should run along. You don't want to keep your leaders waiting.'
I do, darting along the corridors, towards the front and into the main hall. The four watchers are there. I run through their names in my mind, awe and excitement filling me in equal parts. I slow down, heart racing, and come to a stop in front of their thrones.
'Greetings, Tango. I expect you are aware why you're here.' The 𝙹ᒲリᒷᓭ ᓵ∷ᒷᔑリ↸𝙹, the one I'm closest to, speaks in galactic. I nod.
'To become a true watcher.'
A smile.
'Of course.'
'And the first question we must ask you...' The 𝙹ᒲリᒷᓭ !¡∷𝙹ℸ ̣ 𝙹⊣ᒷリᓭ asks. What kind of Watcher?'
I only need a couple seconds of thought.
'All-creating.'
Another smile.
'Then it shall be so.' Excitement fills me as the 𝙹ᒲリᒷᓭ !¡∷𝙹ℸ ̣ 𝙹⊣ᒷリᓭ steps forwards. I bow down, head lowered.
'The halo of protection. The symbol that you will protect and defend your fellow watchers and any worlds you Watch.'
A spark of magic. They step away, replaced by the 𝙹ᒲリᒷᓭ !¡𝙹ℸ ̣ ᒷリℸ ̣ ᒷᓭ.
'The wings of power. The symbol that you, as a watcher, are more powerful than other players, be they mortal or obscenum.'
There is no weight from my new wings, instead a flicker of golden light on the ground around me, a feeling of warmth. They step away, and the 𝙹ᒲリᒷᓭ ᓵ∷ᒷᔑリ↸𝙹 steps forward. For a moment confusion fills me. Shouldn't it be all-seeing next?
'The mask of sight. The symbol that you will see all that has and is happening, regardless of your mortal vision.'
Purple silk fabric covers my eyes, tied behind my head into one. Instantly, I start Seeing what my eyes would've seen, as the 𝙹ᒲリᒷᓭ ᓵ∷ᒷᔑリ↸𝙹 continues.
'And the cloak of creation. The symbol of your ability to defy the rules of worlds to create and do whatever you want with the magic and creativity you possess.' They step back. I rise, and See myself properly.
My wings are fire - bright, burning with a constant flickering warmth. Gold embellishes the cloak, the same deep purple as the thick, silky fabric covering my eyes. My halo of purple, glowing faintly. I smile.
'Tango. You now proudly bear now all symbols of the Watchers. The Halo of Protection. The Wings of Power, the Mask of Sight and the Cloak of Creation. And, in taking these symbols, you willingly reject the life you once had as an unknowing mortal. From now on, you will be known, not just by your name as a player, but as ꖎ⚍↸⚍ᒲ ↸𝙹ᒲ╎リ╎, Game-master, and you will serve a noble role as an all-creating watcher for as long as you live. I hope you continue to grow in this power and knowledge, in protection, power, sight and creativity, for the rest of your life.'
'Th... thank you.' Is all I can reply. 'I will use my powers for good.'
'I'm glad. Now, return to your room. I'm sure Pearl will want to celebrate this day with you.'
I run from the room, unable to resist kicking off the ground, gliding along, and continuing. I See the watcher leaders behind, the 𝙹ᒲリᒷᓭ ⍊╎↸ᔑリℸ ̣ ᒷᓭ slipping away into their own corner of the fortress. The strangeness of the 𝙹ᒲリᒷᓭ ᓵ∷ᒷᔑリ↸𝙹 giving both mask and cloak rises in my mind again. Why not the little-seen 𝙹ᒲリᒷᓭ ⍊╎↸ᔑリℸ ̣ ᒷᓭ? But I don't question for long, instead continuing over to Pearl's office.
I call her name, breaking into another run, knocking on the door until she appears.
'Wow. Those... Your wings are really cool.'
'Thanks! I flex them, getting another 3rd person view. My ability to See has already grown massively with the new mask. Pearl smiles.
'Come in... Tell me what your watcher name is.' She adds. I smile.
ꖎ⚍↸⚍ᒲ ↸𝙹ᒲ╎リ╎.' I recall.
'Gamemaster. Nice.'
'Yeah, yeah... I wonder why, though.'
'Well, it's probably because of Decked Out...' I frown. Pearl quickly explains.
'An idea you had before you got here. Don't worry about it. I assume the Watchers were thinking about that when they gave your name.'
'Yeah, sure.' I can't remember anything called 'Decked Out'. But I can't remember much of my life before getting here. It was so long ago...
'What's your watcher name?' I ask instead. Pearl turns to me.
'!¡⚍ᒷ∷ ꖎ⚍リᔑᒷ.' And then, when I don't know the translation. 'Child of the moon.' She sits down at her desk. 'Listen...' Her voice turns regretful. 'They won't want you to know, but I've... Been sent on a mission. To.... Another world. Deal with something there.'
'I thought... That was for all-powerful and all-protecting watchers.'
'I don't know why I was chosen but... I was. Me and the 𝙹ᒲリᒷᓭ !¡𝙹ℸ ̣ ᒷリℸ ̣ ᒷᓭ.'
'What world?'
A pause.
'Hermitcraft.'
