Chapter 14: Tango
Watcher time :D
I don't wake up the first morning in the Watcher-castle-place because I don't fall asleep to begin with. I lie awake, cold, alone, reliving everything in the tower over and over and over... The other noises in the room keep me awake too. The other people. Trainee Watchers. ᔑꖎ⚍ᒲリ⚍ᓭ, as they call them. Us.
'Good morning, ᔑꖎ⚍ᒲリ⚍ᓭ.' I try to sit up as a watcher enters the room. Black hair. A fabric mask like the other one I saw. But their clothes are less embellished. I assume a lower ranking. 'The first lesson of the day will begin shortly. I would recommend getting on your robes and heading towards the classrooms.'
We all obey. From whispered conversations the previous night, I've been shoved in with whatever the newest class is. I still know the least of anyone, dread filling me as the idea of not knowing the basics and falling further and further behind. What would happen if I failed? Would they kick me out of the school? Would they return me to Hermitcraft? Equal parts hope and regret fill me. I don't want to go back and face the aftermath. Bdubs dead. Impulse... knowing it was my fault. But he'd never blame me. And perhaps that'd be the worst part of all.
I finish struggling into the ᔑꖎ⚍ᒲリ⚍ᓭ robes I've been given to wear over the basic black shirt and trousers. No mask, cloak, wings... the other students told me we don't get them until we graduate and become true Watchers.
I follow out of the room, one of the last out, prepared to join the crowd and remain out of my depths. But before I can, there's a hand on my shoulder and I stop.
'Tango.' It's the Watcher who woke us up. 'We are aware of your... newness to the Watcher Fortress, and our magic in general. So the 𝙹ᒲリ╎ᓭ ᓵ∷ᒷᔑリ↸𝙹 has decided to give you a mentor... follow me.'
I do, trying to memorise my way along corridors and into a small classroom. Another Watcher is already there, smiling over at me. I don't understand the brief galactic explanation to them before the door is closed and I'm left with them.
All I can do is take in their appearance. Their long brown hair is the only feature apart from their normal watcher clothes and their dark blue wings.
'Welcome, Tango.' A female voice, and an accent I recognise as Australian. 'Please, sit down. There will be a lot of talking.'
I do, taking a seat across the room to her. She continues.
'Now, before we continue, I should introduce myself. My name is Pearlescent Moon, but you can just call me Pearl. I came here, barely more knowledgeable than yourself, but from another server. I hear you're from... Hermitcraft?'
I nod. Something about Pearl's name is familiar. Like someone's mentioned her before.
'I heard it's a nice server... if you're a fan of hybrids and weird magic. Which the Watchers don't want you to be... now, we should get onto your lesson. How much do you know about watchers already?
'Uhh... they have wings and masks you don't get until you finish training... they have stupid powerful magic, and my friend Grian used to be one and...' I stop, seeing Pearl's expression. 'Do you know Grian?'
'Never mind. Keep going.'
After a moment, I do.
'Grian's the only Hermit who doesn't realise the Watchers are bad.'
'Why do you think they'd bad?'
'They badly hurt one of my friends and killed another... oh, and they hate a lot of people on the server that are my friends?'
Pearl sighs.
'They would've been provoked.'
'By what?! Us existing?' I snap back.
'It isn't important. You're on their side now. You're one of us.'
'No!' I stand, slamming my hands on the table
'Tango, sit down.' I don't move. Why would I listen to this Pearl idiot? 'Tango...'
I storm towards the exit, ready to break out the room whatever-
I glitch back to the chair. Purple magic glows around Pearl's hand.
'Hey!'
'I told you.' An almost apologetic tone mixes with humour in Pearl's voice. 'Now, don't talk, and I will tell you everything you need to know.'
I stay silent, mutinous, as she continues.
'Now. There are 4 kinds of watchers, each led by a different leader, with different powers and a different symbol for each.' I stare blankly as Pearl splits the page of paper summoned in front of her into quarters. 'All-powerful, the wings; all-seeing, the mask; all creating, the cloak; and all protecting, the Halo. Which do you want to hear about first?'
I don't reply.
'You can talk now.'
Knowing there's no other option but obeying, I point at all-powerful.
'Nice. All-powerful Watchers focus on learning about other magics, and the 𝙹ʖᓭᓵᒷリ⚍ᒲ. Their powers are limited themselves...'
'Then why are they called 'all-powerful'?'
'Because they know all powers. All-powerful Watchers know how to stop the magic of 𝙹ʖᓭᓵᒷリ⚍ᒲ like vexlings and allayans with curses, magic and imprisonment. As well as this, All-powerful watchers work with the mind and mind control, changing memories, making people relive memories... and, of course, their symbol is the wings that Watchers get. The more powerful an all-powerful watcher, the more wings they have. Most have 2 or more pairs... which next?'
'All seeing?'
'They can see anything.'
For a moment I don't speak, expecting more.
'Is that it?'
'An all-seeing watcher can see anything within the world they're in, wherever it is, and some can see past that. The all-seeing watchers also handle the history of the watchers, since the most powerful can see a place as it no longer is... but they need to do it by covering their actual eyes, hence their symbol being the mask. Which next?'
'All creating.'
'This is the type I am.' Pearl gives a smile. 'All-creating watchers... basically have admin powers, but even more. They can control the code, and other players, create mobs and blocks from thin air. They can change game-modes... destroy stuff instantly, get rid of and give themselves items.'
'The code?'
'You don't even know about the code?'
'No?'
'Well... you've got a lot to learn... the last kind of Watcher is All-protecting. They can admin for other worlds, and focus a lot on the people of a world. The leader of the all-protecting watchers has also claimed leadership over all the other watchers. The most common example of all-protecting watchers influencing a world is... Evo.'
'Evolution. Grian's world. But... what's going on with this whole code thing?'
'It's the basis of most Watcher magic. The ꖌリ𝙹∴ꖎᒷ↸⊣ᒷ.'
'The... the ꖌリ𝙹∴ꖎᒷ↸⊣ᒷ?' I imitate the galactic as bast as I can.
'The knowledge that this is just a game.'
Wasn't expecting this to become the Matrix but *shrugs*
