AotD - 5

"No, no, he wouldn't. He would never", Koschei stuttered.

"I am so sorry, my child. I'm sure he had a good reason", Theta's mother lilted, and she heard Rassilon's voice echo in her head.

"Good, good. He will reveal more if he has nothing to lose. I am genuinely surprised by your intelligence Zenliss. Though any Gallifreyan that chooses Dardrath as her partner surely must not have much brains about them, huh? Keep it going and the 'promotion', as you so bluntly put it, is yours".

She nodded to herself, and continued to stare into the fearful brown eyes of Koschei. He looked away into the space where the Time Vortex stood, covered so no one could see what was within it.

"Let us begin", Rassilon said with a terrible voice and two guards seized Koschei by the arms, plodding him next to the covered cylinder. He had his gloved hand on the sheet covering it, and with a gently pull, it revealed the very heart and soul of Gallifrey to Koschei...

"I can't see a flipping thing", Theta whispered to himself. It was pitch-black, but he could hear the sliders moving slowly in front of him. He shook his hand and let a glow of regeneration energy light the room around him. Thick wires strung the walls, holding various monsters captive.
"Theta", he heard a ghostly whisper in the shadows. "Come towards me".
"Who is that?"
"Sorry to scare you. My name is Idris and I died fourteen years ago. My spirit didn't get uploaded to the Matrix properly, so I sort of 'haunt' the Cloisters".
"Are you friendly?" he asked, then realising how cliché he was being. In the distance he heard a soft chuckle and the lights flashed on.
"Sure".
"What do you do down here? Must get lonely", he said, starting to venture into the darkness.
"I listen to the people upstairs. They're very loud, and they talk about boring things like time a lot".
"Time isn't boring. It's... Amazing".
"And it runs out quicker than everything. Do you want to explore it, one day?"
"In fact I'm going now. To find myself a TARDIS".
"A TARDIS, you say? They are underneath the Cloisters. Sometimes I can hear the souls of them calling out to the stars. Wanting to visit them".
"Would you like to?"
"More than anything in the world. It is hard being in the darkness when you could be with the light above".
"Well then, maybe you could be transferred into a TARDIS. Become its soul".
"Really?" she answered, excited. Theta felt himself be pulled forward, past all the defences. He reached a sandy area, without any guards, and on the floor was a large Gallifreyan symbol. "The code's Silgaiet".
"The ancient Gallifreyan word for password", Theta laughed, and quickly inputed it into the circle. A blinding white light glowed from the manhole, and he stated into it. Idris flew past him, pushing him in, until he landed at the bottom with a bump. The room he was in was all white, with TARDIS's parked on the sides.
"This one, this one", he heard Idris say, and he moved towards the one to his right. The door opened to the classic interior he had seen in his textbooks. Big grey circles on the walls, a tall orange column in the middle of the console and levers across the controls. The door slid behind him, and he immediately got to work.
