*Chapter 8: Roxie🎶
I hummed a song while sitting on a bench while Nate was asking people questions about my sister's wareabouts. I was forced to wake up early over and over for the pass few days since we been here, so I didn't really have the energy to be excited and run off somewhere.
Nate always turned to see if I went somewhere, but I haven't ate yet, so I didn't bother trying to lose more energy and just played my Kalimba while softly singing to myself.
"I remember you and I, when I'm awake at night..." I sang acoustically like I do with anything I sang "so give it up for fallen glory, I never got to say goodbye... I wish I could ask for just a bit more time..." I looked down, holding back my tears "it's like, you still got the right to know what's going on... as I struggle to remember how you used to look and sound. At times I still think I can spot you in the crowd... every step I take, you use to lead the way... now I'm terrified to face it on my own..." My mind wasn't fully awake, so I could only think of the dream I had last night about my father. I almost didn't notice I was attracting an audience and had some money in my open bag
Song: You're not there by Lukas Graham
"Hm?" I looked around confused at everyone clapping for me. I smiled softly and waved "Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it" everyone complimented me before they went on their way. I put my instrument away while looking at how much money I earned "Well, I didn't expect that"
"You were dazed while playing and didn't even notice people surrounding you?" Nate walked back to me "You played beautifully" I smiled and looked at my bag, feeling shy on my small talent "You alright? I would expect you to jump up and hug me after complimenting you" I giggled and stood from my seat
"Sorry, but you won't get much out of me early in the morning" he looked confused "Let's go and eat now, I'm starving" I lifted my bag "And we can use the money I earned on accident!" He nodded and walked me to a cute little restaurant with a patio, where we sat and ate some yummy food. I hummed to myself, glad to finally eat something after not even eating yesterday
"Who was that song about?" Nate asked
"Oh, my father" I admit
"Your dad? Huh... Rosa didn't talk much about her dad. Is there a reason why she neglected to tell anyone about you and him?" I was about to respond before I looked to the side to overhear an argument between someone.
"Roxie, don't try to stop me!" Some old man in a captains uniform told a girl in a punk outfit "I'm off to Pokéstar studios to live up to my true potential! My dream is to be a ship captain and a movie star!"
"Get real"
"Get real!" The girl and I said at the same time "You're a captain already, aren't you?" The girl glared "if that ship doesn't move, you're going to cause allot of trouble!" The captain sighed.
"Oh, dear daughter. You split your time between your responsibilities as a gym leader and with your band, right? I can do that, too!" He waved and ran off to a random direction. The girl shouted out of anger and started talking gibberish, which made me laugh out loud.
"Cam!" Nate warned, whispering "Keep your voice down!" The girl appeared out of nowhere and slapped our table. Nate jumped while I casually smiled at her.
"Hey! What's so funny?!" She glared at me "Me and my old man were having a private conversation!"
"Awe, sorry to break it to you, but if you're telling your business for the whole world to hear, it's not really private, is it?" I kept my smile on her irritated face with her eye twitching "I'm amazed you can be a gym leader and be in a band! You must be multi talented" she looked like she didn't expect my compliment and leaned away from the table "Don't be mad at your father. I'm sure he's just admiring how amazing you are, but looking into his logic, what he wants doesn't seem right" she crossed her arms and turned away.
"It's not that doing a double duty made me mad, it's exactly what you said. Keeping people from getting where they're going because of sheer selfishness is unforgivable!" She pulled her hair in frustration "I've HAD it!" I waved my hand to calm her down.
"Don't be so upset, maybe you should-" Nate cupped his hand on my mouth "mm!" Nate removed his hand and looked at the girl looking at us.
"You shouldn't settle anything while you're angry, so take some time to let him figure it out" The girl sighed and nodded.
"Yeah... I'm going to the gym. Thanks" she put on a smile "I'm Roxie, by the way... thanks for listening" she walked away. I drank my pink lemonade and started eating again.
"Do you not know what you're not allowed to do? You're forbidden from giving advice. That's what Looker said in the email" I stuffed my mouth with waffles.
"All I was going to say was that she should go see how he's doing instead of being upset" he looked at his empty plate "People can always put their emotions before anything, so I'm sure she just didn't have the time to say the right words" I held my chin to think "but either way, if that captain doesn't get back to the ship, we won't be able to cross the ocean. What can we do?"
"The best thing we can do is just wait" he pounded on the table a bit, looking like he was having a discussion to himself. I ignored it and finished my plate before looking at the view for a bit "Cam..." I looked at Nate still staring at his plate "Look, I'm sorry... I'm just doing my job" I pet his head, feeling his hair, making him look at me.
"It's okay, you're doing a great job. Don't mess up" he frowned and nodded. We got up and continued asking around for the case while hoping the captain would go back to open the ship.
I let Nate do all the talking while I pretended like I haven't noticed someone following us since we got to the city. I made sure my scarf was on correctly so no one recognized my face as Rosas.
"What a pain" I put on some sunglasses and flipped my hair.
"What?" Nate questioned. I bend down to pick up a rock and threw it over into an alley, where lenses were shattered.
"Hey!" Some guy with a camera came out and ran over to us "Why would you do that?! You're going to buy me a new camera!" Nate was too shocked at what I did randomly to say anything while I laughed.
"Oh? I am?" I held my chin "So you weren't just taking pictures of me?" The guy flinched "You don't have permission, sir. I know I might be stunning, but I'm not who you think I am" Nate looked at me for a second before taking his wallet out and showing his badge.
"Sir, I have to see your camera. As a officer of the peace, I'm allowed to recognize suspicious activity and report anyone who takes pictures of this girl" the guy freaked out.
"Y-You serious?!" He looked at me smiling "I'm sorry! I thought you were someone else! I didn't mean to-" he looked at his camera before smashing it to the ground "there! I won't be in trouble now! No hard feelings?" Nate put his badge away and waved him away, letting him run off free. I picked up the broken camera and observed it.
"I wasn't aware someone was on our tail. Looker said you're not allowed to be photographed for entertainment purposes. I'm sure that guy just thought you were Rosa- again?!" I picked up a few rocks and threw them at random directions, breaking a bunch of cameras and getting the paparazzi regret it.
We left the area and there were no more people following us, except for one person "How the hell did you know there were so many people watching you?! Did you really have to break their cameras?" Nate argued.
"I'm not sorry. It's their fault for taking pictures of a random civilian without permission. Besides, no one is allowed to take my picture, so I can do whatever I want to those cameras" I shrugged, not regretting.
Nate looked like he was having a hard time understanding why the rules under me were so strict and random. He doesn't know anything about me, and I know nothing about him. Though he won't ask simply because he knows he'll have to tell me about himself, I decided to ask some questions so our walk won't be so quiet.
"You said you've been spent four years away from your friends because you did something that got you in trouble?" he looked at me "Your own friend doesn't even know why you left, but you've been friends with Rosa for years. Tell me, why are you so dedicated to search for her? Was it really because you thought that you were gone for so long that you couldn't protect her? That would mean you still like her, huh?" He looked down and didn't say anything for awhile.
"I couldn't tell my friends what I did... and my mom was so disappointed in me. She disowned me, and I felt ashamed" he sighed "Why would I bother telling my friends what I've done? I couldn't tell Hugh or the others, and I recently got my freedom back. I felt like if I bothered telling any of my friends what I did, it would be Rosa" his cheeks went red "She was the most understanding... I wanted to feel like someone wouldn't see me as the bad guy, even when I said I wanted to be the good guy. I thought of only Rosa, but she disappeared... and I wanted to find her"
"Do you think you're only wanting to find her so she wouldn't see how bad you are? Do you really believe rescuing her will replace what she may feel about whatever you did? I'm not sure what you did, but I can see where you're coming from. She is very forgiving" I looked down and stopped walking "Even though she's my sister, I sort of feel the same way. What I did... I don't think she'll ever forgive me"
"So we're on the same page" I nodded "man... that sucks" he rubbed his face "She probably didn't even notice that I was gone, so is it really worth it to tell her?"
"I mean... You can just tell her you were training like Hugh thought"
"I know that, but... I just want to tell her how I feel and hope that she doesn't see me as a bad person" I took his hand.
"You can always tell me! We're on the same page, aren't we?" He snorted.
"I don't think whatever you did was as bad as what I did" I giggled "I'm not ready to say anything. I just want to put it behind me, and soon just live my life, hoping Rosa doesn't hate me. I can't lie to her"
"What made you like her so much? I know she's great and all, but when did you know?" His face slowly went more red and quickly turned away. Hm?
"I-It's none of your business! Get out of mine!" I lifted my hands to surrender "Let's just keep going" he looked around the quiet street we were walking "What should we even do? We can't leave the city"
"Why not visit that Roxie girl and get her to talk to her dad?"
"We shouldn't get into people's business"
"So what? I'm sure she calmed down by now. As much as it's good to have dreams, that captain will cause trouble. He most likely picked a wrong time to reach for that dream" I pumped my fist "I want to go see her" he sighed loudly.
"Fine, you're able to do whatever you want anyway" I cheered and grabbed his hand to run him around the city "Do you even know where you're going?!"
"No idea!" I was mostly running because I just knew whoever was following us was someone without a camera, so I can't defend myself by throwing a rock. It would be best to just get away to avoid trouble. Should I confront this person? Maybe... I mean I do have a officer of the peace with me, but I had something else in mind.
The street we were in was oddly quiet for it to be in the middle of the day. I looked around for the person following us. As far I could tell, we lost them for now "We're in a sketchy part of the city" Nate said, looking around with me "You shouldn't run in random directions"
"Someone was following us" I explained. He crossed his arms, looking skeptical.
"And how do you know this? You've broken every camera that was hidden. How the hell did you do that?"
"You tend to learn some skills while you're away" I winked and looked around, ending up seeing a Pokémon gym symbol in front of a building "Well, would you look at that?" I shook his hand and pointed at the sign "We're here!"
"A mere coincidence" he pocket his hands "Well, let's get this over with and see if she can go talk to her dad. The sooner we do this, the sooner we can go to the mainland" I cheered and ran inside "Slow down!"
I ran inside and was greeted with a lobby covered in spray paint writings on the walls, trash on the floor, and a open door that leads to a large empty room with a stage in the back that was playing music.
"Very professional..." Nate commented sarcastically. I danced to the music and ran over to the stage to cheer from down below. The band members noticed me and looked confused. Roxie was singing, too occupied to notice an audience.
The bass player was the first to stop playing "Who let these fans in?" The drummer stopped playing and looked around before waving at something.
"Where is the receptionist?" The base player asked. Nate and I waited for Roxie to stop singing before suddenly stopping and snap at her band members.
"Who said to stop playing?!" She shouted quite loudly. Her bandmates were taken back. I laughed at the reaction, getting Roxies attention "Huh? Oh, it's you" she sat on the stage to face us "How did you get in here?"
"The door was open" Nate said.
"That was amazing!" I cheered "Your band played so well! You're an amazing singer! I've been away for a long time, but are you famous?" Roxie blushed when I said this and looked away.
"N-No... not yet, at least..." she looked back at us "Sorry you had to see that. I'm still upset about earlier"
"Your rock music didn't even seem like it did a thing to calm you down. I don't think this sort of music would cut it" Nate crossed his arms.
"Oh yeah? What do you know about music anyway, pretty boy?" She glared "Can you play an instrument? No, I thought so! It's harder than you think and what I work on makes me calmer" I took out my Kalimba to show her "hm? What's that?"
"It's my instrument! It's not as loud as your guitar, but it's good at soothing others" I started playing "I use to play it all the time for my little sister... It calmed her down after she cried about something" the room was quiet with a soothing sound that brought a smile to my face, always reminding me of the old times.
"Your sister..?" Roxie asked calmly.
"Yes. She's been missing for awhile now, and my friend and I need to get to where we need to be on the mainland" I soon finished my song and put the instrument away. Roxie had her eyes closed before opening them.
"I see... well, I guess I have to go talk to my dad sooner than later. You sound very nice, by the way" I smiled.
"Hey, how did these two come in here?" Two large guys taller than Nate and I walked into the building looking all serious "this is a private meeting. Fans are not allowed to come in unannounced" one guy grabbed Nate's arm. Roxie was about to speak before the other guy accidentally went pass my arm and touched my breast. Everything was silent for the longest. I darted my eyes at the guy who freaked out and jumped back.
"O-Oops... I-I didn't mean to-" I threw up a high kick and landed on his chin, throwing him back and most likely dislocated his jaw.
"O-Oops" I mocked with a smile and looked back at Roxie and her bandmates looking shocked "Anyway, let's go to where your dad is"
"Y-Yeah..." she jumped off the stage and made sure the security guard was okay. He nodded and excused himself "alright, let's go" she said and walked us to a random direction. I could feel Nate glaring at me.
"I can understand what he did was wrong, but violence isn't the answer. He didn't do it on purpose!" I giggled and waved at him.
"How would you react if someone accidentally-" I cupped my mouth a bit "That's inappropriate to say out loud" he looked confused "I was just defending myself. You literally had a five second reaction before you could had done something. Clearly you weren't doing your job~" I sang, teasing him. He looked like he was about to yell before I felt the need to throw a fist and stop it just in time before landing on a strangers face. He froze and jumped back.
"Will you stop that!?" Nate grabbed my arm and pulled me into an arm lock "If you're going to just jump out like that, I might as well keep you like this!"
"Wouldn't be so bad" I teased before looking at the stranger looking at me like I was a star.
"You're perfect!"
"What's going on now?" Roxie questioned us when we stopped following her.
"Young lady, how would you like to be part of a movie we are directing in Pokéstar studios?!" The guy blurred out. I blinked confused, processing that for a moment... huh?
