*Chapter 23: Rain

We ran out the hotel after checking out, which was very difficult to do since nobody was around at this time of night. Route 12 was pouring out in the middle of the night, and we seem to have lost any sight of Hugh.

We took this moment to slow down our tracks and stop running. I was out of breath, feeling the rain soaking me up. I looked at Nate breathing heavily, facing away from me. I could feel something is wrong, and it has something to do with what I was talking about earlier.

"N-Nate..?" I frowned. He didn't turn to look at me "did you hear what I said earlier..?" He controlled his breathing and stood up, still not looking at me "I'm sorry I lied to you, but she didn't want anyone to know! I saw her up in that ship where we faced Team Plasma..." he looked over at me. I looked down, unable to look at how mad he must be "I'm not trying to be the only one who can save her. She asked me to not tell anyone... She didn't want anyone to worry. She sided with Team Plasma only because our cousin isn't here to take care of them. She asked us to help, and I know I should had told you, but I was only keeping a promise... I don't break promises"

"Then promise me something" he came up to me, pissed "Promise me you'll never keep another secret like that from me again! Don't keep secrets!" He glared "I wanted to find Rosa just as bad as you do! Don't you get it? I know she's your sister and all, but I deserve to see her too! She's my friend!"

"And you like her, I know Nate" I smiled weakly "I know. You have every right to see her, but it's not really my fault the shadow triad didn't want to touch me" he sweat dropped "If they did, I wouldn't have been able to to talk to her. Nate, I'm sorry for keeping it a secret. This is my one promise I've broken, and I don't intend on breaking anymore" he held my shoulders.

"You keep promises, so promise me you won't hide anymore secrets" I chuckled weakly.

"I can't do that"

"Why not?!" I held his hands.

"You've kept secrets from me as well" he flinched "it's only natural to keep secrets, so don't expect me to tell you more about myself for a promise you can't even give back. I don't expect you to tell me more about yourself, but I promise I won't keep another secret when it comes to Rosa again. You have my word" he slowly let go of me and dropped his arms.

"We should get out of this rain" I grabbed his hand before he moved "What is it?" He didn't look at me.

"I was doing it for Rosa. Don't be mad at me" he sighed and looked down.

"I'm not mad... Just disappointed I didn't get the chance to see her. You said you felt her before, and that feeling lead you to her. I wish I got to see her"

"You will! We just need to help her, okay?" He looked back at me and nodded "Good... I don't feel right that I broke that promise, but it's better than having to help her on my own. I'm not strong enough, so I'm relying on you to help me"

"Cam..." Nate held my cheeks and made me look at his confused face "What is this?" He flicked the bottom of my nose with his thumbs and showed me something black coming off of it. I hurried to move away and rubbed my nose.

"It's just make up! Come on, we need to get out of this rain" we started running again.

"Why do you have makeup on at night?!" I didn't respond, not wanting to explain what that was. I don't even want to think about it, so we just kept going on and on on foot, stopping at the next town over, and continued our journey to find Opelucid city.

"Stop messing with us, dammit!" Nate shouted, dragging me so we could run away from another legendary aiming to attack me "Why do these legendaries want to hurt you so bad?! First it was Cobalion, now it's that thing!" I looked back at the green Pokémon chasing us that my Pokédex called Virizion.

"Can't really tell you why, but at least our bags are secure inside Banette" I nervously laughed.

"Why are you laughing?! That thing is trying to kill you! That thing knocked out all of my Pokémon! I can't protect you like this, so take this seriously and run faster!"

"I'm running as fast as I can! If we run any faster, we're going to slip in the mud!" I shouted and looked up at Oricorio flying above us "Oricorio! Do something!" Oricorio cried out and went down to attack Virizion, but Virizion was too fast for her and continued avoiding attacks just to get to me.

"Our only chance is to get to the city so it stops following us! It should be close by!" Nate yelled before slowing his tracks for some reason. I slowed down with him confused and watched him shove me into some bushes before looking over at Virizion trapped in a net. When did that happen?

"Awesome!" Some guy in camouflage came out the bushes and walked up to Virizion "This is going to get me rich!"

"Phoenix?" Nate questioned. The guy quickly looked at Nate and put on a big smile.

"Blake!" Blake? The two of them ran towards each other to give manly handshakes or whatever "I can't believe it! You're out? Why didn't you tell me?" Nate nervously laughed "You grew since the last time I've seen yah. How long has it been?"

"Like four years, almost five this year" the guy reached to pat Nate's back.

"You look well! Dude, we have to catch up on some things!" They looked at Virizion "I was on the look out for some rare Pokémon and this beauty came when you were running! I'll split the money with yah since you helped" When they weren't looking, I spotted Iris crawling towards Virizion while wearing leafs like a bush. She was sneaking her way to the legendary to set it free.

"I'm good on money, really" Nate said.

"Oh come on! We can never have too much money!" The guy said before Iris set Virizion free and watched it flee. I sighed in relief, thankful it was freed, but mostly glad it went the opposite direction.

"I have a job now, and I was given a opportunity for my skills. I'm a rookie cop" Nate told him, which made Phoenix's eyes widened in happiness.

"That's sweet! You can continue what you started and make it a lot easier! The cops won't be on your tail!" Nate turned away. What are they talking about? "Come on! Like old times!"

"I can't do that, Phoenix. I have a job to do now and I don't have time for that. I'm looking for something that's important to me, so I don't have time to do things that can get me in trouble again" Phoenix held his shoulders while Iris snuck her way to find me.

"What are you doing in the bushes?" She whispered. I pointed at Nate and his friend talking "Are you watching them? Are you a jealous girlfriend or something?" She joked. I sweat dropped and continued listening to them.

"Come on! It'll be fun! You were the best out of all of us! You still have my number, right?" Nate slowly nodded "good! Give me your information! I'll give yah a call so we can hang out later, as friends and all" Nate sighed.

"Well, when you put it like that, I can't really refuse. It has been a long time since seein yah" Nate smiled "I'll see you later"

"Alright man, I gotta get this Legendary to the truck- hey! Where it go?!" The guy barely noticed Virizion was gone.

"Pokémon hunters are the worse" Iris said "to think Nate was one of them. Well, I don't really know that, but he's a cop. He's probably just friends with that guy. It's so confusing" Iris said. I don't believe Nate was a hunter, since he got ordinary Pokémon in his party. I know Dewott is pretty rare, but the starter Pokémon Hugh and Rosa had are rare as well, so I don't count that. Still... that guy may be the key on figuring out what Nate did in the past.

"Dude! It escaped!" The guy shouted in shock. Nate patted his shoulder to calm him down.

"There's always next time, bud. I have to do some errands in Opelucid City" Iris looked at me.

"Are you coming to talk to my grandpa? He's the gym leader and mayor of this city, but he's not really my grandpa" she giggled. I smiled with her and spotted Nate peaking at me from the corner of his eye, a sign that he was telling me to get out without making it obvious. I grabbed Iris hand and walked with her towards the city with Nate a few feet away, acting like we're not together. That's suspicious...

We eventually turned the corner and made it to Opelucid city, where everything looked futuristic "Oh my Arceus!" I shouted amazed "Unova is amazing!" Iris laughed with me.

"Isn't it?! There's so much here to offer! Everyone in this city is obsessed with dragon type Pokémon, so it's fitting that my grandpa is the mayor! Did you want to come with me and see him?"

"That would be useful. We have some things we like to learn about" Nate finally walked up to us.

"Hey you!" Iris pointed "Here I thought you were a nice guy since we met in Castelia city, but you're a Pokémon hunter!" Nate sweat dropped.

"I'm not a Pokémon hunter, nor have I ever been one" he doesn't look like he's lying "you shouldn't be eavesdropping on people's conversations"

"I was the one that helped that legendary escape!" Iris huffed.

"That's good. Thanks for doing that" Iris calmed down "I don't have control what that guy does. I was never involved in that kind of stuff because I believe Pokémon should be free and choose who they want to be with. Coincidentally, all my Pokémon followed me except for my Dewott, which Rosa's dad gifted to me with my friends"

"Awe! That's sweet! So you're not a hunter?" Iris asked, making sure.

"No" Iris clapped happily.

"Glad to hear it!"

"Who was that guy anyway? He doesn't seem like he's part of Team Plasma" I asked "an old friend from before that time?" He sighed and nodded.

"He wouldn't steal from other people. I don't want to talk about it. Let's just go see Drayden" Iris raised her hand.

"That's my cue! Follow me!" Nate and I followed her through the city to finally talk to the guy that can talk to us about the dragon legendary. I peaked at Nate playing with his Xtransceiver without even looking at how amazing the city looked! I want to ask him why exactly he hid me away from that guy, but with Iris around, I don't think I should say anything.

We passed by a few performers playing some beautiful music in the streets for the holidays. There was an artist playing with a strange looking guitar that had piano keys on it. I gasped at how beautiful it sounds and went over to hear more of it.

"What beautiful music" the guy with the long hair covering one of his eyes looked up from his instrument and smiled at me.

"Thank you, madam. Have any requests?" I held my chin and looked up at Oricorio watching me from a street light. I held my hand out so she can land on it.

"Do you know any traditional Japanese style songs, by chance?" The guy smiled kindly.

"Of course, I'll play whatever you like" he started playing some interesting keys together, which made Oricorio flinch and fly to the floor to listen carefully to the song before slowly starting to follow the notes and dance like a natural. I held my cheeks in awe.

"You're doing it!" I held my heart, continuing to watch her dance to her heart content until the song was over "Oh! Thank you so much for that! You have no idea how much this means to me! Let me get you a tip!" the guy smiled and reached over to take my hand and lean close to it.

"For a beauty like yourself, I'd play every song in the world just to make you happy" I blinked confused before realizing that he was kissing my hand!

"H-Huh..?" My body got pulled away into Nate's arms and looked at the guys surprised expression.

"Hands off, buddy" Nate put some cash into the open instrument case "Have a good day" I watched how cool Nate looked as he pulled me away from the performer and back to where Iris was waiting.

"That was interesting" Iris wiggled her eyebrows "You two seem perfect for each other from how jealous you two get" Nate snorted, looking a bit pink.

"I'm just trying to protect her. That's my job" he turned to me "don't go anywhere without saying anything" I stuck my tongue out and continued to follow Iris towards a house and welcomed us in. There was a man with white hair in the kitchen boiling some water in a kettle.

"Grandpa! I brought some guest!" Iris exclaimed. The man, Drayden, looked over to us before turning off the kettle.

"Juniper told me you were coming. Please, make yourselves at home. I was about to make some tea" Iris escorted us to the living room.

"Gramps, I think you're out of tea, aren't you?" Iris asked. Drayden looked in the cabinets and confirmed it.

"So I have..." Banette threw out my bag so I could give them a bag that's suited for story times "oh! Is this Lum leaf?"

"Yes sir!" I smiled.

"How did you get this? They're very rare"

"I grew it myself. They're in good condition" Iris went over to prepare the tea while Drayden came to tell us the story we've been waiting to hear.

"It was two years ago when the two dragon Pokémon were awakened. The black dragon Pokémon, Zekrom, pursued what is ideal, with the desire to usher in a new world of hope. And the white dragon Pokémon, Reshiram, sought what is true , with the desire to usher in a new world of goodness. Zekrom and Reshiram were once a single Pokémon" this was interesting to hear.

"I've seen this story before" I held my chin "In a dream, two twin princes sought different things and battled against each other. This strange Pokémon wanted to help them, but the twins saw things differently. They fought, causing the dragon Pokémon to split its body into a black and white body" Drayden chuckled.

"Your dream is spot on. I didn't even have to tell you the story"

"I've had so many strange ones, it's hard to keep up. Once you mentioned that they were once one Pokémon, it clicked" he nodded and continued.

"As the story goes, a third dragon Pokémon, Kyurem, also came into existence in that era, and there may be proof of this to be found in a treasure passed down in my family for generations: the DNA splicers. Professor Jumiper's research determined that the materials in the splicers date back to the same era as the materials used in the building the Dragonspiral Tower"

"Where is the splicer?" Nate asked.

"It's stored very safely. I guard them because I don't know what kind of power might lie within them" he took a moment to think "but here's what's been bothering me... Could there be one more dragon Pokémon? Even if Kyurem really exists, we don't know what kind of Pokémon it is" Nate looked at me sipping my tea "for starters, the two Pokémon the ancient Pokémon split into are both overwhelmingly powerful. So if Kyurem exist, could it be just a husk?"

"Cam..." Nate frowned "I think whatever you saw may be right. You said this ice covered Pokémon was hollow-" an explosion had been heard outside the house. We stormed out the house and looked around, spotting a familiar ship over the city. I had a bad feeling about this...

"Shit..." a nightmare of mine popped in my dead of a frozen city. I quickly turned to the guys and Iris and shoved them back inside "Get back inside!" We jumped back inside as an icicle was shot around our direction and barely gave us enough space to leave the house. We managed to and saw that the entire city had large blocks of ice in the streets.

"What's going on..?" Iris and Drayden looked around. Drayden sent out his dragon Pokémon to break the ice, but not even a scratch was laid on it. I pointed at the sky where the ship was.

"Nate... That's Team Plasma" I flinched when feeling Rosa's aura and looked over at Zigzag coming at us with two grunts, one of them to be my little sister. Nate noticed this time, keeping his eyes on her the entire time and let go of my hand when doing so.
