*Chapter 14: Drawbridge
"I don't bite" I chuckled behind my mask I put over my mouth to hide the majority of my injury, at Dewott and looked around, seeing many people gather around these food trucks and having a good time. From a distance, I could see a bridge that connected this route to probably another city "I wonder if we're allowed to walk on that"
"Ori..?" Oricorio frowned. I smiled and pet her head.
"I'm fine now. I just needed some time for myself. Now I need to hide my hair so I don't look like someone that crawled out a well" I softly touched my face "I should had probably asked for ice..."
"Oh my goodness!" A girl with long pretty black hair, pushing a stand of pretty materials and dresses walked up to me with an amazed look on her face "Is that an Oricorio?!" I put Oricorio on my lap.
"You know Oricorio?" She sat next to me, where her stand was blocking so Nate wouldn't be able to see I was next to someone.
"Yes I do! I use to live in Alola before I came to Unova to marry my husband" I smiled at how happy she looked "I seem to notice you have sensu form of Oricorio, which isn't common to have"
"Sensu?"
"Yes! They are elegant and formal as they dance in a traditional Japanese style of dance" I looked at Oricorio, not remembering the last time she danced "May I ask? Why do you choose to have this form?"
"I'm not sure what you mean. I had Oricorio like this. Are you telling me she can change forms?"
"Absolutely! There are flowers native to Alola that they eat the nectar from. Each nectar changes their forms and even typings!" I was amazed to hear this. My father didn't tell me much about Oricorio when he gave her to me "This Oricorio seems close to you, which is rare to see. My grandmother use to have a pa'u style Oricorio, which is a psychic type. She told me a lot about them"
"How lucky that you came and are telling me about this" I chuckled "it's like it was meant to be" she put her hands together.
"I think so! Would you like to know about this style Oricorio my grandma told me about?" I quickly nodded "through its dance, it draws nearby spirits and borrows their power to fight" I looked at Oricorio surprised "as you guessed it. This form is a ghost type! It charms its opponents with its refined dancing. When they let their guard down, it places a curse on them that will bring on their demise" she said in a spooky voice that just amazed me on how amazing Oricorio sounded! "I felt like she was trying to just scare me so I stay away from the purple Oricorios. It summons the dead with that dance. I thought she was kidding at first, but it's true! That's why I'm surprise you have this form" I looked at Oricorio looking up at me. She has an amazing ability... I wonder if this ability is the reason why she likes me, or maybe there's another reason.
"She never gave me problems" I pet her head and looked at the stand in front of us "You have really pretty stuff" she quickly stood up.
"Oh! Sorry! I didn't introduce myself! I'm Alani! I sell merchandise in the park while my husband runs his food truck. We have a bunch of things here, starting from dresses, earrings, hair pins, toys, and scarfs!" I stood up and picked a scarf that caught my eye "would you like that scarf?"
"Yes, please" I brought my hair down so I can tie my hair up and used the scarf to hide the rest of my head. I could finally remove the hair from my face and face the girl completely "It was much needed" I handed her some cash I had on me from when I earned it back in Virbank by playing my instrument "Thank you"
"Are you alone here?" She looked around.
"I'm waiting on my friend to bring food. He should come soon"
"Oh! A boyfriend?" I lowered my smile a little, not wanting to smile at that "He's getting food for you. That's so sweet! I hope you'll have a happy future" she held her cheeks in awe and hid a sad aura in her eyes. I watched her until she noticed and quickly panicked "S-Sorry! I didn't mean..."
"Are you not happy?" I looked at the food trucks "You came here to marry your husband, but this is the life you're living? That look in your eyes didn't seem promising" she looked down.
"I didn't mean to bother you with all that..." I played with her hair, confusing her.
"It's okay. We probably won't see each other again, so might as well let it out. What's the matter?" She frowned before nodding, peaking at the trucks before speaking.
"My husband, before we married, he promised me a bright future and a no worry life. He showered me with compliments and gifts all the time, sending them all the way to Alola where I was from. He said he wanted to marry me and give me the world, but..." she looked down "Everything changed once we eloped. I ran away from home so I could be with him, but he wasn't the person I thought he'd be" she rubbed her arm.
"Why?" I asked. She bit her lips before speaking.
"Please... don't tell this to anyone, but he's been abusive" I blinked quickly, not expecting that "He treats me horribly... orders me around and takes the money I earned here so he can spend it at the bar" she looked stressed "A beautiful stand like this was the only pretty thing he gave me when we married. When I don't make enough sells, he doesn't let me eat until the next day" she sighed "Sometimes I wish I can just go back home, but my grandma passed, and my husband didn't let me attend the funeral, saying it was a waste of time. On top of everything I do wrong, I am unable to conceive..." she cupped her face "I'm sorry for piling this on you. You seem the kind of person to easily share this too. My life has been ruined and I don't know how to get away from it. Sometimes I just feel like killing myself by jumping off that bridge"
"You should" she snapped her head at me, shocked to see how serious I was "If things aren't living up to your expectations, you can always try in another life" I smiled "Sometimes we are stuck where we are because we make decisions that didn't fit us. You cannot leave this marriage unless you want to be homeless, and you don't want to be beaten for something you can't control, so why not just jump?" I pointed at the bridge near us "It's the best option"
"You... really think so?" She frowned. Dewott looked in a panic the entire time. I just ignored it.
"Find a new life, and find that moment of rebirth" I said. Nate showed up with two plates of food.
"I... I understand." I smiled at the girl. Nate turned to her.
"Hi, do you two know each other?" He asked. She frowned at the floor, thinking over what I said, before putting on a smile.
"No, we just met. We were just talking about random things. She bought this scarf from my stand. It's beautiful on her, don't you think?" Nate looked at my scarf, staring at me instead of saying anything. I glanced away, feeling like he was only seeing me as Rosa now. I pretended it didn't bother me and smiled at the girl.
"I hope you find happiness in where ever you end up" I said. She bowed and walked away with her stand. Nate sat beside me and handed me my burger "Looks delicious!"
"I told you to not talk to anyone. What do you not understand?" I ate my fries "What were you talking about?" Dewott repeated its name in a panic "what's wrong, Dewott?"
"Wott! Wott!" It kept panicking. I pretended not to notice, eating my food in peace and just sat here for what felt like awhile, eating, before Nate stood up and offered his hand. I looked at his hand in front of me.
"It's gotten really late now. The trucks are even closed now. I'm sure you're tired" I just looked at his hand "Let's go. Across Driftveil drawbridge is Driftveil city. Looker will be waiting for us on the other side. We've actually been waiting for it to lower down so we can cross on foot" I stood up without taking his hand "Uh... okay" he offered his arm "Let's go" he gave me the arm that I had to use my numb elbow to reach. I bit my lip and looked away "what?"
"Nothing" I held onto the bottom of his jacket "Let's go" he stared at me for a moment before walking towards the bridge as it started to rain a bit. I held a soft grip on Nate's jacket, staring at the texture of the bridge we were walking on. I know he was watching me the entire time, probably questioning why I was acting like this.
I don't even know what to think anymore. My whole goal was just to receive my freedom, be happy with my family, be alone in my fathers old home, and just rot there... but being close to Nate, I felt things I never felt before, yet I feel betrayed when knowing that he liked a face identical to mine. I'm not the one he likes... He's just doing his job. I know that, yet I feel strange.
"Cam" Nate called "You've been quiet. Are you tired?" I didn't answer "I can carry you, if you want?" As much as I want to hug him and let him carry me, I didn't take the offer. I needed to stay on this bridge.
I stayed silent and kept walking until he stopped when seeing something in front of us. "There you two are" Looker's voice spoke. Looker was walking towards us as we reached the middle of the bridge "It's nice to see you two after so long" I snorted.
"Awe, you missed me?" I smiled a little, not in the mood to make jokes, but I didn't want them seeing that something was bothering me.
"Nate, you seem to be intact. How is your adventure with Camilla?" I removed my grip from Nate's jacket and hugged myself, feeling a bit cold from the rain. He removed his jacket and placed it on my shoulders, keeping me warm. I looked at him surprised before he pet my head, looking down at me.
"A real work, but she's not so bad" I frowned as he softly smiled "A bit of a tease, but nothing I can't handle" I put on a smile and softly pushed him.
"Don't tell me you've fallen for me" I looked at the side of the bridge where very few people were walking through "Your heart belongs to Rosa, doesn't it?" Oricorio flew down to me and landed on my hand I opened for it. She stared at me with eyes with a signal. I smiled and nodded, getting the hint at what she was telling me.
"So this is the Pokémon you've been hiding from everyone" Looker observed Oricorio not even looking at him and looked at the bridge. I kept my eyes on the bridge as well, seeing a familiar girl walking up to it and looking down at the water "Strange looking Pokemon there... How did you manage to hide it?" He moved away "we can discuss this later. Come now, let's get out of this rain" Nate reached for my hand, missing when I walked away from them and look up at the girl climbing on the bridge, ready to jump.
"Holy..." Nate paused when seeing what I was seeing. I smiled and walked up to her.
"So you're going to jump?" I asked. She looked up and looked back at me, sobbing with a black eye "that looks new" her husband must've did that.
"It's you..." she frowned "I... I'm going to jump" I smiled and hid my hands behind me.
"Is this what you decided? Is this how you want to leave this world for something better?"
"Yes..." I lowered my eyes a bit, looking at her legs shaking "I... can't take it anymore"
"Ma'am, you're making a mistake" Looker carefully said "There's so much to live for. Please, step down and we can talk about this"
"There's no point... My life is ruined. There's nothing to look forward to..." I hummed and walked up to her.
"Don't get closer!" Looker glared at me. I ignored him and looked up at Alani frowning at me.
"Your mind will wander, and lead you to a place like this. Tell me, what do you feel?"
"I'm..."
"Scared? Hopeless? I understand" I grabbed her leg, making her almost lost her balance.
"Camilla! Stop!" Looker yelled at me. I kept my smile on Alani's terrified face.
"I understand, Alani-chan " she sobbed again "Find a new life, and find that moment of rebirth..." I pushed her off the bridge and immediately jumped down to catch her ankle as she screamed on top of her lungs and sobbed uncontrollably.
"Cam!" Nate and Looker hurried to see me holding onto a hole I could grip well even when wet.
"What are you thinking?!" Looker glared. I giggled as Alani continued crying. Oricorio lifted Alani up and tossed her back on the bridge while Nate pulled me back with the arm I couldn't feel. I stared at it shaking like mad before looking at Alani crying up a storm. I went over to hold her in my arms and let her cry on my shoulder.
"Sorry... But I thought you'd just need a push. You have been reborn. You've seen your life flash in your eyes, and you're seeing a brighter path now" I stroked her wet hair "I could had given you better advice, but the most extreme will send you flying. I expected to see you on this bridge, and now I'm glad we were here together. You're going to be okay"
"I'm sorry..." she cried "I'm sorry..."
"I've known suicide victims who survived their fall, and they all wish they didn't do what they did. They turned their tables... You can do the same now that you've experienced this. Come on" I helped her up with my good arm "I'm sorry I wasn't able to help more properly" she slowly nodded and cried on my shoulder again. I smiled and looked at the guys watching me. Looker didn't look happy while Nate looked betrayed, having his hair all over his face from the rain.
"Why don't you take her to the police station?" I told Looker "Get her the help she needs"
"Don't think you're off the hook for what you did. You're in so much trouble" he helped the girl walk towards a new city. I smiled gently and looked at Nate still frowning at me.
"Why did you do that?"
"Why? I'm not a sane person, Nate. I see things differently and approach them differently. What I did might not have been a good thing, but her eyes are wide open now. She can live a new life and threw away her old one"
"Is that what you think you did?" I turned around "You could had put someone at risk! YOU could had died!"
"Concerned about me? You think I'm going to kill myself for a stranger before I find my sister? Get real" I snorted "You shouldn't expect me to make sane decisions. I know what I'm doing, and even if what I did could had killed me, I wasn't going to let her die. I wasn't going to leave this bridge until I find her again. I planned this, and even if it wasn't smart, you can't say it didn't work" I smiled "Back in the hospital, a lot of people were getting treatment for trying to kill themselves. They said that feeling... that moment of nearby death opened their eyes and see things clearer, that death wasn't an option. Sometimes, I say I want to die, but maybe I just want to see if it opens my eyes" I touched my swollen cheek "this face doesn't belong in a world Rosa lives in. So I doubt my eyes will open wider than they are now" I hissed at the pain when Nate grabbed my bad arm and pulled me back to look at how mad he was.
"Stop it! Stop saying those things! Everyone has a reason to live! Just because you and Rosa look the same doesn't mean you can't live in the same world! You're so talented and can have a bright future if you just look for it! You'll make her sad if you leave!" He was gripping me too hard, making me wince at the pain. He noticed and let go "Your arm..."
"It happened when I was thrown by those thugs" I gently squeezed my bad hand "Even they said my face looks like Rosa's... You even thought I was her when you found me. When the day comes, you won't even notice I'm gone" I walked away "I don't matter in the slightest. I'll be out of your hands one day, which is fine. You won't remember me when you look at Rosa, she's the sun shine of this world, while I'm stuck in the shadows" I looked up at the cloudy sky "Soon, you'll forget who I am" I leaned on my knees, feeling my heart pounding from so much bubbling inside "So please... Stop looking at me like that" I frowned at him, ignoring how much pain I was in and how tired I was "I can't take it... I can't take... another reason to live. Just... pretend this never happened" I gave him back his jacket "Let's just go to bed..." he nodded and put his jacket back on my shoulders, walking me to a hotel where we can have our own separate rooms and let the night fall while tears continue to run down my cheeks.
