"Tolerance and celebration of individual differences is the fire that fuels lasting love"

~Tom Hannah

Connor

After school, I flung my bag on my back and walked out of the highschool premises. Caleb took the car away again. All of this Caleb and Harley drama was making me suspicious and frustrated. They acted quite weird around eachother and this forced me to drop to unexplainable conclusions.

Nothing made sense.

Upfront was a small park. People sat and chatted or merely rested on the lush green grass. Amongst them was a familiar face.

Gina sat leaning to the bark of a tree, her head was facing upwards, staring into emptiness. Since I had time on my hands, I strolled up to her and sat beside her leaning on the same tree.

She turned around to face me, forced a crest-fallen smile and went back to look at the sky.

"So...how's life?" I endeavoured to start a conversation.

A nervous scoff escaped her mouth "What do you think?"

"I think it's pretty messed up" I sighed with sympathy "We're in the same boat my friend"

"Atleast no one cheated on you" her morose glare pierced into mine "I was cheated on. Twice. First it was Caleb and then Harley"

Harley?

What did Harley do to her?

"What did Harley do?" I asked out of curiosity.

"Pfft you don't know? I thought Caleb told you" she sat straight up and gawked at me with widened eyes.

I furrowed my brows indicating that I didn't quite get what she meant.

"Connor, Connor, Connor..." she chanted "You're so gullible. Didn't you notice Caleb and Harley and how they act around eachother? They're so in love"

I couldn't believe that this statement was coming out of Harley's best friend. I looked at Gina with intent. Oh how tolerant she was.

"Y-You think?"

"Think?" she rolled her eyes and bit her lower lip "I know. Since the beginning the two have been good to eachother. My best friend never told me about this. I should've known"

I gulped as the words, that I feared, escaped my lips "You think they're in a relationship?"

"I didn't say that" she said and abruptly stopped talking. Her head suddenly flashed up, her pupils dilated "What if...they are?"

"I fear the same" I stopped as soon as I said that. My palms became sweaty and I felt the urge to capture these words out of thin air and stuff them back into my mouth.

Gina squinted her eyes at me "What're you fearing? I'm the one who should be mourning if it turns out to be true"

Fortunately, Gina didn't question me more about it. I would become dead meat if Gina came to know about my feelings for Harley and she might even feel worse than before because I never confessed.

I became aware of my emotions. I imagined Caleb and Harley being in a relationship and suddenly, it didn't hurt as much anymore.

It was both good for me and for my brother. I still liked Harley but kind of didn't ache for her anymore.

Was I getting over her?

I'd better.

Caleb

"I love you" I whispered into Harley's ear and fiddle with her earring.

"I love you more" she kissed my cheek passionately.

"I love you most" I brushed my lips on her perfectly structured jaw.

She giggled "We shouldn't be doing this in the parking lot of our school" she pushed me away teasingly.

"My car windows are tinted" I smirked and stretched my arms out to pull her towards me but she successfully pushed me away.

"Get me out of this rat hole Caleb" she set her beautiful blonde hair in place "I'm tired of studying"

"Whatever you say your highness" I started the car and pulled out of the parking lot "Any idea where I'm taking you?"

"No" she smiled at me "But I know it's going to be something good because it's your choice"

I felt my face redden. Harley made me feel what other girls failed to. She made me do things to her that I never thought I'd do to any girl.

In the middle of the journey, Harley lifted her hand up and caressed my jawline.

"Harley stop. I'm driving" I chuckled. Her hands slid up to play with my hair. That was it. That was all it took "You're making me horny"

She pulled her hand away and laughed her head off. Her laugh sounded like the jingling bells beneath a dark winter sky.

But...was she worth it?

Was she worth more than my brother's heart?

I shoved the bad thoughts away as I pulled into another parking lot.

"Where are we?" she glanced around enthusiastically.

"Somewhere" I hopped off the car.

I had brought her to an abandoned park lining the outskirts of the town. Very few people visited it. There were overgrown trees and shrubs all around, an old and ramshackle netted basket ball area and a dried pit where there once was a lake.

Even after being so old, this place somehow had an oddly satisfying beauty. I knew Harley would love it here.

When she stepped out of the car, her expression changed from excited to terrified. She started to look around frantically. My smile disappeared.

"Caleb..." her horrified eyes landed on me "We-We shouldn't be here"

Harley's unexpected reaction perplexed me "Why? What happened?"

She sauntered up to me and clutched my hands "I...I...It's not safe here" she stuttered "Let's go okay?" she began to pull me back toward the car.

"It's okay babe" I stopped her "I've been here before. It's safe. We aren't alone, there are people around. Look..." I pointed at a group of guys that stood a few feet away.

She stole glances at the mob of guys I just pointed at and her face went pale with dread. She struggled with my grip on her wrist "Caleb please lets just go"

I narrowed my eyes at her.

What was wrong?

Was she scared of those guys?

I cupped her face with my hands and made her look at me "Calm down babe. Tell me what happened-"

"Hey!" a yell from a nearby person cut me off. I looked back to face the group of guys. One of the guys was now jogging toward us taking wide and sturdy steps.

He had a jet black leather jacket on and his brown hair were spiked.

"Caleb please...let's go!" Harley pulled me back with all her strength. She seemed to be frightened at this guy.

Who was he? I had no idea what was wrong with her but I couldn't leave this guy unanswered.

"Can I help you?" I asked when he was just a few feet away from us. But he didn't look at me, his grey eyes were fixated on Harley, scanning her from head to toe. It made my head heat up with fury.

Then he took a step toward her.

Annoyance took over my consciousness and I pushed Harley away from him "What do you want?"

"Who the hell are you?" he gawked at me.

"I should be asking you the same thing" I leaned forward and clenched my teeth "Why were eyeing my girlfriend like that you turd?

"Your girlfriend?" he asked bewildered and stepped back as if my words burned him. He then shot a glare at Harley "The hell is he talking about Harley?"

My heart skipped a beat.

He just called her 'Harley'. That only meant one thing - they knew each other.

There was an awkward silence lingering in the air as the three of us stood there shooting dubious glances at one another.

After a few minutes of pondering, the guy closed in on me and gave me a little push "Listen carefully fuckerhead, I don't know where Harley found you but I want to get this straight. Harley is my girlfriend...stay away from her"
