Chapter 1: Twin Realities

Two young individuals were walking down a small dirt path together. A small path that led up a heal to a rather large building. Two males who seemed to be around the same age, looking as if they were only six or seven years old. The two were wearing small bags on their back as they walked down the street. At first glance the two seemed rather similar being around the same age and around the same height, even wearing almost identical clothes. However, it would take only a few seconds for one to realize just how different the two truly are compared to one another.

The male on the right had a rather slim figure appearing much skinner than one would expect. He had short neatly kept platinum blonde hair, with dark emerald green eyes. This male's name was King, and the figure next to him was named Adam. He appeared to have a slightly more muscular frame, with hair a strange mix between red and brown creating an almost worn copper to look it, and deep hazel brown eyes.

"What do you think we're going to have when we get there?" Adam asked as he looked at the male next to him. King shrugged hearing this as they continued to walk.

"I don't know, but if we have enough leftovers from yesterday we might just be having stir-fry again," King said as they continued to walk down the path they were on.

"Yeah . . . we should hurry, we don't want mister Williams to worry about is," Adam said as he began to walk a bit faster. As he did King nodded and began to walk a bit faster with him looking up at the building as he did. The building appeared to be roughly two stories tall, with three main portions of the building. The center which stood out acting like an entrance, and the left and right wings of the building.

As the two got closer a sign in front of the building eventually came into sight. A sign that said 'Fairbell Orphanage' and underneath it a few sentences about the building in question. This was the building that the two were forced to call their home. A building that the two had been living in for as long as they could remember. It took the two only a few minutes to reach the building. As they were walking up the steps the door opened and a middle-aged male that was mostly bald opened up the door.

He had dull black hair that was beginning to turn grey giving what little hair he had an almost salt and pepper look to it, the male appeared to be slightly overweight with his belly jiggling every so often and dull blue eyes. When the male saw the two he sighed with a relieved expression. "Oh there you two are, I was starting to worry," The male said as he looked at them.

"Someone ran into a street lamp, we had to wait for them to remove the car," Adam said as he looked at the male in front of him.

"Oh, well that's unfortunate," The male said as he closed the door. "I certainly hope everyone's alright," The male said as he moved in front of the two. When he did the two stuck out their arms to form the letter 'T' as they looked at the male in front of him. When they did the male bent down on one knee to get a better look at them starting by looking at Adam. "Turn," The male said as he looked at Adam causing him to turn in place.

"Seems good, you should be able to wear it tomorrow as well," The male said causing Adam to nod and begin to walk past him. As he did King did the same moving in front of the male and turning slightly.

"I had gym today," King said as he did.

"Gym huh?" The male said as he stood back up, making a slightly high-pitched sound as if he were thinking about something. "Eeehhh, we'll wait and see. Take them off, I'll leave them out to hang and if they still smell tomorrow I'll wash them," The male said as he looked at the male in front of him. King nodded hearing this and began to make his way down the wide halls of the building.

The building was remarkably clean, almost spotless in fact, especially the first floor since the majority of the time the kids weren't down there. As King walked down the hall he began to pass a wall with several photos on it, and little plaques beneath them indicating the year they were taken. Starting with the year '1975' with a new picture being taken every ten years. Each photo was filled with kids of varying ages and one adult to the side.

King continued to stare at the photos until he looked at the year '2005'. The plaque was there, but there was no picture. The photo was set to be taken in just a few weeks. King knew he and the others that were currently staying there would be in this photo. Something that he was unsure about how he felt. He knew so much about this building, even how many people would be in the photo thirty-seven people in all. Twenty-two boys, fourteen girls, and Mister Williams himself standing to the side.

When King reached the end of the hall where the path split into three different directions. King wasted no time in going right and eventually came to a small set of stairs that he began to slowly walk up. It took King roughly a minute to reach the top of the steps, and he opened a door. When he did there was a rather noticeable shift in how clean the floors were. There was a constant layer of dirt on the upper floor, almost always being dirty in some manner.

A fact that wasn't helped by the large amount of kids that didn't take off their shoes as long as they had a say in the matter. King eventually walked into a room with several beds all lined up against two of the walls. By each bed, there was a small briefcase filled with each child's belongings. Most of which consisted of a set of clothes, and a toothbrush. The only other thing in the room besides these items was a large wooden box filled with some toys.

However, each of them had been donated so most were broken, or missing parts. King wasted little time walking over to his briefcase and pulling out a new set of clothes. A set of clothes that he often slept in. King knew he wasn't going to be leaving, so he didn't see a point in putting something else on since he'd just take them off later that night anyway. After gathering his pajamas King walked out of the room and began to walk down the halls once again.

When he did he made a sudden tear near the end of the halls and saw a rather simple bathroom. Three toilets and five showerheads. Each section had a clear cutoff most likely to prevent water from leaking into the main hall. King changed quickly and folded his clothes as neatly as he could before placing them on a bench near the entrance of the bathroom. He knew Williams would get it later so he just left them there.

After he had changed in walked into the same room as before looking around. After noticing that Adam wasn't in the room he began to walk over to his own bed and reached under his pillow to grab a small book. It wasn't much but it was the best King could do unless he wanted to compete with some of the others for one of the broken toys that some of the others were playing with.

King did this as often as he could. Escaping this place almost seemed like a blessing at times. King didn't like thinking about this place and it wasn't hard to see why. Parts of the room smelled often due to some of the children still wetting the bed. Either from past trauma or they hadn't been taught to break this habit yet. While others slept under their bed either by or in one case on top of the suitcase.

The beds were rarely washed, typically only being done when a new child joined them and was given their bed. King felt so disconnected from nearly everything and everyone in the orphanage. They lived together, ate together, played together, but it was obvious that no one was connected and that they were all alone, to the point where many would hear someone crying in the night, and if they did they just covered their head with a pillow and tried to sleep.

Everyone had found ways to fill their time, and this was King's reading and escaping this reality. Then there were the potential parents. While King didn't like the other aspects of living in this orphanage, he absolutely hated it when any adults came to visit them. Many children were excited at the chance to be adopted and taken into a new home. Any excuse was a good one if it meant they could finally leave this place behind. King, however, felt different, he hated being paraded around for them.

Any time they had potential parents they were told to put on their "nice clothes", a set of clothes that Williams would choose when they first arrived. They were only allowed to wear these clothes for special occasions, and having guests over just so happened to be one of those occasions. King hated it because he could always tell he was being judged by them as if they were going shopping for a new set of plates.

This was only cemented further when some of the parents would return whatever child they had adopted before. Treating them as if they were a commodity that could be obtained at their leisure, and returned whenever the 'product' wasn't what they expected it would be.

Many considered King 'lucky' he was given away at birth. He never had a family to connect to, and thus never had to feel what it was like to lose them. However, even this was little comfort, as much as King despised being judged by the adults that came to visit them. His heart would ache every time life showed him what he had to miss out on, and with every reject he felt part of him die inside.

Any sign of happiness that they felt was always so fleeting like a leaf brushing against someone's kin in the wind. And yet King seemed to be willing to take the risk, having formed a bond with one of the other children in the orphanage. The male he had been walking home with earlier that day. The two had become rather close very quickly, and neither was quite sure why that was yet.

As King was reading he was getting so caught up in his book, that he didn't notice Adam walking towards him. Adam then sat down beside King causing him to jump slightly. "Hey, did he make you change?" Adam asked as he looked at King noticing just how different his attire had been compared to when they had been walking home.

"Yeah," King said with a slight nod.

"I knew it," Adam said with a smile. "Also, I asked mister Williams what were having, and he said we were having potato soup," Adam said as he looked at King. When he said this King smiled a bit but quickly hid it a moment later. He didn't like showing many emotions, mainly because it seemed like it didn't matter how much he smiled or frowned, or even cried it would never change the outcome of what was going to happen.

So he tried to show as little expression as possible. "I saw that King!" Adam said as he looked at the male in front of him. "So what are you reading this time?" Adam asked as he looked at the book.

"The baron's thief, it's about these kids that have run away from home and are living with a thief. But a detective is trying to find them and bring them back home," King said as he continued to read the book.

"Oh, that's cool," Adam said as he looked at the male in front of him. He wasn't really sure what to do with the conversation. However, he could hear the faint sound of footsteps coming towards them so he knew he wouldn't have to. And just as he thought a few moments later Williams was by the entrance to their room.

"Boys, dinner's ready, go and eat," The male said as he looked at the several children in front of him. When he said this nearly all the kids got up and began to move towards the door. As they did King took a mental of the page he was on, and close the book, sliding it under his pillow a moment later. He didn't have any bookmarks and he didn't like the idea of folding the corners to help since it wasn't his book it belonged to the school library.

When King's book was safely 'hidden' he stood up and began to make his way toward the hall and like all the others began to slowly make his way downstairs to eat. As he did he saw Williams split off from the ground heading to the left side of the building where all the girls stayed. It didn't take long for everyone to take and seat and begin to eat, and a few moments later several girls joined them and began to eat as well.

As they did King continued to look down at his food. The only thing being heard in the room was the occasional slurp from spoons. King had long since stopped looking around the table they ate at since no one ever made eye contact. Everyone just kept to themselves, even when everyone was all gathered together they all still felt secluded. Some kids finished quicker than others with King and Adam finishing moderately quick.

When they did they walked out of the room and began to make their way back up to the room that they stayed in. The day progressed rather slowly with nothing to out of the ordinary happening. And just like always they began to sleep in their beds. And while some were able to sleep more soundly than others. Halfway through the night nearly all of the children that were living in the building were fast asleep.

However, King didn't wake up in the usual manner. He felt something gently shaking him slowly forcing him to wake. "King, hey King, are you awake?" A familiar voice asked behind him. King groaned a bit still groggy from just having woken up.

"What?" King asked in a rather tired voice.

"Come here, you need to see this," Adam said as he looked at the male in front of him. King groaned a bit and slowly got out of bed as Adam rushed over to the door trying to be both quiet and quick as he did. King slowly trailed behind him as he did tiredly rubbing one of his eyes as he did. As he walked out Adam quickly ran down the halls making his way towards the bathroom.

As he did King looked up and saw something a little strange, there appeared to be blue light coming from the room. King was a bit confused by this but still didn't show too much interest. However, as he got closer he watched as the color slowly changed from blue to purple then to red. All of which caught King's attention. When they arrived Adam smiled and walked into the bathroom.

"What is it you wanted to-" King began only to stop when he saw what Adam was talking about. In the center of the room, there was a strange structure in the middle of the room, floating and turning in place. It also appeared to be the source of the light that was changing color as the crystal seemed to be shifting in-between colors as well. "What is that?" King asked as he moved closer causing Adam to smile as he looked at it.

"I don't know, I came to use the bathroom, and it was just here. What do you think it is?" Adam asked as he looked at the spiraling object. King was silent hearing this as he stared at the object.

"Nightlight maybe?" King asked as he looked at the crystal in front of him. He genuinely had no idea what this thing in front of him was. But a nightlight was the only thing that came to mind. He remembered one of the other kids asking Williams for one since he was scared to walk down the halls at night by himself. So maybe he listened and just got one that was a little strange compared to others.

"You think?" Adam asked as he looked at the structure in front of him.

"Maybe?" King once again said as he looked at the figure in front of him. Adam stared at the crystal for a moment before reaching up to touch the crystal. When he did he immediately began to feel dizzy and took a step back almost falling as he did.

"Woah," Adam said as he looked at his hand. The finger that had touched the crystal felt strange, tingling, almost as if that area had been put to sleep. The tingle then began to spread down his finger to the rest of his hand. "This feels . . . weird," Adam said as he looked at his hand starting to become a bit tired as he did.

"Really?" King asked as he reached up to touch the crystal as well. Admittedly not his smartest idea, but King was curious so he did it anyway. "This is weird," King said as he moved back and began to hold his hand. The feeling was a strange and foreign one, something he had never experienced before. King then got the same feeling of vertigo as Adam and lost his balance falling back and landing on the ground as he did.

"King, I don't . . . " Adam began as he fell down onto his knees his legs having collapsed underneath him. "Feel . . . so . . . . . good," Adam said as he completely hit the ground. When he did King's eyes widened and he began to stand up. He planned on running out of the room but his legs wouldn't cooperate with him falling nearly instantly when he tried to stand up. After seeing this King began to crawl towards the exit. "MISTER WILLIAMS, MISter Williams . . mister," King began only to start laying on the ground.

He wanted to continue screaming but for some reason, his body just wasn't cooperating. King was beyond scared at this point, he was completely terrified. He couldn't move his body, and he didn't know if his friend was going to be okay. It didn't take long for King to eventually close his eyes finally succumbing to this feeling. However, just as quickly as he closed them he gasped and shot up feeling just as awake and alert as he was before.

However, as he did he noticed he was somewhere new. He was outside, and the place around him looked strange, he could see several trees around him. The bark was silvery-blue color, and the leaves on it were a deep blue, the sky that was above them was a deep scarlet red. King was immediately put on edge seeing this only becoming more anxious and scared by the moment. King didn't know where he was, or how he got there, but what he did know what that this place definitely wasn't his home.

"So which one is it?" King heard a new and unfamiliar voice say from his side. King looked around and saw two figures standing nearby. A male who appeared to be in his early thirties with silvery-grey hair, and teal eyes, and a female who appeared to be in her mid to late twenties with long red spiky hair, and dark red eyes, and a rather muscular build. Judging from the sound of the voice he could only guess it was the female who spoke. "The one who's scared shitless or the one who's in the fetal position?" The female asked finishing her question from earlier.

"Neither one of them look too promising," The male said in a calm and collected voice as he looked at the two in front of him.

"Maybe they were-" The female began only for the male to cut him off.

"The farseers are never wrong. Granted their information isn't entirely accurate, but they're never wrong," The male said as he looked at his partner. As they did King heard a groan beside him and turned to see Adam on the ground.

"Adam?" King asked as he looked at the male.

"King?" Adam repeated as he turned to look at his friend. Just as the female had said he was curled up into fetal position with his hand placed firmly on his head. Seeing this King began to move towards his friend. As he did he saw that even the grass beneath them was different. It was now a different shade of red and orange almost as if the grass was trying to mimic the look of Autumn leaves.

As King moved towards Adam he could see that his friend looked a bit different now. His hair had changed, any traces of brown that were once in his hair was now gone. And the color of red also seemed to be much bright now, being an almost crimson red color. Adam was currently on the ground holding his head in pain. "My head hurts," Adam said as he curled up a bit. He had hit his head quite a few times but nothing compared to this.

It felt like someone cutting the sides of his head with a knife. King moved closer to Adam seeing this and when he did he was able to see that Adam's eyes had also changed color, his once deep hazel eyes were now a bright almost sky blue color. "Are you . . . alright?" King asked as he looked at the male in front of him. King was completely unsure of what to do in this situation.

"King, I-" Adam began only to stop when he looked at King. "Wh-what happened?" Adam asked as he looked at the male in front of him. When he said this King looked confused.

"I don't know," King said as he looked around. "This place looks weird," King said as he looked around him.

"No, not thaaaattt," Adam said straining his voice as the pain in his head continued to increase. Unknown to King he had also undergone a few changes of his own, which is what Adam had actually been referring to. His once blonde hair was now a bleached white color, almost resembling fallen snow when viewed from certain angles, and his dark green eyes were now a bright and vivid purple color.

"What?" King asked as he looked at the male still confused about what the male was saying. However, before either of them could fully comprehend what was going on they heard a loud roar. It was unlike anything King and Adam had ever heard before and two were immediately put on edge hearing it. The roar sounded distant and yet at the same time sounded like it was coming from all directions instead of just one.

"That was coming towards us," The male said as he drew a rather large sword. When he did the female grabbed her blade as well and the two began to stand back to back as they waited for the beast. They once again heard the loud roar as it flew above them. As it did King and Adam both felt rumbling pass over them from the wind the beast carried with it.

"Bigger than average, slim wings, thick neck, frills on the sides of the neck. It's a red," The female said as she slowly turned around them.

"Of course it is," The male said with a somewhat irritated tone as he looked around them. A moment later they heard a solid thud next to them and both the male and female stepped in front of the two and looked at the beast as it slowly walked towards them. The sound it was making was unlike anything the two had ever heard. King could only guess this was the sound of the creature growling.

It was a deep guttural, trilling sound and as the creature got closer, King first saw two red specs of fire as it got closer and before long the creature was in front of him. It was walking on all fours, with two large folded wings behind it, a long and thick tail trailing behind it. The two specs of fire King had seen were leaking out its nostrils, giving it an almost angry appearance. It had two frills on the side of its head near the back where its head met its neck, with a few spiked protrusions keeping the skin in place.

It had two backward-facing horns that traveled a short distance down its neck, its scales were thick and overlapped each other with a deep red color. The beast smelled of brimstone and sulfur, and the air around it was distorted and vibrating, almost as if just by existing the beat was able to burn the air around it. However, the part the chilled King the most was looking into the beast's eyes. They were an eerie yellow, with a thin slit down the middle, and black sclerae surrounding the iris.

The beast then opened its mouth and let out a loud roar and began to run towards them. As it did it released a stream of fire causing the two to jump to the side. As it did the beast grabbed King in its mouth and began to fly off. "Damnit!" The female said as she prepared to run after it only to feel a hand on her wrist.

"What the hell are you doing? Let me go I need to go after it!" She said as she looked at the male.

"You and I both know you can't defeat a red by yourself, it'd be suicide. And we both can't go otherwise we risk losing the second as well," The male said as he turned to look at Adam. "All we can do at this rate is hope that the monster didn't snatch our destined hero," The male said as he walked over to Adam and looked at him.

He then bent down onto one knee as he looked at the child in front. "Are you okay? Let me see what's wrong," The male said as he slowly moved towards Adam trying to be slow to not alert the child. When he did he gently touched the child's hands and slowly moved them to the side. When he did his eyes widened a bit in surprise but quickly fade as he looked at him. He could see two horns on the child's head with some blood on it.

Suggesting that the horns had just made their way through the skin. "Well this is interesting," The male said as he looked at Adam.

"What is?" The female asked as she moved closer.

"Our legendary hero, might not be human," The male said as he looked at Adam.
