Chapter 1

Mack could not help it. He felt sorry for her. Who wouldn't with that pitiful, mournful look in her eyes and that pout?  He knew something must have happened to make her sad. What was it?  He overheard her talking to herself as he walked past her. Ugh, his twin. It figures, that his twin was involved in this.  No, wonder, she was so sad.

He slammed his hands down on the kitchen counter when he entered his home. He did not care if the nosy next-door neighbor complained. He had it with his brother breaking girls' hearts in high school, but he thought his brother had grown out of that immature behavior the moment he met Donna. Boy, how could he have been so wrong?  What sort of dork was his twin anyway? He dumped his fiance, a big shocker there. How dare he do such a horrid thing.

He determined he would get to the bottom of this. Why did he suddenly feel the need to come to Donna's rescue?  He had done that many times when Donna and Jefferson were dating. The time when Jefferson did not seem to care her pet cat got hit by the neighbor's car and died due to its injuries, or the time he forgot her birthday. There was a time when their rude Uncle Fred dropped by and said some harsh things that hurt her feelings. All these times and more, Mack had been the one to help her. Yet, did he get thanks for it, no.

He supposed it was silly, but he always had a bit of a crush on her. How could he help it, Donna was everything, but his twin wasn't. She was smart, loyal, lovely, and funny. Jefferson could not tell a joke for anything, he still wore velcro shoes, because he never learned to tie his laces, he was mean, all stuck up, and apparently, he was still unloyal. Oh, Donna, he thought, why'd you waste all that time on the wrong twin?

A few days passed, and he smirked. He sent her some roses, with a card that read, "Dear Donna, I couldn't help but notice you were a bit blue. Sorry, that %^%&%*^ man of yours hurt your feelings again.  Trust me when I say, "Baby you're worth it, ooh, you are worth it,"  Sincerely, a friend.

He did not care if it sounded flirtatious, he knew she was worth it. He wanted to make it his goal to help Jefferson see how great a girl it was he broke the heart of and in the end hoped to win her heart. He sighed.  Why hadn't he tried this before those two got engaged?  Things sure would be easier. Then, again, Father always did say, "Nothing in life that is easy is worth having, it is the things that are plain hard to get well, those are worth every minute."

He wished he could have seen the look on her face when she got the flowers and read the note, but right now, he would have to imagine it.
