Megan's. . .. Replacement?
Megan didn't like it.
Not one bit.
The new girl, Bella, seemed to have taken a liking to Edward. All her weird looks were getting very annoying.
It seemed to bother Edward but also . . . . he seemed conflicted. Not only was the girl a human but something was wrong with her. He couldn't read her mind and Megan could see it was killing him.
The first day he met Bella, it bothered him so much, he had to take a few days off to hunt. It was nearing that time anyway but it just seemed to make Bella even more intrigued and suspicious.
Even the normies were just LOVING her and seemed to forget all about trying to make friends with Megan.
Jessica, Angela, Mike and Eric filled that empty spot at the lunch table with Bella.
Yeah, sure, maybe she was a little bit jealous.
Edward went back to school finally and once again Bella was staring at him at lunch. Megan couldn't help but feel a bit protective of her brother. What did this girl want from him?
But it didn't matter. Edward NEVER got close to ANYONE in any school they've ever been in.
But then Megan saw Edward talking to the girl at her locker!
'What the hell!? Edward, what are you DOING!?'
She knew he could hear her but he ignored her, continuing to talk . . . . horribly. . . to Bella. He was a little rusty with small talk.
But why was he small talking in the FIRST PLACE!?
Before she could march over there, though, Edward whipped around, stomping her way.
She was almost fearful but she knew Edward would never hurt her.
When he was closer enough, she followed alongside him, "What are you doing?! I thought you were the one to lay low?"
"I am. Don't worry about it."
"I'm worried!" she snapped, "Edward . . . . Do you like her?"
"What?" he almost sounded both collected and flustered, "No, don't be ridiculous. I can't like a human . . . not like that. It's impossible."
"Hm . . ." she hummed but didn't say anymore more on the matter.
"Will you shut up already?" he seethed.
"I wasn't saying anything."
"Yeah, well you were thinking it"
"Sounds like a 'you' problem"
As they got outside, Megan skipped off to the others, leaving Edward behind.
Jasper noticed her first and seemed a bit more relaxed, "How was your day, Flicker?"
She shrugged, "I no longer think Edward is gay"
Rosalie snorted loudly, "Where the hell did that come from?"
Alice stayed silent but Megan had a feeling she knew already since she couldn't help grinning like she was.
Emmett looked like he was in deep thought, "Never really . ..thought about it before, I guess . . . . . He's not?"
"Nah" Megan giggled, "Apparently, he has a thing for that new girl, Bella"
"Is he crazy?!" Rosalie suddenly shrieked, "He can't be with a human! It'd put us all in danger!"
"Yeah, I don't really see it" Emmett shrugged, "Maybe he was just trying to be nice?"
Jasper gave Alice a look and that told him all he needed to know.
Alice politely hummed, "We should get going to the hospital"
"What? Why?" Rosalie asked.
Megan was confused, too.
Until they all heard a sudden screech of tires and a loud crash in the parking lot.
Megan felt her instincts jump wanting to go help but from the view they got . . . . .
She saw it right away.
One of the students lost control of their car and it slid on the ice, going straight for Bella who was by her truck.
Edward saved her, shoving himself in between the car and her.
"Edward . . ." Megan groaned softly, "Oh no. . . ." she felt her heart drop.
'He really DOES like her'
At the hospital, Carlisle had them together in the hall after caring for Bella.
Megan couldn't help it, groaning, "She saw Edward, what he did to save her. Are we gonna have to move again?"
"No" Edward shook his head, "No, I'll take care of it. Don't worry."
Rosalie rolled her eyes, "She's just a human. You shouldn't have intervened."
"Rose" Esme scolded her lightly.
Megan froze and sniffed the air. She could smell that familiar scent. One she didn't recognize quite yet, "She's trying to listen to us. We should talk about this back home"
Edward walked towards where Bella was lurking but Megan couldn't see or hear what he was saying to her.
'I don't wanna move again' She thought to herself, 'I kind of like it here. . . . At least here, I can stretch my legs in my shifter form. . . . I can't do that in the city' she moped to herself.
A part of her hated Edward for saving that girl. But then again, it'd be a tragedy if she died and there was someone there that could have saved her. . . .
She was so conflicted, she didn't even notice Edward coming back over.
He pat her back, "Don't worry, Flicker. No one's gonna have to leave"
She had her doubts, though.
A few nights later, Megan awoke with a start, her nightmares getting the better of her again and again.
But this time, something was different.
Usually Edward would knock on her door or check on her. The last few nights, however, she didn't even sense his presence in the house!
'Where's he been going?' but she tried to shake it off.
Usually she'd just lay there and fall back asleep but she couldn't this time.
Feeling restless, Megan stretched and rolled out of bed, 'Maybe I can get Carlisle to make me some tea.'
Carlisle always did like to coddle her and would take any chance he could get to treat her like the kid she used to be. He had a thing for saying, 'You're just growing up so fast'.
Dragging herself down the stairs, she made her way to the main floor where everyone was usually hanging out. Tonight, however, seemed to be a night for themselves.
'They must all be in their own rooms' she thought to herself, 'Maybe Carlisle is still in his office, though'
Megan made her way down the hall, trying to be quite. She didn't want to disturb them if they were too busy. But she saw a light on in his office and it was quiet.
Until a voice echoed from the room, "Come on in, Megan. I know you're out there" it was gentle but she knew just by how he spoke that she wasn't bothering him.
She opened the door, cracking it open. There he was by his desk in an armchair reading one of his old books. He peeked up from one of the pages, "Another rough night?"
She nodded her head, "Yeah . . . dreams. Usually Edward is hanging over me when I wake up, though. Where'd he go?"
Carlisle shrugged a little, "He SAID he was going out hunting but he looked more like he just needed to clear out his head."
"Oh . . . ."
He smiled at her and took off his glasses, putting his book away, "I know you didn't just come down here, though, to ask where Edward was. You want some tea?"
She perked up, "Yes, please!"
Carlisle laughed and got up, leading them both to the kitchen.
When he was finished and poured her a cup, he watched her take a heavenly sip.
"I remember what tea tasted like. It was a long time ago but it really soothed the soul. There ARE a number of different flavors in this age, though. How is it?"
"Great" she grinned and continued to sip. If she was in her wolf form, her tail would be wagging.
Carlisle's smile soon after faded into a solemn frown but before he could hide it, Megan noticed.
"What is it?"
He shook his head, "Nothing . . . nothing. . .. it's just . . . ." he sighed, "Well, you really do grow up so fast, you know?"
"I know" she sang, "But that's what kids do, you know"
"Mortal kids" he fixed, "There are times . . . I wish you were like us. But also, I am very grateful you're NOT. Your life and every year that goes by for you is like seconds racing by for me. I just wish I could have more time with you without you aging so fast"
'Well, that got a little depressing' she thought to herself.
"Carlisle, it'll be okay" she smiled, taking another sip of the tea, "Life is about making the most out of things. Not wishing for things that can't happen"
"I mean, it COULD happen" Carlisle pointed out, "But you're right. . . . You're right. I would never choose this life for you, Megan. I'm happy with just the way you are now."
"Good. You can still treat me like a child, though, if you want. I won't say no to tea, sweets or cuddles"
Carlisle just laughed, suddenly bringing her in for a hug, "I love you, sweetie" and he kissed her head softly, still holding her.
She always did like his hugs. It was as if nothing bad could ever happen to her so long as Carlisle was holding her. She missed her real father. . . . but Carlisle was a damn close second.
But still, the question rang in her head, 'Where the hell was Edward?'. The lie may have fooled Carlisle but it didn't fool Megan.
'He just hunted a couple of days ago. He'd be good for at least two weeks. What is he hiding?'
The next week, it was time for a school field trip and Megan was actually excited. It was at a greenhouse so all of her senses would be lit up. There would be so many different smells and colors!
She was currently on the bus with her siblings and a skulking Edward next to her.
"This is so exciting!" she voiced her opinion, "I love greenhouses so much!"
"Nerd" Emmett coughed, resulting in Rosalie punching him.
Megan rolled her eyes at him but her ears picked up another.
"Right? I mean who actually LIKES stupid field trips likes these? You could just go outside"
Megan snorted at the kid. She could feel her sibling's anger at the boy's comment. No one but THEM were allowed to tease her!
This boy was a jerk lately just to sound cool. She didn't even know his name but she knew he was an asshole.
"Got something to say dog-girl?" the boy laughed. He was sitting just in front of her and turned around to taunt her, not caring that Edward was there.
His insult confused her, though, "Dog-girl?"
"Yeah, you act like one, enough. Growling and shit. Fucking little mutt. No wonder the weirdo Cullens only hang out with you. You're like their pet or something!" he laughed again and this time a couple of others chuckled, too.
Megan suddenly felt her body go ablaze. She never cared what people said about her but that comment hit a nerve for some reason. Was she really THAT weird? She felt a weird feeling in her throat and chest. She wanted off this bus NOW.
"What's the matter? Should I give you a different doggy nickname instead? How about bit-"
Edward suddenly stood up above the boy, staring him down like a piece of meat. She couldn't see her other siblings but she could feel their wrath.
"Um . . . uh. . .n-nevermind" the boy quickly sat back down and even forced someone else out of their seat to get away.
Edward sat down before he could get reprimanded by a teacher.
Everything was calm again but Megan still felt that weird pain. She knew what it was. She just never felt it this strongly before.
What the boy had said really cut her.
Edward nudged her softly, "Don't listen to him. Apparently he's had a weird crush on you for a while and decided being a jerk was the best way to get your attention" he smirked at the teenager's stupidity.
But Megan wasn't laughing.
Edward sighed, "Look, it's okay, Flicker. You're not-"
She couldn't take it anymore, "I don't wanna talk about it"
'I just want to be left alone right now' she thought to herself, 'I'm not a dog . I'm not a . . .'
"Of course you're not, Flicker-" but he stopped, feeling the mental block she placed in her head. It was clear she didn't want to go further into it.
The rest of the ride was uneventful but when they finally got to the greenhouse, she wasn't excited anymore. Not even when Alice and Rosalie stole little pieces of herbs and flowers for her.
The thing was, she loved to smell them. But now it just made her feel even more . . .. weird. Like a dog. Like a . . . .
She glanced at her family. And then she saw Edward talking to Bella, walking with her so closely and whispering. A sadness rolled through Megan.
And knowing what her family was and what SHE was. . .
'Am I like . . .. a pet to them?' she knew Carlisle and Esme didn't feel that way but honestly, she didn't know what the others thought.
It made her chest burn even more.
Jealously sparked again when she looked at Bella.
'He likes her . . . I feel it. I don't understand. Why does everyone like her so fucking much?'
Very soon, she let her intrusive thoughts win.
Edward was so busy talking to Bella, trying to figure her out, he didn't hear what Megan was planning.
Quickly, Megan got closer and lifted the hose just right so that Bella would trip and fall.
Not even Edward was fast enough and Bella fell onto the greenhouse floor with the hose wrapped around her foot.
"Ow! Wh-what?" Bella was confused but Edward helped her up.
Megan didn't like what she did but also, she couldn't help feeling good that she did it.
Until Edward snapped a glare at her.
When they were getting ready to leave, Edward grabbed her arm, walking them behind the bus.
She already felt bad but now Edward was pissed.
"What the hell was that?!"
"What?" she knew it was stupid to lie but she couldn't help it.
Edward gave her a 'look', "Seriously? You remember I can read your mind, right? I know you did that on purpose. You could have hurt her. Why'd you do that?"
She felt cornered, "I . . . I d-don't . . I don't know" she even felt tears forming in her eyes.
Even though Edward was still mad, he felt her pain and softened a little, "Look. . . just . . . ." he sighed, hearing her thoughts run wild, "Megan, no one is going to replace you. Why do you think that?"
She flinched when it was said out loud, "I don't know . . . you just . . like her so much. And . . and I'm . . ."
"You're not replaceable, Flicker" he hugged her, bringing her close, "Just because I might be interested in Bella . . doesn't mean she's going to take your place. You're my sister. Our bond runs deeper. You should know that"
She felt herself whimpering and pressed her crying face in Edward's shirt.
He gently scratched her head and smiled, "Now come on. Let's go home, okay?"
She mumbled incoherently in his shirt.
He chuckled, "I know there's another class. We'll skip, okay?"
She mumbled again and he laughed, finding her display ridiculous yet hilarious, "Come on."
When they got sat on the bus, Megan was still sniffling a little but Edward pulled out something from his pocket and gave it to her.
"Here. I know basil's your favorite."
She snatched it quickly with a grateful look, ignoring some disgusted looks from other students as she began chewing on the herb.
She did feel self conscious. . . but with Edward beside her, she didn't care as much.
That night, it got her thinking.
'Maybe I should give this Bella a chance?'
Something felt off but also . . . right? It was an odd feeling, wanting to try and get close to someone that wasn't her siblings.
A normie . . . .
'But . . . if Edward's gonna continue to hang around her, then maybe I should, too?'
After all, it was only right to see if this girl was good enough for her brother or not.
