Chapter 10

      I lifted my head and looked around.  The sun was just rising in the sky, but it's glare already filled the landscape with defiant light. I was safe from the monsters now.
      I stood and stretched out. My fur pricked as I heard a bird chirping in a tree not far from here. I should catch it. I should, but I'm too scared.
      Pine needles rattled and clinked together, reminding me of how I had left my home. The pine forest was not where I wanted to be, and yet I was here. For the millionth time that day, I wondered about Silver Sky and Comet. How were they? Could they cope well enough without me? Had I made the biggest mistake ever by leaving them?
      Yes. Yes I had.
      I knew Silver Sky could take care of Comet, that was why I had left. Well, not exactly, but it helped with my choice. My terrible choice of leaving them helpless- wait no, they're fine- was making me depressed.
      I padded across the forest floor, paws crunching on pine needles. My heart beat faster with every step, and soon I could feel an ominous presence.
I see that you're doing well. Well for a crazy, depressed, weak cat, anyways. . . . How are you still alive again, I didn't hear that.
      Of course it was him! Him, as in my most best friend in the whole wide world! I'm so excited. As the voice continued I blocked him out- sort of anyway.
Why are you ignoring me? I'm too important and special to ignore! I simply rolled my eyes at this weird cat, but he would not give up. Hey! Don't you dare roll your eyes at me! That's rude!
      Well he's one to talk.
The comets are getting closer. You may want to listen.
      I heard him and I listened, but I pretended not too.
They are only a few moons away. You need to get home. You need to help your family! Prepare.
~~~~~~**********~~~~~~
      That voice had made me realise just how badly I missed my family and I had started running back. It took a day of running with hardly any rest before I got there.
      I entered the rocky cleft where I had slept with Comet and Silver Sky. The place where my Mother had died. I sniffed, and to my relief there scent was fresh on the mossy beds.
      They probably wouldn't be back for a while, so I decided to lay down on Silver Sky's bed and rest my tired body. My eyes immediately shut and I dozed off.
~~~~~~**********~~~~~~
      "Twiggy!" A shrill squeal filled the air around my ears. I groggily looked up, my vision blurry.
      Two shapes outlined against the sunset. Comet and Silver Sky! They were coming closer and Comet kept calling out my name. Silver Sky looked to surprised to anything at all.
      Comet continued to bound forward happily until she reached me and she licked the top of my head. "Twiggy, brother, where have you been?" She managed to gasp out between licks.
      I just shook my head. I had no clue how to respond. Anyways I had only been gone for a few days. How could they be so worried already?
      "I've only been gone for a few days," I muttered my thoughts aloud.
      My mate suddenly burst in. "But Twiggy! You didn't tell us where you were going not why or anything!"
      "I'm sorry." Suddenly I remembered about the comets. "Guys it's not okay, the comets are going to get here soon!"
      Comet's tufty ears twitched. "Are you sure? You don't look too well. . . . Maybe you're seeing things?"
      I was quick to deny that. "No! I'm not! I've been having dreams where my voice inside hurts me! I've woken up with gashes in my stomach!" I twisted over and showed them the slowly healing cut on my side.
      "Are you sure you didn't just trip over a branch or something?" Silver Sky asked.
      "Yes! I'm sure! I wouldn't be so worried if that was the case!"
      Silver Sky shook her head again. "I think you're losing your mind, Twiggy."
      "Yes, but only because of that stupid voice in my head that is hurting me and-" I stopped talking to take a breath. "Guess what? If you guys don't want to listen to me, you'll just get hurt by the comets and I can't help because you won't listen!"
      "Stop talking like that," Silver Sky instructed. "You're running out of breath."
I don't care I don't care I don't care I don't care! As much as I told myself this, I really did care and I probably dos sound like a kit throwing a tantrum. Maybe I should stop.
      Suddenly a light began approaching in the distance. It was a comet.
