Letter XXVII
My prom is wherever you are ~ unknown
Dear Dylan,
I wasn't looking forward to prom anymore. Now that the finals are over, and we officially made it out in one piece, I just want to get on a plane and leave. But when you came, a rose in hand with a bag full of my favorite chocolate bars and gummy bears, asking me to be your prom date, how could I say no?
I was waiting for you to pick me up, bracing myself for every way this night could turn into a disaster. I had chosen an emerald green dress -my favorite color- and I kept wondering if you'll like it despite complaining that prom didn't matter to me. In fact, that is true, it's you that matters to me.
When I heard the doorbell, I rushed to open it, the butterflies in my tummy growing wild. You looked devilishly handsome in a suit, your hair in its usual messy style.
"You look absolutely gorgeous" you broke the silence, making me blush when you took my hand and left a lingering kiss on the back of it. That's when I noticed your emerald tie.
Pointing at it, I asked "How did you know?"
You grinned childishly and said "it's your favorite color."
So I looked up into your eyes and whispered "it is".
Hooking your arm with mine, you started guiding me to your car, even going as far as opening the passenger door for me. Under normal circumstances, I would have made fun of you, but the intensity of it all kept me quiet, the sound of my heart beating silencing my jumbled thoughts. When you got in, you reached for a small dark scarf. Raising an eyebrow curiously, I asked "what are you doing with that?"
"That, my dear Cheryl, is a blindfold. I have a surprise for you" you answered, a mischievous tone to your words.
"Dylan..." I started unsure, but you interrupted me.
"Just trust me" and that immediately silenced me. With my sight temporarily gone, I settled uncomfortably into the seat as you started driving. It could have been mere minutes when the engine turned off and I heard you get out of the car. Then, I felt my door open up, a cold breeze sneaking in, your warm hand taking mine to lead me to an unknown destination. The path underneath me felt like grass, the sound of music filling the air.
We skidded to a halt, and then I was bombarded with a beautiful sight as you took off the blindfold. We were at the park, lights and cute decorations hanging around, a table full of food and drinks, and there stood the gang: Kayla wore a short red dress, while Steve and Blake had black suits on.
I gasped in surprise "What are you guys doing here?"
Steve chuckled, pointing at us "You didn't think that we'd miss our bestfriends' prom"
Blake added "it was Dylan's idea though; he knew you didn't want to go to prom."
Turning around to look at you, you asked in a small hopeful voice "Do you like it?"
"I love it! Thank you so much Dylan" I answered, pecking you lightly on the lips, my heart soaring from happiness, and yet in sadness to what I was about to do tomorrow.
"Great, now let's get this party started" yelled Kayla, as she turned the music up, ushering me to what looked like a makeshift dancefloor.
It had been long since I enjoyed myself this much; we spent the night dancing, eating, playing party games and singing off tune.
As you were the designated driver, at the end of the night, we all stumbled in your car. My house was the closest so you dropped me off first. Saying goodnight to the three in the back, I stepped out knowing you'd follow me. And you did.
When we reached my door, I hugged you, enjoying the safety and comfort of your arms around me "Thank you again, I had so much fun."
You answered by putting your lips on mine, the taste of your kiss almost intoxicating. When we both broke for air, I said "No matter what happens, never doubt my love. There's no one for me but you."
I saw the happy glint in your eyes turn into a suspicious one, as you asked "why the hell does that sound like goodbye?"
"It's not" I smiled painfully, glancing backwards at the gang, and seeing the understanding look on their faces. I knew that I had to tell you, but I didn't want to ruin our last night for a while together, or maybe I was just too much of a coward.
I walked in hastily into the house and closed the door behind me. I heard your car drive off into the night and relaxed slightly. Looking at my bags on the foot of the staircase, I thought that even though I didn't tell you the whole truth, I didn't lie either.
It wasn't goodbye.
Sincerely yours,
Cheryl
You guys, only one letter left :)
