I wrapped both hands around the mug of coffee, sliding lower in my seat to avoid the gaze of the boy two tables away.
"Please don't look over here," I repeatedly muttered under my breath. I brought the mug to my lips, savouring the warm liquid.
The boy chuckled, arching an eyebrow. It seemed like I had spoken louder than I thought. My eyes widened slightly when he slowly got out of his booth and made his way over to me.
I panicked, looking for an escape route, but I had yet to pay the bill. He slipped into the red booth and smiled brightly at me.
Oh no, what should I do? It's one thing to look at the guy, a whole other thing to talk to him!
"Well, well, well, if it isn't the little Tweety Bird," the boy said. "What's a girl like you doing in a fine place like this?"
"It's surprising seeing you here as well. I thought you would have your tongue shoved down some girl's throat at this point," I said smoothly, surprised that I was suddenly so confident.
The brunette before me tensed before he eased back into his seat. "Low blow, Diaz. I admit that particular incident wasn't one of my finest moments, but it's been 6 months since then," the boy said.
"It's not like you've changed much since then. In fact, I think that's the same jacket," I scoffed, fiddling with my fingers under the table.
"What, this jacket?" The boy fiddled with the leather collar. "You gave this jacket to me."
"Maybe I want it back."
"Well you're not getting it back. It was a gift, and you can't take gifts back. No matter how much you might hate the recipient."
"Ha, at least you know I hate you. What're you doing back in Issaquah?" I asked, biting my pinkie nail.
"Would you believe - looking for you?" He leaned forward, suddenly intense. "There's something you need to know."
I leaned forward as well. I narrowed my eyes. "Are you pregnant?"
The brunette sighed and ran his fingers over his face before leaning back onto his elbows.
"I'm going on a trip. And I need company," he said simply.
My mouth fell open. "Cool - why should I care? Would you like me to recommend some people to take with you?"
"Olivia, we used to be best friends. Please?" he said, widening his eyes.
"That was before you made out with Valerie and then dumped her the next day," I scowled.
"Dammit, Diaz!" The boy slammed his fists on the table. "I don't know why I try so hard for you!"
I winced a bit and his expression softened a little.
"Max is getting married. My parents want me to visit for the wedding," he explained.
The relationship between him and his family was crazy.
"You still haven't given me a reason as to why you're telling me all this," I said, taking a sip of my drink. It was cold.
"You're the only person I trust. You know how controlling my parents are. Please. I'll - I'll make it up to you somehow," he pleaded.
The ice around my heart melted a little as I placed my mug back on the table. "Still waiting for a question, Jordan... if you are asking me something."
"Alright, alright. Olivia, will you please do me the honour of accompanying me on this journey from Seattle to California for my big brother's wedding?" Jordan said in a posh voice, giving me a small grin.
"Of course I will," I said, cheerfully hitting him on the shoulder. "Why didn't you ask that in the first place?"
"You really made me work for that," he sighed, running his fingers through his hair. "I'll buy you some pie," he smiled, calling over the waitress.
"It better be apple cinnamon," I muttered under my breath. "So when do we leave?"
"Once you finish your oddly specific pie," he replied, checking out the waitress as she left our table. I whacked him on the arm and he burst out laughing.
My eyes bulged out of my head. "Are you crazy?! We can't leave after I eat! I need to pack, I need to tell my dad I'm leaving, I need to... do nothing else after that..."
Jordan chuckled again as he nodded at the waitress who placed the pie on the table. "Fine, we'll tell Mr. Diaz that you're leaving and then you grab your stuff and we blast on outta here," he said, almost bouncing in his seat.
"You have plane tickets already? That was fast... wait a second." I glanced at him suspiciously. "How did you know I would go with you?"
"Uhh... well," he started as I raised my eyebrow.
"'Uh well' what?" I snapped at him.
"We're not going by plane," he winced.
"Then how are we getting there...?" I narrowed my eyes.
"By car," he said, wincing further.
"We're taking Lucinda?" I screeched, my memories going back to the old beaten up pickup truck.
"Hey she's not that bad anymore," Jordan protested. "I made a few upgrades and gave her a paint job and she's good as new!"
"Okay fine," I grumbled.
"And you're the one that named her. We had some good memories with that car," he said, tilting his head slightly to the side.
"Remember that time when you got really drunk and ruined my favourite dress, and I slashed your tires?" I said, chuckling.
"Ooh yeah. The senior graduation party was a night to remember. But that still cost me a fortune. My dad almost kicked me outta the house," he explained, dropping a ten dollar bill on the table before standing up.
"Wait!" I yelled, trying to get the last pieces of pie into my mouth.
I finished and looked at him. "Okay, let's go."
And with that, we both exited the little diner, ready to start our journey.
