CHAPTER SEVEN

Beautiful evergreen pastures stretched for as far as the eye could see. It was peaceful, and quiet except for the melodious chirping of birds in the trees. Paige took a deep breath and sighed. Crisp, clean air and the fresh scent of daisies and roses were things she would miss when they returned to London.

Across the road, there was a farmer feeding his chickens some corn. Behind his barn, a farmhand was leading a horse into a stable. It shook its head proudly, and its black mane flapped in the wind as it trotted beside him.

She looked around at the scenic countryside. It was undeniably lovely but she frowned nevertheless. Taking a glance at Brian as he stood beside her she bristled. 'I can not believe that Brian told me to meet him in two hours for this,' she thought. With a casual sneak peek at him, her eyes wandered from his clothes to his hair. She liked his haircut. His dirty blonde hair looked messy, but in a fashionable way.

It was much better than the extra long, unkept look he had previously. The only person who that looked good on was Harry Styles.

That being said, it did not change the current situation. She freshened up quickly and met him downstairs. Punctually. He nodded and said nothing. She internally scolded herself for being disappointed. For anticipating more. To top it all off, was the fact that they were standing like Buckingham Palace guards, in front of Old Shepherd's Inn. 'Has this man gone bananas?' she wondered.

Paige put her hands on her hips and gasped unable to conceal her thoughts any longer. "Wow. Just, wow. You really outdid yourself. This is amazing. You are the mothertrucking O.G."

"Language, Paige," Brian said sternly.

"Wow. Just, wow. You really outdid yourself. This is amazing. You are the mothertrucking O.G...Sir," she added.

Brian huffed and shook his head. He could not believe how impatient Paige was being. After all, they had just gotten to the hills in front of Old Shepherd's Inn. Standing for ten minutes should not have been a big deal. She had not seen anything yet.

"I have a confession to make," Paige said with mock seriousness. "When you told me to get go freshen up and come back in two hours, I assumed you had something exciting up your sleeve. You know, picnic in the meadow or some other activities."

Brian rubbed his temples and summoned strength to deal with Paige. She was more than a handful, even on her good days. How much more when she brought out her claws like a kitten. He clenched his jaw to prevent saying something he would probably regret.

"Paige, look-"

"I am out here in a pink, floral dress and cute white sandals. You are wearing blue jeans and a white polo shirt. Just to stare at some hills."

"Would you-"

"I was tired. Sorry, I am tired. After spending hours picking flowers and preserving petals for fresh and dried sample analysis. I would -"

In one swift move, Paige stepped in front of Brian and looked up at his face. Her fiery chestnut eyes burned into his. "-have looked at the hills from my room," she concluded icily.

Brian tilted his head lower to meet her gaze. His eyes drifted slowly from her big curls, to her smooth, caramel skin. Eventually, they settled on her full, rosy lips. The fragrance of her rose scented perfume teased him. He had a moment of enlightenment and smirked.

"What exactly is bothering you, Paige?" he asked in a husky voice, as he put his hands in his pockets and shrugged. He took another step closer. "Is it how boring this place is, or that you wanted more?"

Paige stifled an eye roll. Refusing to acknowledge the stubble on his jaw, and his pine aftershave. She fluffed her hair and crossed her arms. All the while she held his icy blue gaze. "Both. No, I mean -"

Brian raised his eyebrows and his eyes twinkled with amusement. He could not decided which was cuter. Bold and daring Paige or the flustered and stammering one.

A brown vintage, convertible car crunched to a halt behind them. The driver waved, but when he saw Brian and his friend having a moment, he stepped out and walked towards them. Stopping at reasonable distance, and fiddling with his glasses awkwardly.

Paige got on tip toes and laid a hand on Brian's shoulder. His breath hitched and he closed his eyes.

"I think that man wants to see you," she whispered. Brushing her cheek against his stubble gently.

Brian's eyes flew open and he was greeted with the cheekiest smirk he had ever seen on Paige's beautiful face. He could not suppress the smile that tugged at his lips too.

"Um, excuse me?" the man asked. "Should I come back at a better time? Perhaps I should pop in to see Bill down the road and come back later."

Brian held her hand and led her towards him as he responded. "That will not be necessary, Henry. Henry, meet Paige, the student I am supervising. Paige, meet Henry. My friend, and our driver for today. He was a race car driver in the sixties, and can never resist a chance to get behind the wheel." Brian chuckled.

"Nice to meet you, sir," Paige said warmly.

"Please, call me Henry. You being formal reminds me what an old git I've become," he said playfully. "Can't say I am not happy to be retired through." He removed his cap and smoothened his white hair. He had good posture and the years had been clearly kind to him. Paige did not realise how old he was until he came closer.

They all laughed as they walked towards the vehicle. Brian and Henry fell into a cheerful banter about his quiet life in the countryside. Paige tugged on Brian's arm discretely as Henry led the way to the car. "Where are we going?" she inquired.

"To see the White Cliffs of Dover," he replied. "Guess you were wrong about me not having something up my sleeve."

Brian opened the car door for Paige and she stepped in. He jogged round the vehicle and sat in the backseat with her.

"Shall we?" Henry asked.

"Absolutely," Brian replied.
