THEORY TEN

This Theory is about the 10 biggest questions from the season 4 teaser trailer

Found this on the internet and mix it with my own.

---

Season 4 will bring the unconventional superhero series to a close, and it has quite a bit to wrap up. Season 3 saw the Hargreeves siblings cause a massive time travel paradox that ultimately destroyed the universe, but Allison chose to reset it. They then found themselves in a new timeline, where their adoptive father, Reginald Hargreeves, was running some kind of business empire with his deceased alien wife, Abigail, now alive and well. The siblings had also lost their powers, but as per the Season 4 teaser, that doesn't mean the Hargreeves family is done trying to save the world.

In Season 4 teaser trailer, the siblings have gone their separate ways but are brought back together for one final mission. Although it solves a few mysteries from last season and the Season 4 posters, it also raises plenty more questions about what to expect in the final season. Here are some of the most pressing questions about the Season 4 teaser trailer.

---

HOW MUCH TIME HAS PASSED SINCE SEASON 3?

The Hargreeves siblings were scattered across time at the beginning of Season 2, leading to some being stranded in 1960s Dallas for years and others only for months before reuniting with their family.

Season 3 picked up right where the last season left off.

Season 4 teaser opens with a quick montage of the siblings appearing to live normal lives after going their separate ways in the Season 3 finale. It seems they've had some time to figure out who they are without their powers, but exactly how much time has passed isn't clear.

When it comes to answering this question, the most telling indicators are the Hargreeves siblings' children. Allison's daughter Claire, only appears briefly in the trailer, so it's difficult to tell how much she's grown. However, Season 3 also had Lila reveal she was pregnant with Diego's child. The Season 4 trailer shows Diego at a child's birthday partying with a little girl, presumably their daughter, who's already big enough to hit a pinata, suggesting a few years may have elapsed. I would say six or five years.

WHY IS BEN HARGREEVES IN JAIL?

Ben Hargreeves spent the first two seasons as a ghost that only Klaus could see.

Season 3 introduced an alternate Ben who was raised in the Sparrow Academy; he was the only Sparrow to make it to the new timeline.

The first poster released for season 4 was an umbrella-shaped subway map with multiple undated events, including one that read, "Ben released." The teaser trailer appears to have addressed part of this mysterious event, as it shows Ben coming out of a prison-like facility looking a little worse for wear. At the same time, it doesn't give any indication of what sort of trouble Ben has gotten himself into.

Throughout this trailer, Ben doesn't seem to be in the best place mentally. In the van, he screams, "Let's go kill this bitch!" and looks dejected when Allison reminds him that it's a rescue mission. Later, he appears to get into a fight with Viktor, and the trailer ends with him using his tentacles to toss a man through the air. This certainly seems to support the theory that the well-dressed Ben who appeared in Season 3's post-credits scene is a doppelganger from the new timeline.

WHO IS THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY TRYING TO RESCUE?

In Season 1, the Umbrella Academy was brought back together by their father's death.

In Season 2, Five reunited his siblings to prevent an apocalypse in 1963.

Season 3 saw the Umbrella Academy ally with the Sparrow Academy to try to stop the Kugelblitz.

As previously mentioned, the Hargreeves siblings reunite for a mission in Season 4 trailer. Although most of them aren't very enthusiastic about it, Diego can barely contain his excitement about the family's first mission together in a long time, and Luther takes the opportunity to snap a family photo. Allison also says that it's a rescue mission, but who they're going to rescue and why remains a mystery.

All of the known living siblings are in the van for the mission, so the Hargreeves don't appear to be rescuing one of their own. They do, however, have other loved ones, like their children and potentially romantic partners. If Ben does have a doppelganger somewhere, perhaps he'll get captured, prompting the siblings to go save him. Whoever it is, they must be quite important to get all of the Hargreeves to leave their new lives and band together.

Therefore I think it might be Sloane.

WHO ARE THE THIBEDEAUS?

The Thibedeaus join the long-established tradition of dance sequences in The Umbrella Academy.

When watching the teaser, we catch a brief glimpse of a couple in matching outfits dancing in a room decorated with colorful lights. This appears to be Dr. Gene and Dr. Jean Thibedeau, who will be portrayed by Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally, respectively. The two were also featured in a sneak peek of the script for Season 4's first episode. In the scene, they attempt to purchase one of Allison's movies, which might be leftover from a past timeline.

Even when taking all of this into account, it leaves me questioning who the Thibedeaus are and how they fit into the season. The official synopsis for season 4 also mentions a "mysterious association known as The Keepers," who "(believe) the reality they're living in is a lie and a great reckoning is coming." Gene and Jean might seem like silly eccentrics, but they could be part of something much more sinister.

DOES SEASON FOUR FEATURE A NEW APOCALYPSE?

Season 1 and 2 had the siblings trying to prevent an apocalypse caused by Viktor.

In Season 3, the Hargreeves' time-traveling accidentally created a paradox that destroyed the universe before Allison reset everything.

In one notable shot from Season 4 teaser, Five and Lila are shown coming out of a subway station and onto a city street that looks like it came straight out of Season 1's post-apocalyptic future. We can't help but wonder if this is somehow the same apocalypse where Five got stuck or if it's a new one for the final timeline. Given how much the show plays with timelines and world-ending events, either option is possible.

The subway station feels especially significant, given the subway map motif that's been featured throughout Season 4's marketing. My theory is that this subway could somehow allow the siblings to travel through time, which would align with the stops from the first poster being dates of certain events. Considering how similar the scene is to Season 1's apocalypse, perhaps it could even allow them to revisit old timelines.

WHAT'S WITH ALL THE ARMED CIVILIANS?

The Academy members are rarely shown using guns, usually preferring to use their powers in conjunction with their hand-to-hand combat training.

Exceptions include Klaus's experience in the Vietnam War and Five's years as a Commission assassin.

The teaser mainly focuses on the Umbrella Academy members, but the few shots of other characters share an odd connection. Namely, there are multiple shots of various people with guns. First, a crew of fast-food workers is shown taking firearms out from behind a counter. Second, a man dressed as Santa Claus runs through the street firing two guns. Third, Sir Reginald Hargreeves himself takes up arms as he confronts a shadowy figure.

In previous seasons, armed assailants usually turned out to be working for the Commission. With the Commission now gone, perhaps some other sinister group, such as the aforementioned Keepers, has risen to take its place. It's also interesting that Reginald has a weapon since he didn't need one when he confronted the Majestic 12 in Season 2 or when he killed Luther in Season 3. Maybe he was reset as a human instead of an alien in this timeline.

WHY IS LILA CRYING?

In season 2 Lila was introduced as an undercover Commission agent and the Handler's adopted daughter before being revealed as one of the other babies mysteriously born on October 1, 1989.

Season 4's character posters revealed Lila's surname changed from Pitts to Hargreeves, suggesting she and Diego are now married.

While the Hargreeves siblings all have moments of frustration and turmoil throughout Season 4 teaser, one in particular has caught my attention. The brief shot shows Lila crying as Five comforts her. Five isn't one to show physical affection toward his family, and considering how tumultuous their relationship has been in the past, with him and Lila trying to kill each other several times, the fact that he's here for her now stands out even more.

Lila is especially broken up in this shot, leaving me scared to find out the reason behind her crying. Since she and Diego are now married with a child, something terrible happening to either of them makes for an appropriate guess. That said, it might not be as devastating as it seems. With so many scenes of Lila and Five alone in the subway, it's also possible they just got temporarily separated from the rest of the family.

IS REGINALD HARGREEVES AN ALLY OR AN ENEMY?

Reginald Hargreeves is secretly an alien who came to Earth after the death of his wife, Abigail

Before the universe was reset, Reginald stored Abigail's body in a secret facility on the moon.

Sir Reginald Hargreeves has been a divisive figure throughout his adopted children's lives, often being cold and cruel as he trained them to save the world. The siblings were nearly united against him in Season 3, and I likely expected him to become the main villain of Season 4. However, the trailer shows Reginald plugging Diego and Allison into some sort of machine, and they don't appear to be resisting, leaving me wondering if they could be working together. And this is actually Reginald giving them their powers back.

Throughout the show, Reginald has always had a bigger plan regarding his adopted kids and is always steering them toward his goal without telling them more. That could certainly still be the case in Season 4, and as much as they resent him, Reginald has a way of getting some siblings on his side in crucial moments. It's unclear what he wants now that he has his wife back, but he is always up to something.

HOW WILL THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY GET THEIR POWERS BACK?

Each of the 43 children born on October 1, 1989, has special abilities linked to a mysterious alien energy called marigold, which looks like orbs of golden light.

Viktor accidentally transferred some of his marigold to Harlan Cooper, but Harlan had trouble controlling his newfound abilities which result him killing 27 women in 1989, including the Umbrella siblings' mothers before they were born which created the Kugelblitz.

When Allison reset the universe at the end of Season 3, the Hargreeves siblings were left physically healed but powerless. Although I suspected that they would get their powers back in Season 4, the teaser trailer confirms it, but there are subtle differences. Namely, Five's powers now have a purple glow instead of a blue one, Viktor's powers look fiery instead of sound-based, and Ben's tentacles are coming out of his back instead of his stomach.

I'm already speculating that the family's restored powers could be a result of Reginald's mysterious machine. While some of the siblings seem content in their new lives, others might be feeling lost without their powers and could go to their estranged father for help. After all, he's probably the only being who knows where their powers came from. The changes to their abilities could be a side effect of the new universe.

WHERE ARE RAYMOND CHESTNUT AND SLOANE HARGREEVES?

Raymond "Ray" Chestnut first appeared in Season 2, Episode 1 and was married to Allison for almost a year.

Sloane Hargreeves made her debut in Season 3, Episode 1 and quickly hit it off with Luther.

Season 3 ended with a couple of major surprises. First, Allison not only got her daughter Claire back but also her husband from the 1960s Raymond Chestnut. Second, even though she was with them at the Hotel Oblivion, the Sparrow Academy's Sloane Hargreeves, new wife to Luther, was nowhere to be seen in the new universe. Interestingly, neither character appears in the Season 4 teaser trailer.

With this being the final season, it'd be strange if the show didn't address Sloane's disappearance at all. Assuming Reginald and Allison didn't write her out of existence in the new universe, maybe she was captured by The Keepers or another group. As for Ray, it makes a bit more sense that he wouldn't appear in a trailer that focuses more on the siblings. He doesn't have powers, so Ray could just be staying home with Claire while Allison is away.
