Connor: Small Talk
I closed my eye shields and I soon felt sleep coming. Maggie was sleeping some meters away from me. I could hear the sea outside the window. The moonlight was giving the room an extraordinary atmosphere. Everything was peaceful.
That until the earth shook
My eyes shot open. Panic instantly took control of me. I jumped out of the bed, taking the covers with me. I looked around the room scared. Everything was om its place, except some book, which fell from a shelve on the wall. I let out the breath I was holding.
I looked over at Maggie. She was still asleep under the covers. She had always the best sense of danger, so I guessed the earthquake wasn't big, as it didn't wake her.
I sighed in relief. What is going on with you earth? I thought. There was light in the room. I took my phone from the bedside table, my heart still racing. 7am. I knew it would be impossible to sleep again, and the party was in a couple of hours. Then we would leave. I sighed again.
I quickly dressed into a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt. I tried to be as silent as possible, not wanting to wake up Maggie. I unlocked and stepped out of the door.
I made my way to the elevator. As I was read to get in, when I changed my mind. I was too scared to do that. If it hadn't already stopped working, it might at any moment.
I took the stairs. It was a long way to the ground floor, but my need for air was big.
When I reached the lobby, my heart was pounding. There was much light in the well decorated room, but no one in the reception. I turned and started walking in a fast pace. I quickly made my way to the back door, which led to the gardens.
The night was cool, with no wind. I walked outside of the building. There was a path which led to the main gardens. There were plants everywhere. Mostly palm trees and hydrangeas. They made a nice combination. The path was made of stone. Small lights were placed at its side of it.
I passed small houses and pools. Their turquoise color extraordinary in the night. I made my way the beach. There were some wooden benches placed on the sand, some meters away from the sea, which was now peaceful.
The trees prevented me from the benches. Then I spotted one, to my left. I sat down slowly and inhaled. Finally, I thought, fresh air.
I watched the sea. It was peaceful. It was now around 8 now. The sun was up in the sky, but the birds wasn't singing for some reason. I stared at the view for some time, until I heard somebody sitting down next to me on the bench. I didn't even turn my head. I already knew.
"The earthquake woke you up too, huh?" Logan asked me, while looking at the infinite blue sea in front of us. I signed tired. Why did he have to be everywhere?
"Yes, it did. Now, tell me, are the rest of the benches invisible to you?" I asked angrily. I was bored of him following me around. It was tiring.
He laughed and turned his head to me. His brown hair messed from sleep. He was truly getting on my nerves.
"No, I see them. I just wanna talk to you. I missed you" He whispered near my ear. I felt shivers running down my spine. I used him away and tried to get up. Yes, tried, because while I was getting up, he grabbed my hand and pulled me down again.
"Jeez, what's wrong with you?" I told him anger boiling inside me. I made another attempt to leave, but his grip on my wrist tightened.
"I'm sorry, ok? Please sit down" H sounded tired, like he was talking to a child. That made me even more frustrated. I just sat down, pulled away my arm, and looked at him.
"Can you just leave me alone? I want some peace!" I glared at him. What I said was the truth. I needed some time alone. I was leaving in a few hours, just after the party. I didn't want to waste my time with a morron.
"Look, Connor, I didn't mean to offend you or annoy you ok? There was a bet I made with my friend. Nothing more, don't take it personally" He said, and he sounded sad. I didn't care.
Still, I couldn't deny that my heart skipped a beat when he said that. So, he didn't really like me. Nothing unusual though. Why would he? He was handsome. I was sure he could have every girl and boy he wanted. I turned my gaze to the ground.
I knew I should feel anger. They thought I would be an easy target. Fall for him instantly. Idiots, I thought. But then I realized. They weren't that stupid. Because they may be right, and I have fall for him. I cursed myself for thinking that way.
I suddenly realized tears were ready to fall from my eyes. Why? I don't care. I whipped them away and turned to him.
"You won't need to worry about it for much longer. I'm leaving today. Sorry that you lost your stupid bet" I said expressionless. I still couldn't get mad at him. I wish I could, but I just felt sad.
His eyes widened. I opened his mouth to say something but closed it again. He faced away from me. I must had startled him. Good, I thought. But his next words startled me.
"You don't have to leave. You, y-you could stay with me. My father is the owner, you'll have the best suite" I was left with my mouth open and my eyebrows raised.
He wanted me to stay? Why? I didn't understand. He had just said he didn't really like me. Then he didn't want me to leave.
My eyes were stuck at the sea. I suddenly heard a sound. A small buzz reached my ears.I couldn't understand what it was or where i came from. It was strange, but I ignored it. We stayed silent for some time. Him waiting for my answer.
"I am really happy with the fact that I won't see you again" I said in a quiet voice. It was true. I grew tired. He thought it was something like a game; playing with somebody's feelings. When, it wasn't.
I caught his stare. His eyes were now sad. Fake, I thought. He made a grimace like he knew what I was thinking.
"Don't be like that. I just...um. Oh, come on! God..." I said while rubbing his temples. I frowned. It was clear he was trying to say something but couldn't. I again didn't care that much. I kept saying that to myself.
"You know something? Don't bother" I got up quickly, not giving him enough time to react. I started walking away from him.
"Wait! We'll talk later ok?" I heard him saying behind me. Whatever you say. I just kept walking. My mouth a thin line and my hands on my pockets.
It wouldn't happen. I was certain about that
