Connor: Morning surprises

"Bangkok is indeed a beautiful place,  isn't it? " Maggie asked and I nodded my head in agreement after I had sat down next her.

I put my breakfast on the table. Bacon and omelette. I was starving.  Like always.

The day before , in the evening, we had visited Bangkok,  Thailand's capital.  It was amazing. Full of smells and colors. We went to a big temple, then a museum and a restaurant. We had a really good time. Well,  that until the earthquake hit.

Fortunately,  it wasn't a big one.  But still,  it scared us to hell. We were in the restaurant when it happened. Everyone panicked. We left the place instantly,  taking a taxi and returning to the hotel.

Our parents called us one hour later,  after Maggie text them. They were really worried,  and only talked to her,  while we were heading back.

"So,  how is the food?" She asked happily,  while eating her cereal.

We had just sat at the resort's dining room.  A big room,  with dozens of fancy tables and chairs, big windows, who faced the gardens,a and a small fountain close to the door. There was a buffet in the corner.

"It's fine" I said and took a bite from the omelette.  It was fine.

"So,  um,  Connor, " She started. I looked at her. She was playing with the spoon. I frowned. I knew It wasn't going to be something good.  Maggie never called me with my full name.

It could be anything. From something bad to something good. important or simple. I could feel the shivers running down my spine.

"Dad called me" she said quickly.  I should have imagined.  It wasn't a surprise.  Mum and dad were always worried when it came to our safety.

"Yeah,  so what? " I asked.  She seemed nervous enough to make me sweat.

"He..." She first hesitated,  but continued "He wants us to go home.  He finds the place to dangerous for us to stay. They both do" she took a deep breath and kept talking "And they're right Conn,  two earthquakes in Bangkok,  and one in Saigon. And more are expected" She said,  trying to make it easier for me.  But I new it was hard enough for her.

She had been gathering money for months. And now they were wasted. I still hadn't said anything. I turned my gaze to one of the windows across the room.

"I now you have been waiting for months , me too. But it's dangerous. And don't worry,  dad said that they'll return home as well. We'll go somewhere else on holidays!" She exclaimed happily. But I knew that she didn't really mean it.

Our parents didn't have enough money for another vacation. While we went to Bangkok,  they decided to visit Dubai for a few days,  to take a break.  It was close to our hose,  in Abu-Dhabi.

"You know that they won't give you back the money right?" I said without looking at her.  Of course she does,  I thought,  we had searched back at home about the resort's policy.

It wasn't about the money.  I had been waiting months for that vacation.  It meant much for both of us. And we had only stayed two days.  But I understood. It was dangerous. We wouldn't want to risk it.

"I know.  But please Connor,  don't make it worst" she Sighed,  while rubbing her temples.

"When are we leaving? " I asked,  my voice steady.  I was sad, yes,  but I loved her too much to hurt her.

I remember that she had always prepared me when something happened. Always been on my side. Maggie had supported me when I had had cancer in my left lug, some years before. When I had broken my leg while we we're playing on the park. When I came out to my parents.

Maggie was my sister,  yes,  but she had always also been my best friend.

"I don't know Conn,  maybe after the beach party,  tomorrow.  We wouldn't wanna lose that,  now would we? " She shot me a smile,  trying to sell positive.  I smiled back.

"You're right. How do you know about the beach party anyway? " I was told by a guy around my age,  who worked on the bar. He said it would be awesome.

"I saw a poster,  outside the door of the spa.  And yes,  I went to the spa! " she said and laughed.

I looked down in my plate.  My appetite was gone.  But at least we would go to the party, right?

"Okay then" I signed "I understand. We will leave tomorrow. "

If nothing else happens,  I thought bitterly.
