Months after defeating Anarky, Tokoyami returned to Gotham. In the months that followed, Tokoyami fought alongside the Teen Titans on various missions. He grew fondness with his teammates, but he grew a deeper bond with Raven. At Titans Tower, Raven was staring at her clock as she laid in her bed.

Raven: Six more hours. Six more hours and it'll be over.

Just as Raven says that, a knock was heard on her door, startling her. 

Raven: Hello?

Raven walked up to her door to find no one there. She then investigates the tower for any sign of a potential intruder. When she reaches the main operations room, the lights suddenly turned on, revealling a surprise party set up by the other Titans.

Titans: SURPRISE! 

Raven screams as she teleports away. Immediately, the other Titans begin to rethink their approach.

Cyborg: Uh Raven?

Artemis: I think we went overboard with this.

Starfire: It is only us, your friends! With warm wishes on the day of your birth! 

Robin: I told you a surprise party was a bad idea.

Tokoyami: I agree. You should've listened to me. 

As they begin to look for Raven, she teleports behind Beast Boy, scaring him. Her look was that of confusion and annoyance.

Raven: How did you know it was my birthday?

Beast Boy: Um....remember last night how you made that big deal about tomorrow? Well we started wondering about what tomorrow was so we did some snooping!

As Beast Boy said that, the other Titans began to stare Beast Boy down. As he lets out a nervous laugh, Tokoyami took over.

Tokoyami: I tried to tell them that a surprise party was a bad idea, but they didn't listen to me. Robin felt the same, but we went along it. 

Raven: And we've been preparing your celebration ever since! 

Beast Boy: We put up tons of decorations! 

Artemis: Cyborg and I made the cake! 

Raven lets out a sigh. Robin and Tokoyami quickly notices the look of discomfort on her face.

Robin: I hope this is okay. We.....

Raven:No! It's not! Look....I really appreciate what you're trying to do here. But I'm not interested. 

As Raven begins to walk away, the other Titans with the exception of Tokoyami and Robin attempt to convince Raven to celebrate her birthday, but she says no. Eventaully, she's pushed to the point of using her powers to destroy the decorations and the party set up. She walks away back to her room, leaving the other Titans confused. 

Beast Boy: I told you a surprise party was a bad idea.

Artemis: Give it a rest!

Tokoyami: I'm going to talk to her.

Robin: Are you sure? It looks like she isn't the mood to talk to anyone. 

Tokoyami: I'm sure. She'll be more likely to talk to me more than anyone. I'll be fine. 

After saying that, Tokoyami then walks to Raven's door and knocks on it. He hears no response. He knocks again to get on.

Raven: Go away!

Tokoyami: It's me Raven!

Raven: I told you I'm not interested!

Tokoyami: It's not about that! I just want to talk to you! Please.....

After a moment of uneasy silence, Raven opens the door and lets Tokoyami in. He enters and sits next to Raven.

Tokoyami: What's wrong Raven?

Raven: I just don't like parties.

Tokoyami: You're not fooling me. I know it's more than that.

Raven: And how do you know?

Tokoyami: Because I felt the same way. You're carrying some kind of burden. I want to talk to you about it. What's wrong with your birthday?

Raven: I don't want to talk about it! You wouldn't understand!

Tokoyami: Then make me understand! Please.

Raven: No!

Tokoyami knew that getting Raven to open up wasn't going to be easy. He understands all too well about the position Raven was in. So he decided to gamble. 

Tokoyami: If.....if I tell you about my past, will you tell me about yours? 

Hearing that caught Raven off guard. She knew Tokoyami kept his past a closely guarded secret. Even back when the Titans first got together, he kept it a secret.

Tokoyami: Do not worry. The others don't have to know. It will stay between us. I promise. 

Raven let out a sigh and accepted. Tokoyami prepared himself to relive his past trauma. 

Tokoyami: Do you remember what happened back at Scarecrow's compound?

Raven: When you lost control of Dark Shadow? Yes. 

Tokoyami: When I was at UA, we were in a Summer Training Camp to train our Quirks. One night, we were attacked by villains. I was with a good friend when the villain Moonfish attacked. He attacked my friend and injured him. When I witnessed this, I.....I was overcome with great anger and grief that I lost control of Dark Shadow. It got to the point where Dark Shadow took complete control of my body and went on a rampage.

Raven: What.....what happened?

Tokoyami: To my shame, Dark Shadow.....he.....he killed Moonfish. Snapped him in half like a branch and threw him into the forest. Even after killing him, Dark Shadow remained in control and destroyed everything in his path. I was fortunate no one else was hurt because of my friends. But the fact that I still killed someone still haunts me.

Raven began to feel great sorrow. Hearing that loosing control resulted in someone's death seemed impossible to conceive.

Raven: It....it wasn't your fault! 

Tokoyami: But it was Raven. Even if it wasn't my choice, even if it was a villain, I still killed someone. I fully understand that I lost control of my Quirk, but it was still my Quirk that murdered him. That's when my teacher sent me to Gotham to train under Batman. To train to control my Quirk and help me cope with my trauma. 

When Tokoyami finished his story, Raven was in disbelief. She was on the verge of crying, but Tokoyami comforted her.

Tokoyami: Now please.....tell my why does your birthday cause you pain?

Knowing that Tokoyami told his troubled past, Raven felt obligated to tell him hers. She could never truly prepare herself for what was to happen. 

Raven: I was the product of a union between a human woman and a Demon father. But not just any Demon, but the Lord of Demons Trigon. When I was born......a terrible prophecy was foretold.

Tokoyami: What was the prophecy? 

Raven; That I would unlock the portal that would release him onto this world. That I would bring about the end of the world. There. Happy?

As Raven began to cry, Tokoyami hugged her to comfort her. 

Tokoyami: It's okay Raven. It's okay.....

After the tender moment, Tokoyami decides to leave her alone. 

Tokoyami: Good night Raven......

When Tokoyami leaves, Raven attempts to sleep in hopes that the day passes by. When she finally manages to sleep, she endures a nightmare in which the world is covered in flames. She sees her father sitting on a throne made of bones.

Trigon: What you have concealed you shall become. You have no other choice. Your destiny shall be fulfilled. 

As Trigon says this, Raven's body begins to form blood red tattoos of fire. She tries to wipe them off, but is unable to.

Trigon: The portal must be open!

Raven: No! No! NO!

As Raven screams, she wakes up in cold sweat. After that, Tokoyami rushes in to check up on her.

Tokoyami: Raven! Are you okay?! I heard screaming!

Raven: I'm......I'm okay......

Tokoyami: Are you sure? 

Raven: Y.....yes....

As Tokoyami prepares to leave, Raven stops him.

Raven: Wait! Please! Don't leave me alone! Stay with me!

Tokoyami was caught off guard by this. He never thought Raven would be asking him of this. Even with their deep bond, he never would've imagined that she would be so vulnerable to him. He didn't see the normally reserved and borderline emotionless girl, but someone truly scared. 

Tokoyami: Okay. I need to grab something first. 

Tokoyami then runs back to his room to grab something. When he returns, he gives Raven a wrapped gift. Raven was shocked by this. 

Tokoyami: I know you didn't want a surprise party, but I thought you'd might like this.

Raven opens the present to reveal a copy of the Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. She quickly hugs him. Tokoyami returns the hug. 

Raven: Th.....thank you.....

Raven then puts the book on the desk next to her bed. Tokoyami and Raven then get in Raven's beg and attempt to sleep. Raven begins snuggling Tokoyami for comfort.

Raven: Fumikage.....promise me that you'll always be by my side.....please.....

Tokoyami: I will Raven......I promise....

With those comforting words, Raven found peace as she slept next to Tokoyami. Tokoyami felt the same as he cuddled with her. With the truths of both their pasts known to another, Tokoyami and Raven's bond grew deeper.
