Chapter One - A Friend In Gotham

After losing control of Dark Shadow at the training camp, Tokoyami feels overwhelming guilt after he inadvertently killed the villain Moonfish. He locks himself in his dorm room in an attempt to cope with everything that happened that day. Outside his dorm, Tsuyu Asui and Mezo Shoji are waiting outside his door, concerned about their friend.

Tsuyu: I'm worried for Tokoyami, Shoji.

Shoji: Tokoyami hasn't spoken a word to anyone ever since we rescued Bakugo from the League of Villains. Tokoyami is still feeling guilty about what happened at the training camp.

Tsuyu goes to the door and tries to speak with Tokoyami through the door.

Tsuyu: Tokoyami? It's Tsu. We're worried about you! Please say something!

Tokoyami says nothing. The silence deeply concerns Tsuyu.

Tsuyu: Tokoyami? Please! It wasn't your fault!

Shoji then places a hand on Tsuyu's shoulder.

Shoji: Tsu. We need to give Tokoyami his space. There's nothing we can do for now.

Tsuyu: I know Shoji, but we......we can't just leave him like this!

Shoji: I agree, but we can't force Tokoyami to talk to us. We just have to leave him be for now.

Tsuyu: Maybe Mr. Aizawa can help?

Seeing that as a good idea, Shoji and Tsuyu go to their classroom where Shota Aizawa is sitting in his desk, looking over something in his computer.

Tsuyu: Mr. Aizawa?

Aizawa: What is it?

Tsuyu: It's Tokoyami......we're concerned about him! Ever since we rescued Bakugo, he's locked himself in his dorm. He won't talk to anyone!

Aizawa: I see. I'll talk with Tokoyami.

Aizawa then walks to Tokoyami's dorm. He knocks on it.

Aizawa: Tokoyami. This is Aizawa. Open up! We need to talk.

He gets no response. Aizawa decides to use his key to open up Tokoyami's door. He enters his dark room and sees Tokoyami sulking in his bed.

Aizawa: Sorry to barge in, but we need to talk.

Tokoyami didn't respond. Aizawa knew that this wasn't going to be easy. He let out a small sigh and decided to try to console his student.

Aizawa: Look, what happened at the training camp wasn't your fault. It was out of anyone's control.

Tokoyami remained silent.

Aizawa: I know you blame yourself for what happened, but there was nothing you could've done.

After a long silence, Tokoyami finally spoke.

Tokoyami: You don't understand Mr. Aizawa! I killed someone! I know he was a villain....but I still killed him! I know I lost control of my Quirk, but it was still my Quirk that killed him!

Aizawa: You lost control! It wasn't your fault!

Tokoyami: And what if I had killed one of my friends?! What if I lose control again and this time I kill someone close to me! I....I.....

Aizawa then places his hand on the distressed student's shoulders.

Aizawa: I understand more than you think. Here's what's gonna happen, I'm gonna pull some strings and have you train with a mentor of mine in Gotham City.

Tokoyami: Gotham City?

Aizawa: Yeah. He specializes in.....special cases like this. He trained me a long time ago. If anyone should be able to help you get a better control of your Quirk, it's him.

Three days later, Tokoyami was standing at an airport where Aizawa along with some Class 1-A students were seeing him off.

Aizawa: Remember what I said, do exactly as he says and you shouldn't have a problem. Oh and one more thing, when you meet him, give him my regards.

Tokoyami: How will I know it's him?

Aizawa: Trust me, you'll know.

Tokoyami turns to see Tsuyu, Shoji, Mirdoriya and Yaoyorozu standing next to their teacher. Tsuyu then gives Tokoyami a hug.

Tsuyu: I hope this will help you!

Tokoyami: Thank you Tsu. I hope so too.

Shoji: Till we meet again old friend.

Tokoyami: Agreed.

Tokoyami and Shoji shake hands. He then turns to Midoriya and Yaoyorozu.

Tokoyami: Take care, Midoriya and Momo.

Midoriya: You too Tokoyami!

Yaoyorozu: I hope you find what you're looking for!

After saying his goodbyes, Tokoyami boarded the plane headed for Gotham City. Once he takes his seat, Dark Shadow appears and talks with him.

Dark Shadow: So we are we going, buddy?!

Tokoyami: We're going to Gotham City, Dark Shadow.

Dark Shadow: Gotham City?! This should be interesting!

Dark Shadow then retreats back into Tokoyami as the plane takes off. After a long flight, the plane finally lands in Gotham City. Before Tokoyami exits the plane, the flight attendant makes an announcement.

Flight Attendant: Welcome to Gotham City! Enjoy your stay!

Tokoyami exits the plane and the airport. He sees a dapper looking old man waiting beside a limo. He's wielding a sign that bears his name.

Man: Would you be Master Tokoyami?

Tokoyami: I am.

Man: Good. Shall we?

The man opens the door to the limo and Tokoyami goes inside. Once Tokoyami enters the limo, the man begins driving. As they drive, Tokoyami takes in the blood red skies of Gotham City. After taking in the view, Tokoyami begins talking to the driver.

Tokoyami: Who are you?

Driver: My name is Sir Alfred Pennyworth! I'm the servant of Bruce Wayne.

Tokoyami: Bruce Wayne? The playboy millionaire? The CEO of Wayne Enterprises?

Alfred: The very same, Master Tokoyami.

Tokoyami: I remember Bruce Wayne showing up for a presentation over on I-Island. But I didn't peg him for the kind to have trained Mr. Aizawa.

Alfred: Master Bruce is very much a friend of the Hero Community. He's even helped funded some projects over at UA's Support Course. As for Master Aizawa, you'll find out for yourself.

Tokoyami was left puzzled by Alfred's words. After the long drive, they reached the stately Wayne Manor. Tokoyami exits the limo and is stunned by the Gothic architecture of the manor. This appealed to Tokoyami's appeal in all things Gothic. Alfred leads Tokoyami inside Wayne Manor where a young man jumps from the balcony to greet them.

Teen: Hey Alfred!

Alfred: Master Grayson, do you always have to be so cavalier?

Grayson: Sorry! Hehe!

Alfred: Is Master Bruce up and about?

Grayson: Yeah, He's over at the.......where he usually is!

Alfred: I see. Would you care to entertain our guest while I go to Master Bruce?

Grayson: Sure!

Alfred goes to wherever Bruce Wayne was, leaving Tokoyami and Grayson alone.

Grayson: How about we go for introductions? I'm Dick Grayson!

Tokoyami: Fumikage Tokoyami.

Grayson: From the UA Hero School? I knew I recognized that bird head from somewhere! I remember seeing you in the Sports Festival! Not bad!

Tokoyami doesn't respond at Grayson's statement. Grayson lets out a nervous chuckle while scratching the back of his head. Grayson's attitude reminded Tokoyami of both Kirishima and Kaminari.

Grayson: So what brings you over to Gotham?

Tokoyami: Personal matters. That is all I will say.

Grayson: Geez! We've only just met and I can already tell that you and the old man are gonna get along fine!

Tokoyami wasn't amused at Grayson's teasing. Dark Shadow soon appeared to offer his own tease to Grayson.

Dark Shadow: Big tough guy! You got an awesome Quirk like me?!

Grayson: No, but I'm more than capable!

Tokoyami rolls his eyes at Dark Shadow's teasing. Just as Dark Shadow disappears, Alfred returns to the room where Tokoyami and Grayson were.

Alfred: Master Bruce will see you now.

Grayson: Good luck man!

Tokoyami then follows Alfred into the manor library where he goes to an old grandfather clock. He then pulls the clock, which reveals a long stone stairway. Tokoyami is shocked by that.

Alfred: I have some errands to attend to, Master Tokoyami. Master Bruce will see you now. Just follow the stairway and you'll reach him.

Tokoyami walks down the stairway. After a few minutes, he reaches a cave with museum like features such as a giant penny, a large robotic Tyrannosaurus Rex, a large Joker card and other sorts of villain memorabilia. In the center of the cave was a man dressed in a batsuit working on something in a large computer. He pieced it together that Bruce Wayne was the Dark Knight Hero known as Batman. Batman turns around to see Tokoyami in the Batcave.

Batman: You must be Fumikage Tokoyami. Aizawa told me about you.

Tokoyami: So you're the one who trained Mr. Aizawa? I.....

Batman: Yes. I trained Aizawa when he was about your age. I was into my first year as a crime fighter. Aizawa's a good fighter. And with his power, an even more formidable hero.

Just as Tokoyami was overwhelmed by Batman's presence, he remembers Aizawa's request.

Tokoyami: Mr. Aizawa sends his regards.

Batman: Hm. I trust Aizawa's judgement with you.

Tokoyami: Then you know why he sent me.

Batman: Yes. You lost control of your Quirk and inadvertently killed a villain when your training camp was invaded by a group of villains.

Tokoyami: Yes. I lost control of Dark Shadow and I killed him.

Batman: I'm going to help you train you to control it. When we're done, you're going to be stronger than you were before.

Dark Shadow then appears from Tokoyami to respond to the Bat's words.

Dark Shadow: Hey! We're pretty strong already! Mostly because of me!

Batman simply gives Dark Shadow a glare which scared Dark Shadow so much that he immediately disappeared. Tokoyami was left stunned by that display of power.

Tokoyami: You scared Dark Shadow?! How...

Batman: I've dealt with my share of dangerous villains. It doesn't take much to scare a villain. They're a superstitious and cowardly lot. Fear is my best tool.

Tokoyami: I see.

Batman: I studied your Quirk in the Sports Festival. Your Quirk allows you to summon a shadowy monster-like being within your body that can be materialized and de-materialized at any moment. It possesses great defensive and offensive capabilities. While it can still be used in daytime, it is weakened. In nighttime, it becomes more powerful yet more unruly and vicious. Negative emotions such as regret and indignation can help intensify Dark Shadow, causing you to lose control.

Hearing that perfect and on the book definition of his Quirk amazed Tokoyami greatly. Now he knew why Batman was known as the world's greatest detective.

Tokoyami: I....I.....

Batman: But Dark Shadow is meant for long distance combat, making you vulnerable to close range attacks. I can help with that.

Tokoyami: You can?

Batman: Yes. I will help you train to control your emotions so that Dark Shadow won't be able to take control of you again in the way it did. I will also give you hand to hand combat training so that you'll be able to defend yourself in the case of fight. But I must warn you, I won't go easy on you. I will train you exactly as I trained Aizawa as well as everyone I've trained. If I feel you are unable to continue the training, I will personally send you on the first train back to Japan. Am I understood?

Tokoyami realized that training with Batman would be no easy task, but he was willing to take the chance if it meant helping him get better control over his Quirk.

Tokoyami: Yes. I would be honored to train under you.

Batman flashed a small smile.

Batman: Good. Then we'll begin shortly.

This would be the first step for Tokoyami to control his Quirk, but more importantly, cope with the guilt of killing the villain at the training camp. But what he didn't know is what exactly he was getting into. He had no idea of what Gotham would throw at Tokoyami. He was in Batman's territory and he couldn't prepare himself for what Gotham would throw at him.
