Chapter Two

"They say lightning never strikes twice. But that's a myth. It doesn't happen often. Lightning usually gets it right the first time. When you're hit with 30,000 amperes of electricity, you feel it. It can make you forget who you are. It can burn you, blind you, stop your heart and cause massive internal injuries. But for something that happens in only a millisecond, it can change your life forever. Lightning doesn't often strike twice. It's a once in a lifetime thing. Even if it feels like the shock is coming over and over again. Eventually the pain will go away, the shock will wear off. And you start to heal yourself. To recover from something you never saw coming. But, sometimes the odds are in your favor. If you're in just the right place at just the right time you can take a hell of a hit. And still have a shot at surviving"

"i've got issues. you got them too. so give them all to me and i'll give mine to you"

Owen watched Aurora with a soft smile as she woke up. "Good morning", he said.

"Morning"

She held up her hand and peered at her ring, smiling. "I don't wanna go to work. I wanna stay here all day and stare at it", she said.

"Well, you gotta go to work"

He pulled a granola off the bedside table and handed it to her. "Eat this. We'll have a shower, I'll wash your hair and then we'll go to work", he said. "We can enjoy being married for an hour before we work".

"Okay, fine. I'll settle for that"

"Good"

She chuckled as he kissed her.

Jackson hesitantly approached Beck in the residents lounge. "Hey", he greeted.

"Morning"

"Look, about last night. I didn't mean to upset you. I was just trying to..."

"Jackson, that was the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me. I really appreciated it, I promise you. I'm glad I cried, I need to. Thank you, really"

"Oh, then, your welcome"

She smiled and looked at the residents across the room staring at them. "So, when do you think the staring is gonna stop?" she asked him.

"Once the novelty wears off. Just ignore them"

Jackson, Teddy, Beck and Owen were with their patient in her room. "Linda Cotler, age 51, has been here three times in the last eight years for removal of malignant myxomas from her heart", Beck presented. "But we won't be doing that again", Linda said. "No, by removing both atria and hopefully all the cancerous cells, you won't have to keep coming back here", Teddy replied. "Well, sit tight and we'll be back in with some forms for you to sign and then we'll take you up".

Callie was talking to the residents in the ER. "Ok, multiple burn victims, two with paralysis, three with vision loss, one blown eardrums and one dislocated hip", she explained. "House fire?" Lucy asked. "Explosion?" Kelly said. "Act of God", Callie replied. "Act of God?" Lucy responded.

"Yeah, lightning strike"

"All that from one lightning strike?"

"One lightning strike, eight victims. Took out a whole flag football team"

"God was in a mood today"

Mark, Kelly and Aurora were filling out charts at the nurses station. "How did it strike all of them?" Aurora asked. "Well, they're mostly flash burns, so it probably hit one of them, then conducted off onto the rest", Mark explained. Aurora nodded and walked off. "Kelly. T.M. rupture, Trauma One, I'll see you in there", he said. She nodded slightly and walked off. He watched her go with sad eyes. He went over to Callie and Lucy. "Tell me something. When a person gets out of the nuthouse and breaks up with you a week later, what's the appropriate amount of time to wait before you propose?" he asked. Lucy's eyes widened and she looked at him for a second to see if he was being serious. "A very long time", Lucy replied. "And it is a good idea for them to want to be with you before you propose".

"Okay, but specifically how long?"

"Oh, my God"

Callie and Lucy were checking on Kerry's injuries while Mark and Kelly checked her ears. "Ok, can you wiggle your toes for me?" Lucy asked her. "I still can't. Am I gonna be in a wheelchair?" patient Kerry replied.

"We're gonna take you in for a CT, but hopefully it's just temporary, from the lightning"

"A couple of your friends have it, too", Mark reassured. "They're already starting to get some feeling back. Try not to worry". Meredith entered the room. "Hey, Kerry. A friend of yours, Russ Gammie, is asking about you", she informed. "How's Warren Griffith? Is he ok? Did he ask about me?" Kerry asked.

"Which one is Warren?"

Before she could answer, a man rushed in. "Who's this? Russ or Warren?" Lucy asked. "Mitch?" Kerry asked.

"Mitch, now?"

"Have you seen Warren? Is he ok?" Kerry asked Mitch.

"Kerry, I got to say this. We both could've died out there. That lightning bolt was like a one in a million shot. So I gotta take one, too. I love you, Kerry. And if we get through this, I want you to know, I will love you forever"

Lucy raised her hands to clap but Callie pushed them down. "What? I...", Kerry stuttered, pointing to her ear. "Sir, I'm sorry. If you're not being treated, then you have to go to the waiting room", Kelly said to Mitch. "We'll keep you posted". Kelly led him out of the room. Mark checked Kerry's ears again. "Kerry, can you hear me?" he asked her.

"Yeah, I can hear you fine. I just didn't want him to know that I heard...that"

"You're a popular girl", Lucy said.

"No, I'm sure he's just over excited. It is like a one in a million thing. Can someone just please check on Warren for me? I need to know if he's ok?"

"Is Warren your boyfriend?"

"No. He's... No"

"Ok"

Kelly came back into the room. "You know, you've got two burst eardrums, but they will heal themselves, too", Mark said. "Great. Thank you", Kerry whispered. "Does that mean there's no surgery?" Kelly asked. "Can I go? Someone else might have something".

"Maybe you should stick with me. Kerry'll need a work-up"

She sighed.

Callie and Lucy were showing Kerry her scans. "Yep, CT looks clear, no damage to your spine", Callie said. "Which means I can go?" Kelly said. "It means you should observe her '', Mark said. Suddenly, the four boys rushed in, professing love for Kelly. Alex and Meredith followed them. "Everybody shut up! Shut up", Kerry snapped. "Ok, Warren, you talk". Warren stepped forward, smiling. "Kerry, I...", he began before suddenly stopping and coughing up blood.

"Alright, who do I have? Who's free?" Bailey asked out loud. Kelly ran over with Mark trailing behind her. "I'm free! I'm good! I'll go!" she exclaimed. "He's my patient. I'll take him", Alex argued. Bailey poked him and he winced. "Book an OR, you can observe", she said. "I'm fine. And I'm free", Kelly continued while Mark shook his head behind her. Bailey looked at him, confused and Kelly turned around. "Kelly! What are you doing?" she snapped. "Nothing", he replied. "Grey, are you free to scrub in?" Bailey asked Meredith. "Absolutely", she replied.

"Oh right, I forgot. You haven't been cleared for surgery. Little Sloan, you're scrubbing in"

Bailey handed Aurora the chart and they walked off. "I'm fine", Kelly said to Mark.

"Great, then you can keep an eye on Kerry"

Teddy was explaining the procedure to Beck, Jackson and Owen while Beck looked worried. "I'll resect both aria and build new ones of bovine pericardium", she explained. "And during reconstruction, Dr Hunt will stay with Linda, using a human donor aorta to prepare the vessels for re-implantation". "And all this in just four hours?" Jackson asked.

"We have to be fast. We all set?"

"Let's go"

"Alright. Prep her and page me when she's ready"

They all started walking out except Beck and Jackson stopped and turned around. Beck stared at the layout for the procedure. "Beck?" he asked, causing her to look up. "You're excited, right?"

"Mmh-hmm"

"Good. I'll see you in there"

He left the room. Owen had heard the conversation from outside the door and entered the room. She looked up at him with furrowed brows. He sighed. "The fear of going back in is worse than actually doing it", he said. "It's just getting back on the horse, is all it is".

"Yeah, of course. Thank you, Owen"

"No problem"

Meredith was watching Wheel of Fortune in the waiting room when Cristina and Lucy joined her. "Really?" Lucy asked. "This is what I'm cleared to do", Meredith said. "I am cleared to solve this puzzle. Don't buy a vowel you idiot". "The Scarlet Pimpernel", Cristina stated. "How did you even solve that? There was one "C" and an "M"", Lucy said incredulously. "So, Mer, have you talked to Derek yet? About the...", Cristina said. "Today's not the day", Meredith replied. Cristina gave Lucy a look. "No, she's right. He just got out of the joint. You should let him ease back into society", Lucy said. Beck and Kelly came over and sat down shortly followed by Alex and Jackson. "You ready? You up for this?" Jackson asked Beck. "Up for what?" Kelly asked. "Teddy's rebuilding a woman's atrium out of a sack of cow meat", Beck replied. "You're not nervous at all?"

"When have I ever been nervous for a surgery?"

"You're lucky. I get to watch an intestinal perf repair", Alex commented. "Bailey won't let me operate until I get this bullet out". "Are you getting it taken out?" Lucy asked hopefully. He sighed and walked away. Lexie had joined them now. "I'm never gonna operate again", Kelly sighed. "Everyone thinks I'm gonna carve my initials into a patient". The lightning strike attack came up on the news and Lexie ran off, leaving them all in confusion.

Jackson and Beck were scrubbing in. "I'm glad you're back. That we're gonna be in there together...", he said. "It makes me a little less freaked out, is what I'm saying".

"Me, too"

"I thought you said you don't get nervous for a surgery"

"Don't ruin the moment"

"We're having a moment?"

"And now it's ruined"

They were operating. "Alright. The heart is ready", Owen said. "Ok. Here we go", Teddy said. "Start the clock. Dr Jacobs, take the heart please". Beck looked up to see Owen nodding at her in reassurance. She took a deep breath and picked up the heart and put it on ice. "Badass", Jackson muttered, making her smile. "Alright. Here we go", Teddy said. "Excising the right atrium. Welcome back, Dr Jacobs".

"Thank you"

"Time, please?" Teddy asked. "Two hours and 42 minutes", Owen responded.

"We're behind. Dr Hunt, where are you at?"

"Putting in the aortic graft"

"This tissue is more than I need. Dr Jacobs, trim this pericardium, please? Three centimeters"

Beck went to do so. "Ok. Avery, can I get some irrigation in here, please?" Owen asked Jackson. Jackson went to do so and accidentally knocked over a tray, startling everyone. "Sorry! Sorry!" he exclaimed. "Alright. Are we alright?" Teddy asked.

"Sorry, sorry, sorry!"

"It was just a tray", Owen stated. "The aortic cannula's dislodged. Avery, some suction in here, please". "Hunt, talk to me", Teddy said.

"I need a purse string in the aorta. Avery, give me some more visualisation in here, please. Get in there"

"Jacobs, come help me. Jacobs?" Teddy called. They looked around and they couldn't see her until they noticed a body on the floor. "Jacobs, are you there?" Owen asked. Beck lay on the floor, trying to catch her breath. "Beck, you are ok. Can you get up?" Teddy asked. "Avery, I need that tissue now!"

Beck continued to try and breathe.

"Your hands killed my Allison"

"No, I didn't. Please"

"You killed her"

"Please"

He shot her in the stomach and she fell to the floor, gasping for air. She felt her stomach and looked at her fingers which were now covered in blood. She took in a shaky breath.

A tear slipped down her cheek as she squeezed her eyes tightly shut, trying to block out the memories.

Kelly speedily scrubbed in and put a mask over face, rushing into the OR. "Dr Ripa, you shouldn't be in the OR", Teddy warned. Kelly ignored her and laid down in front of Beck. "Beck. Beck!" she called. Beck took in a trembled breath and opened her eyes. "I can't be in here. I can't", she whispered.

"Ok, that's fine. Let's just go. Get out of here"

"I can't-"

"You can. Just come with me"

"No, no. I can't move. I can't move my legs. I can't...move. I can't...breathe. I can't do anything"

"Take my hand, ok? Take my hand. Can you do that?"

Beck nodded numbly and took her hand. "Ok. You're ok", Kelly reassured. "We'll go when you're ready, ok?"

"Yeah"

"So just tell me when you're ready. Ok?"

Beck nodded, still trembling.

Aurora rushed over to Kelly and Beck coming out of the OR after hearing the news. Kelly was practically holding Beck up. "Hey, are you okay?" Aurora asked. Beck didn't respond. Kelly and Aurora exchanged looks. They passed the waiting area where the patient's husband stood up. "Is it over? How is she?" he asked. A wave of panic washed over Beck as she stuttered. "I'm... I'm sorry", Beck said, trying to walk away but Kelly pulled her back. "She's fine. The doctors are still working and someone will be out when they're finished", Kelly reassured. Beck walked off and Kelly and Aurora followed after her.

Beck leaned against her cubby, trying to breathe as Kelly and Aurora rubbed her back. Jackson came rushing in and Beck looked up. "Is she dead?" she asked.

"She's fine. She'll be fine"

"Good"

"Are you ok?"

"I don't know"

He nodded and walked off. Beck put her head in her hands and started sobbing. After a few minutes, she sniffed and wiped her eyes. "I can't", she said. "I can't do it. I thought I could do it. I thought I was ready. I've never not been ready. I don't even know what I'm feeling. I just can't be in there. And if I can't be in there, then where am I supposed to be?" She sniffed and cleared her throat. "I'm going home", she said and left the room. "What the hell are we going to do?" Aurora asked.

"Nothing. There's nothing we can do"

Lucy's pager beeped. She looked at it, it was from Bailey to the OR. She furrowed her brows but went anyway. She entered the OR where Alex and Bailey were talking. "Hi, I was paged here?" she said. Bailey smiled. "How do you feel about holding someone's hand while I take a bullet out?" she asked. Lucy looked at Alex and he shrugged. "Fine", Lucy said.

Mark followed Kelly out of the front entrance of the hospital. "Did I forget to clean something?" she asked.

"No, I just need to talk to you"

"No. You don't, though. I know that you want to be here and pretend that everything is normal between us but it's not"

"Wait..."

"I went through a rough patch and you helped me, and I appreciate that. But you're not my boyfriend anymore. And I am trying to move out of my rough patch, and you won't let me. You're treating me like I'm some basket case. And everyone is watching you and they're believing you. I had a horrible day today...because you didn't let me have a good one. You didn't let me get in on the interesting cases. You didn't let me do anything surgical. You are pulling me away from the only thing that is gonna make me happy right now. I feel nothing. I am numb all the time and I just wanna save someone's life so I can feel like all this crap actually happened for a reason. I am a good doctor, and I don't deserve for anyone to think that I am anything less than that. So could you please just leave me alone? Can you do that? Can you just leave me alone?"

"You got it"

She walked away and he looked down in shame.

Lucy held Alex's hand as Bailey tossed the bullet into a dish. Lucy's eyes filled with tears.

She made her way after him and saw him lying on the floor blood spilling out of him. She screamed.

"You can't leave me alone. Please don't leave me alone. I need you. Don't go, Alex. Don't go"

"Well, if you can handle being shot so well, maybe it should've been you at the other end of that gun instead of me"

She let go of Alex's hand and rushed out of the OR.
