Chapter Twenty
"Germs, disease, toxins. Our bodies encounter dangers all the time, just beneath the surface. Hidden. Whether you realise it or not, your body is constantly protecting itself. Every time you blink your eyes, you wash away thousands of unwanted microbes. Breathe in too much unwanted pollen and you sneeze. The body knows when it's encountered something that doesn't belong. The body detects the invader, it releases its white blood cells and it attacks. Just when we think we've figured things out, the universe throws us a curveball. So we have to improvise. We find happiness in unexpected places. We find our way back to the things that matter the most. The universe is funny that way. Sometimes it just has a way of making sure we wind up exactly where we belong"
"hey little sister, what have you done?"
Derek, Meredith, Alex and Lucy were eating dinner in the kitchen. "I just wanna say I'm really excited about the clinical trial", Derek said. "I was reading in the New England Journal of Medicine...". He continued talking but Lucy caught Alex and Meredith giving each other weird looks.
Alex was presenting the case of Zola through a slideshow. "This is Zola. She's six months old, born with spina bifida", he explained. "Adorable African children. Shameless ego stroking", Cristina commented. "Karev is a genius". "He's single-handedly stealing chief resident out from under all of us", Jackson added. "And we're helping him do it. We can't exactly refuse to treat little sick kids without making ourselves look bad". "He is a genius. Or...", April said, before saying something in Swahili. "That's what they say in Swahili". "Well, he only has a shot because I've been benched", Cristina continued. "The playing field has been levelled. You're all welcome". "You keep telling yourself that", Lucy muttered. "My Alzheimer's trial kicks African orphan's ass", Meredith said. "It kicks all of your asses". "You wanna keep it down back there?" Richard asked them. "I'm trying to listen to what appears to be the next chief resident talking". "Before we go, I wanna say thank you to all of you for your participation", Alex said. "It truly means more than I can say". The attendings started slow clapping. "Slow clap. They're giving him the slow clap? Come on", Jackson said. "I'm not giving him the slow clap".
Teddy, Cristina, Beck and Arizona were in Kondo's room. "Sefu, I will be repairing your brother's heart defect tomorrow while Dr Sloan, our head of plastics, he will construct Kondo a new sternum", Teddy explained. Kondo said something in Swahili to his brother. "He wants to know, if he dies, could we wait to tell the family at home?" Sefu translated. "Our sister's birthday is tomorrow. He doesn't want to ruin it". Arizona sat down on the bed to look at him better. "We are gonna take really good care of you. Ok?" Arizona said. "And you are not gonna ruin your sister's birthday". "We have to look at his chest, ok?" Teddy said. She approached the bed and pulled down his gown to reveal his bare chest and his heart visibly beating underneath it. "Wow", Beck whispered.
Owen, Stark, April and Aurora were in Asha's room. "Asha is ten years old, she sustained internal injuries six years ago from an explosive device", Owen explained. "She has multiple enterotomies". "There are some strictures there and some ascites", Stark added. "She has not healed properly. This complicates things".
"As does the fact that she's HIV positive. She's living with AIDS"
April greeted the patient and tried to speak Swahili to her. Asha looked terrified. "Don't be scared", April reassured before trying to speak more Swahili. "I'm just gonna take your blood pressure now, ok?" Asha recoiled. "Oh, no, it's ok, it's ok. We're here to help", April said before speaking more Swahili. "Help". "Let's get her an LR at maintenance and start broad spectrum antibiotics", Owen said.
"Understand?"
She started speaking more Swahili. "Help. Help", she said. "Dr Kepner?" Owen said, stopping her. "The antibiotics and the LR. You too, Dr Sloan".
"Right, sorry, Dr Hunt. Right away"
"Dr Kepner, perhaps if you spent a little more time just doing your job and a little less time learning the new languages, your attendings wouldn't have to repeat themselves", Stark said. "Wow, he really doesn't like you", Aurora said to April as they left the room.
Beck was practising for Teddy surgery in the research lab where Jackson was tending to mice poop. "I mean, you'd think being on the chief's research project would help in the race for chief resident", he said. "You might even think it'd make me a contender. Only, I'm not saving little kids or people with Alzheimer's. I am cleaning up mouse poop".
"Can you hand me that basin?"
"Wanna hear my conversation with the chief every morning? "Avery, how are the mice?" "They're fine, chief. They're running on their wheels, they're eating their cheese". If I worked at a pet store, I'd be employee of the month by now, but I'm a surgeon, babysitting a bunch of mice"
"Until you get FDA approval. I'm sure you're gonna be working on humans any day now. Now grab me another plum"
"Why are you peeling these things apart, anyway?"
"I'm practising. While you were busy complaining, you should've been congratulating me. I am getting in on a super unique surgery with Altman. My kid's skin has grown directly onto the heart muscle, I'm gonna be helping her remove the adhesions without puncturing the heart"
He smiled, picking up a plum and eating it. "Hey, don't eat my
adhesions!" she laughed, grabbing his arm. "Oh, gross!"
Stark, Owen, April and Aurora were operating on Asha. "We couldn't stop the bleeding so we rushed her here", Stark explained. "What the hell?" "It looks like wax", Aurora commented, astonished.
"I have never seen anything like this"
"Nobody has, at least not in the States. She has intestinal TB, poor kid", Owen said.
"Adhesions everywhere. It's hard to even know where to begin"
"The perforation is pretty high at the lesser curvature"
"We should treat it like a normal perf, right? Then start the anti-TB meds?" April suggested. "The less aggressive we are, the greater chance we can avoid short gut syndrome", Aurora added, agreeing. "Absolutely right. Let's start by ligating the bleeding vessel", Owen said.
Derek and Lucy walked into the kitchen where Alex and Meredith were. "Morning", Derek greeted but Lucy noticed tension between the two at the table. Before she could ask, Alex got up. "I'm late for work", he said, leaving the room.
Arizona, Teddy, Cristina and Beck were operating on Kondo. Mark entered the OR. "You ready for me yet?" he asked. "Just about", Teddy replied. "Ok, Jacobs. Time to repair the VSD through the diverticulum". "Can I have a little suction here, please?" Beck asked Cristina, who did. "Thank you". "Uh huh", Cristina mumbled. "There's a small defect at the neck of the diverticulum", Teddy said. "Jacobs, pull up on your pickups so I can get in there. Hold the graft". "Are you gonna use an 11 blade to make the incision?" Beck asked her. "No, she's going in blind,'' Cristina answered. Teddy looked at Cristina for a moment. "Five-0 suture", Teddy said. "I'm sewing in the graft. Jacobs, would you like to tie off when I finish?" "Yes, of course. Thank you", Beck replied.
Arizona walked down the aisle led by her father. Callie walked down the aisle, led by Mark. Kelly and Mark locked eyes and her breath hitched, seeing him in a suit like that. They smiled at each other. They made it to the altar where Bailey was waiting. "We are here today to celebrate love and happiness and loyalty and, in my opinion, a little bit of magic", she said. Aurora and Owen smiled at each other. Mark pulled Kelly closer to him. "To bring together two exceptional and beautiful human beings", Bailey continued. "I take you, Calliope Torres, to be my wife", Arizona said. "I choose you to be the one with whom I spend my life", Callie said. They put the rings on each other's fingers. "Ok, I hereby pronounce you wife and wife", Bailey declared and they kissed.
Everybody was at the reception and laughed as April took pictures from many angles of Callie and Arizona's first dance. Jackson, Beck, Owen, Aurora, Alex and Lucy were standing around, talking to each other. "I was wrong to doubt the mice. Karev, watch your back", Jackson said. "Mouse J just made me a contender. Thank you, Mouse J". "To Mouse J", Beck said, raising her glass as Jackson leaned into her. "You're not the only contenders, you know", Owen said. "My sources tell me that Kepner could be a dark horse". Owen sipped his drink before Alex took his glass. "No offense, Dr Hunt, but I have you scheduled for a Swenson procedure on a two-year-old orphan tomorrow morning", he said. "I'm sure you understand. I'm just looking out for the kids that I brought here. From Africa". Aurora chuckled, picking up the glass and taking a sip.
April, Jackson, Beck and Lexie danced together, smiling and laughing.
Later on in the night, when there was a slow song, all the couples got up to dance. Lucy and Alex danced together. "Do you remember our wedding night?" Alex asked.
"Yes, I distinctly remember being in the hospital, bald because you convinced me I could look hot bald"
"You did look hot"
"Liar"
Kelly and Mark danced together. "It was a really beautiful service", she commented.
"Yeah, I hope ours is as beautiful as this"
She tried to hide the look of shock and slight fear on her face. Aurora and Owen danced together. "You look beautiful", he said to her.
"Thank you. So do you. I love you"
"I love you too"
Beck and Jackson danced together. He stared at her for a moment and smiled. "What?" she asked.
"You're gonna hate it"
"Well, you won't know unless you say it"
"I really like you, Beck"
She laid her head on his shoulder as her eyes filled up with tears.
