You’re disappearing,
more and more, without a sound
from me, without any reason
Was everything a misunderstanding?
Were we looking at each other in a dream?
I need somebody// Day6
.
16th February 1951
Border between
North and South Korea
THE TRENCH was never a good and lovely place, but in the last few days things seem to get tougher for the South Korean army, as the number of injured soldiers blew up uncontrollably and the deaths increased.
A situation of disadvantage for the nation, who kept sending its sons to go and protect her gates, but would never have the chance to welcome them back.
Pity and just pity are the emotions I feel for those people, hurt both physically and mentally: imagine their psyche being triggered day after day, week after week, their perception of life and survival subjected to a great damage.
A big circus of inhuman conditions orchestrated by people who didn't know what ”sacrifice” actually meant, for they always used citizens as a protective shield.
Crouched down behind a small hill of soil, were Taeyong and Jaehyun, who anxious and full of fear, tried to analyze the scenario surrounding them with rationality and cold blood.
Their eyes flickered every time they witnessed a bomb exploding, their ears instinctively covered by trembling hands, while their mind went blank — several negative, yet realistic thoughts filling their conscience.
«We have to find a way to attack them without us being affected!»
Taeyong shouted at his fellow, hoping to be heard in the midst of that atrocious confusion.
The younger quickly nodded, moving his attention back to the deadly sight.
After making up their minds, the two males got out of their temporary hidden place and ran as fast as they could to another location, while holding tight their rifles.
Few moments filled with the loud sound of their boots walking on the uncertain path of salvation, the palpitant heartbeat of two young souls who desperately craved for life and with silent tears, hidden because of shame or because of a useless fragile masculinity.
More steps were made and the very end of the border looked scarier than it already was. The diverse uniforms of the enemies were now more than visible, their familiar language more audible and the desire of winning the war fully displayed in their eyes insanely spine-chilling.
None of the different sets of stacks seemed like a place secure enough: all you needed in that moment was just luck, nothing else.
«Let's separate ways from now on,
it'll be easier...!»
Taeyong suggested, patting the other one's shoulder, when he noticed that the idea of parting ways wasn't well welcomed by him.
The older then mouthed a low ”It's okay, we'll be fine”, before disappearing behind the dust created by the fierce of the bombs.
Jaehyun stared at the figure of his mate getting farther and farther away, before bringing his attention back to the enemies. Cautiously observing their actions, he tried to study their moves in order to know when to attack or to place an effective trap.
Tiptoeing to the other side of the mountain of stacks, the young man placed his hand on his helmet — as if that would actually protect him from any harm and then stopped on his track, turning around with a swift move and opened the fire towards the opponents.
His grip on the rifle was strong, but the force with which the bullets were shot was too heavy even for him. His fit arms seemed to not be enough.
He closed his eyes, hoping to have hurt some of the North Korean soldiers and his prayers immediately found teir answer, when from the other side a series of screams and cries reached his ears.
Suddenly a shot reached his hidden place, followed by many others: the male panicked when he noticed the sand falling out of the bags, soon reaching the ground. He ran away from the place, quickly looking at his surroundings — sure that he would find a better location.
The shootings kept going on, some bullets looked like they were even following each and every one of his fast steps.
Anxiety started filling him up, as the thought of not making it to the end of the war popped up in his mind.
The same moment those negative fears were eating him up, Jaehyun heard a cry.
A familiar one. Maybe too familiar for his liking.
Throwing away his weapon, the soldier ran as fast as he could to the source of the whining voice. The short journey seemed to get longer for no reason, a bad feeling making him feel uneasy about the whole situation.
Finally reaching the spot, the brown haired boy's eyes grew wide, while his body started trembling.
Without thinking twice, he approached the bloody fellow laying on the floor, as he kneeled down next to him.
Tears immediately started forming: the aching figure of Taeyong tightly holding on his broken and bloody knee was such a rough image to see.
«Tae, what the hell happened?»
Jaehyun asked desperately, shaking the older's shoulders, who just continue rolling on the ground in pain.
«A- a bomb exploded near my location...»
The hurt one said, hissing from time to time.
The younger, on the other side, didn't really know what to do. Seeing his friend in those conditions didn't help neither.
And that's when the thought of loosing another close person flourished in his memories, the same thing was going to happen soon and he wasn't absolutely ready for this.
Not again.
«I have to search for help-»
«No- No Jae, don't...!»
Taeyong spat out, holding the sleeve of the other's uniform.
He shook his head repetitively, while still holding on his damaged area of his leg, which was slightly awry, probably due to the broken bones.
The kneecap was quite visible, since both the skin and the underneath muscles were ripped off by the explosion.
The uniform was entirely covered by blood and dirt, some parts of the cloth were missing, others were even cut off.
The helmet disappeared, exposing his beautiful red hair, although in that moment nothing really looked beautiful about him.
«Please kill me...»
Then he whispered enough to be heard from the brunette, who stared at him in pure shock
«Please, I can't deal with this pain anymore...»
he kept whining, his dirty cheeks soon washed by the hot tears running across them.
«Do you want to see me suffer? I bet not. So, I beg you... End my suffering.»
«No Taeyong, don't say those things.
I'll find another team and we'll take you to the headquarters, okay?!»
Jaehyun assured, at this point, he himself wasn't that sure about what he was saying.
The desperation spoke for him, the desire of keeping his friend alive was what drove his actions.
But the reaction and the response of the older, made it clear that he wanted to give up on life, knocking on the death's door on purpose.
He completely lost his will to live.
«Kill me, Jung Jaehyun.
This is an order from an authority.»
Taeyong finally demanded, his piercing eyes staring at the younger's soul.
The other one froze at the command received by the male, realizing that one of the most important rules for a soldier was to obey to the orders of an authority.
Even if he was almost going to die, the red head never failed to amaze him with his smartness.
Slowly standing up, the taller grabbed a random rifle abandoned next to the location and looked at the fellow's face for the last time.
Pointing the weapon towards the guy's heart, Jaehyun closed his eyes and then finally pressed the trigger
«Rest in peace, Lee Taeyong.»
The shot was fired and Taeyong was now officially dead.
Letting the rifle fall on the ground, the living soldier fell on his knees as well, hiding his crying face with his hands — immediately regretting his actions.
His sorrow was so loud that it caught the attention of a South Korean team passing by, who quickly and subtly approached the mate, asking him what happened
«Soldier Jung Jaehyun, soldier Jung Jaehyun say something!»
but as expected, he never answered their questions.
And when they finally understood what happened, they all kept silent.
Taking off their helmets, they all started at the corpse of the red haired male and quietly prayed for his peace.
This, unfortunately, wasn't just a nightmare.
