.
26th November 1950
Border between
North and South Korea.
IF A BATTLEFIELD was already rough on its own, imagine if it was hit by the harsh water drops of an angry storm. The fastidious mud making the soldiers stumble, while trying to attack to conquer and hide to live.
A scenery, this, hard and sad, as the dark clouds covered the upper space, the air becoming cleaner and cleaner.
Jaehyun cautiously walked on the soft, yet sticky soil, as he tried as much as he could to avoid any deadly and dangerous mine, while gesturing Taeyong to pass him more loads for his rifle.
They were four of them for this unit: less members, less problems, more mobility.
This is what their chief commander used to always say every morning, when the troops had to head to the field.
A loud explosion was then heard, followed by granules of soil spreading all around and then atrocious screams of lives probably taken away.
The dirt hit the soldiers scattered around the damaged area, small parts of earth dirtying their already consumed uniforms.
Jaehyun felt shivers go down his spine, as he realized that one of the many voices crying in pain was the one of one of his roomates. He stared at the point where the attack occured, his eyes opened wide and his lips slightly parted
«Hey Jaehyun, what are you doing?
Let's go away from here!»
Taeyong shouted, while shaking the younger's shoulder.
The brown haired male slowly nodded, while processing what the other just said to him and then ran off with the rest of the team
«I'm sure that was Doyoung's voice tho...»
He whispered to himself, still trembling
«Did you say something?»
The other one asked raising an eyebrow.
He looked clearly pissed off by the sluggishness his mate was suddenly showing, but didn't bother to scold him.
He was mature enough to know that there was a time and season for everything. And this wasn't the time to wonder who were the unfortunate people who just lost their chances to be able to breathe again.
«Nothing.»
Running through the sidewalk, the young men looked at their surroundings to see if someone needed their help, but it seemed like the others were busy with the enemy and didn't need any.
Jaehyun then took a small mine out of his pocket, pulled the top of it and threw it on the other side of the border. Manifesting soon after.
«Good shot, dude.»
One of his mates told him, patting his back as their ears were filled with shouting soldiers.
But the race wasn't over: if there was something which knew no end, that was surely the stretch of road to run across, just to avoid unpleasant surprises.
As his legs were fastly moving on their own, Jaehyun seriously thought he would die soon or later.
His breath was cut short, while his vision blurry. He felt like his body would leave him soon, making him be a useless and lifeless corpse. A burden to his fellows.
But no. If you actually think he was going to die, I'm glad to tell you that you're wrong.
The pressure of the situation, the stress put upon his built muscles and the difficulty of the activity were what really killed him mentally.
A state of mind no one would ever want to experience.
«Behind the grass, fast!»
Taeyong exclaimed, throwing his body on the little grass present in that area. The rest of the guys following his swift moves.
Jaehyun went and lay beside the older, while taking the chance to satisfy his thirst.
He brought out a flask and drank from it, then shared it with the others.
«Am I wrong or they seem to be stronger than before?»
«I know right? It's even harder than before.»
«I'm afraid I will not be able to see my daughter anymore...»
One of the other male said laughing sadly, while his friend just stared at him with empathy.
Taeyong who noticed that Jaehyun suddenly become paler, when he heard the two talking, grabbed his hand and held it tightly.
He kindly smiled at the younger, although his eyes were becoming a bit teary, and whispered reassuring words.
As if they would really help...
«Don't worry, Reira and your parents are still waiting for you.»
Maybe those words weren't enough to calm the tormented soul of the taller, but the name of his lover surely made him smile. And the thought of his parents... Dear parents.
Saying that he missed them would be an understatement, no neither. A great lie, better.
Suddenly a memory came to his mind, what a good timing: in cases like this, a good journey to the past was what he needed to calm down his spirit.
So he closed his eyes, trying to ignore the chaotic and sorrowful atmosphere around him.
The sounds of the weapons slowly becoming a joyful laughter, the rain as bunch of warm sun rays, the old uniform becoming a clean and elegant dressing and the men around him as his family and friends.
He was slowly approaching his father with a basket full of corns, while happily grinning at him as the distance between them became shorter and shorter.
The old man on the other side, sat on a small wooden chair, trying to get some milk from one of the cows in the stable.
Jaehyun bent over and kneeled down beside the man, who smiled at him and pat his head proudly saying
«Aah, my son is really the greatest.»
«You mean my son.»
A higher voice suddenly jokingly said: a short, thin woman made her entrance in the allowance with two cups of hot tea in her hands.
She handed the drinks to the two males, wrapping her hands around their shoulders and placing a kiss on each of their cheeks.
Jaehyun placed his head on his mother's shoulder, feeling her warmth and hugging her as well.
The two spouses giggled at each other's silliness, without even realizing that their son was lovingly staring at then, a strange yet sweet feeling filling him up.
The young man really loved his parents, he would have done everything for them, even fulfilling their most secret desires: like him becoming a successful doctor.
And although they never told him directly, their wish was to have a doctor in their family and although that wasn't necessarily what he wanted to do for living, he still made the choice to become one.
Just to make them happy.
Just to see them smile.
Just to make them even more proud than they already were.
But unfortunately for him, the enlistment letter came before the admission to the university and that meant a drastic change for his future, their future.
A new puzzle added to his too perfect life, that now made it unpredictable.
If at first he wanted to save lives and cure people,
now he was forced to do the exact opposite.
To be honest, that hurt him.
A lot.
Anyways he was sure that his parents wouldn't hate him because he instead became a soldier. How could they?
He was their lovely son after all.
And after all
we're all beautiful people if we look at ourselves through the eyes of who loves and appreciate us.
