"Well, Cameron, we made it another day."

"To another day!"

Our glasses clink

"I'm so glad we found each other, Morgan. If I die, I don't even care, because I'll die with my best friend."

I smile sadly. "This whole war is insane. You're the only good part about it." I trace hearts into her hand. "I love you."

"I love you, too. You're the best friend a girl could ask for."

"I'm going to bed early tonight. It's been a long day."

"Okay, bud."

I lean back and open my journal.

May 5

Cam and I have officially survived three months in Maryland, fighting almost every day. Only fourteen of the original forty-five recruits are still alive. I'm so lucky Cam and I are two of them.

Life has been brutal. Mentally and physically. Not a day goes by that I don't think of Laura and Hunter. I hope they're okay. I'm getting even more and more stubborn, and now I'm starting to get defensive about everything. I don't know how Cam puts up with me. Her hearing is getting worse. Every time I hear a loud noise, my first thought is to protect her from a gun. I'm turning into her ears. Her eyesight is almost entirely gone, too.

Cam and I have to share our room with someone new. They're coming later tonight. And the room next to us will be occupied, too. Good-bye, peace.

This new round of recruits haven't even gotten settled, but tomorrow they're still expected to go out and kill people. Some of them are only nine years old. Bless their hearts.

"Morgan! Our new roommate is here. Her name is Liv," Cam walks up to me with a tiny girl holding a backpack.

"Hi, I'm Morgan. Nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you, too."

Cam smiles at me. "A new bed is coming for her tomorrow, and I told her she could have mine tonight."

I nod and scoot over. She lies down next to me. "I'm so glad I'm here with you, Morgan."

I wrap her up in a hug.

"Are you two sisters?" Liv asks.

"Yep," I reply and shrug sheepishly at Cameron. Even though I've only known her for three months, Cam is practically my sister. She knows me better than anyone. "Liv, feel free to get comfortable. We'll have to wake up early tomorrow," I tell her, then turn back to Cameron.

"What's wrong, bud?" Cam asks. "You look really sad."

"Well, before I came here, I was stationed in California. There, I met this girl named Laura." I tell her the entire story, and by the end, Cam is holding me tightly. "And I just feel so bad for just leaving her. I never talked to Laura again after that."

"Because you met me..." Cameron sighs.

I nod.

"But it's okay. Laura and Hunter are happy together. I hope. But we have each other now, and you're so much better than both of them combined," I smile.
