Divinations Class
Sitting on a fat little cushion across from Parvati and one table below Neville in a murky, incense-laden room, you held back a cough at the smokey air around you when you turned to Trelawney as she spoke. “Welcome, my children. In this room, you shall explore the mysterious art of Divination. In this room, you shall discover if you possess…”
She started mysteriously giving you a chance to blink at her very thin frame, large glasses that magnified her eyes to several times their natural size, and draped in gauzy, spangled shawl. Before continuing her speech. “The Sight. Hello. I am Professor Trelawney. Together, we shall cast ourselves into the future. But know this. One either has the Gift or not.
It cannot be divined from the pages of a book. Books only cloud one's Inner Eye.” Grimacing at her dramadicy you turned to Harry and Ron's table and had to blink several times when Hermione suddenly appeared in between them. When "You, boy! Is your grandmother well?" Was called out by Trelawney making you jump and turn to look up at Neville who blinked a couple times.
"I...I think so." Neville answered getting a look from the professor that made you quietly suck in a breath through your teeth as she said. "I wouldn't be so sure of that." Before turning to continue walking around the room. "The first term will be devoted to the reading of tea leaves. If all goes well, we will proceed to palmistry, fire omens, and
finally... the crystal ball. By the way, dear, beware a red haired man."
Trelawney said making Parvati eye Ron dubiously and edge her cushion away from him. Tuning back to your professor. "Unfortunately, classes will be disrupted in February by a nasty bout of flu. I myself will lose my voice. And in late spring, one of our numbers will...leave us forever."
Blanching at that last bit you worriedly turned to Harry as the rest of the class exchanged uneasy glances when Trelawney smiled brightly. "Well then. Shall we?" She asked pulling out several tea sets. Getting up and getting two pretty lavender cups and the tea leaves for you and Parvati, you went back to your table and was about to set up when from the corner of your eye you saw Neville trip and drop one of the pink cups he was carrying.
"Neville you okay? You didn't get cut did you?" You asked helping the clumsy gryffindor up as Ron snickered walking over to get his, Hermione's and Harry's cups. "Neville you gotta look where you're going mate." Ron said patting his friends back as he headed back to his table.
Ten minutes later you were rubbing your tongue on the roof of your mouth to sooth your burned taste buds as you looked into Parvati's tea cup to look at the pattern of tea leaves stuck to the bottom of her cup. "Uuum, well it's a bit cloudy but it looks like an apple. Which means… uh your going to be almost passing every test?"
You muttered turning to look in your divination book as you looked into the cup again. Turning to the Professor as she walked around you glanced at Parvati who was scrunching her face while looking at you tea cup. "Broaden your minds, my dears. And allow your eyes to see... beyond."
You heard Trelawney say as she took Lavender's cup to take a look inside. "A five-leaf clover... You can expect to wake with a horrible rash tomorrow morning, dear.” She said before turning casually. “Mr. Longbottom, after you've broken your first cup…" She started just as Neville lost hold of the cup he was holding.
Moving to catch it you grimaced when you missed and heard it shatter on the floor getting the professor to finish her sentence. "Would you be so kind as to select one of the blue ones? I'm rather partial to the pink ones." Turning a sympathetic smile up at the boy you turned back to Parvati.
"So what does my leaves say?" You asked as the indian girl turned to her textbook. "Ants. I see ants which means...evil omen? Or it could be impending difficulties." Parvati said making you sweat a little. "Both of those sound terrible." You muttered just as you heard a loud gasp from Trelawney.
Turning to her Parvati asked her what was wrong making the professor turn to Harry with a mixture of pity and fear. "My dear boy... You have the Grim." She said quietly getting Seamus to ask "The Grin? What's the Grin?" Making you turn to him and shake your head. "No she said the grim. Not grin."
You corrected just as Thomas asked what the grim meant. Getting Lavender to open her book and flip a few pages “The Grim...Taking the form of a giant spectral dog, it is among the darkest omens in our world. It is an omen... of death.” Lavender read aloud making everyone turn to her in shock.
Quickly turning back to Harry you saw him peering into his cup with an unreadable look on his face. Clearing her throat Trelawney turned to the class. “Th-that’ll be all for today. I want you all to continue studying your tea leaves for the next week and write down what you see.” She said making everyone start to gather their things.
Grabbing your parchment, ink, and books you quickly caught up to your friends at the door. “Well that was... something. You get a death omen and I get one that's either something evil or means impending difficulties. Why can't we have at least one year where nothing happens?”
You asked lightly grabbing Harry's sleeve as he turned to you with a half smile. “Well at least we know nothing borings going to happen.” He said as the four of you started heading down the stairs a little quickly wanting to get to Hagrid's class, to see what he had in-store for it.
