Annalise

To get the best brownie at a party, I knew that certain tactics had to be used. Some were vicious, tearing the table apart. Some stood back, meekly waiting for an opportunity that would never come.

Yes, it was an art.

But I smirked, seeing as the advantage was mine. With a lazy flick of my wrist, I moved the brownie from the platter to my open mouth. It was perfectly chocolaty, just the way I liked it, with no burnt edges.

Lovely.

Then, I strode over to the most handsome boy in the room, with some stubble, chiseled features, and a half grin that made me twitch. And I leaned in towards his ear, while he didn't even flinch.

"I know why you took me here, you cheating scum. To see Lexi Artisna. Apparently, she's your type instead of me, tall blonde- and she's got no taste in personality, perfect for you. She couldn't see through a clear jar. You've been dating behind my back, you slime ball. Screw you." I told him under my breathe.

He paused, and I took every pleasure in his world, his lies crumbling down. He was my boyfriend. Matthew. But now, I could give him the title of ex.

I went to the dance floor, where I moved  to the beat the robot DJ was putting on, but at the same time, I concentrated on the drink Matt was holding. In my minds eye, it swung up, spoiling his shirt and the gift I knew he kept for Lexi in his pocket. A picture of the secret couple, kissing.

I didn't know how I knew these things. But I always could read people.

That's why that happy, kissing couple was now drowning, the photo being hopelessly ruined by a drink.

Where had the times gone when I was the one, happy next to Matt, the perfect twosome, almost one person, we were so in sync. I missed him deeply, but with a burning hatred marring my good memories of us. He had been cheating for nearly two months. And he said that he loved me, too, another blatant lie, that love had been one sided.

Fingering my metal wrist, a part of me that has been replaced to let me know the exact time, all the time, and helped me throw up to three football fields, I levitated another object, the entire punch bowl that a girls elbow was near, so it wouldn't be suspicious.

It homed in on his shoes, and I braced myself as I forced it to spill on his Jordan's. He spent more money on shoes then I did.

And vengeance felt sweeter then the brownies.

"What the- my shoes! Who the heck did this?" He screamed.

Then, my phone rang in my pocket, and I stepped outside to pick it up, into the chilly autumnal air.

"Hello? Annalise Greenberg here." I responded.

"Annalise Greenberg? Yes, it's you who we needed to speak to. I suggest you listen." Rasped an ominous voice. I gasped.

"We know where you are at all times. We see you. We hear you. And we have intimate knowledge of your levitation abilities. If you do not want to be exploited, then you will go to the Bridge of Discovery tonight at ten O'clock exactly. Your powers are rare, Annalise. If they knew about your gift, you would be under scrutiny by everyone."

Static voices sounded in the background, the tittering of laughter and words I couldn't make out.

I wondered if he was bluffing or not, but either way, he was correct. If I managed to be exposed, my levitation powers and all, that would mean the end of my entire life. Everything would be gone, and I would belong to the government, or scientists.

And I couldn't take that.

I groaned.

"Fine, fine, I'll come. But only if you don't release any of my information."

"If you don't come, be forewarned: we'll hunt you down using all our force. That I can assure you of, besides, of course, the fact that you'll never live a normal life again. And that you'll be barely conscious in a full body cast, if you're lucky. So don't even think of trying to escape. Ten. Be there."

The phone went dead, shocking me slightly.

Seeing in front of my eyes the time, nine O'Clock. I took one last glance at the boisterous party, and began to slowly move away.

First Matt, now some type of crazy trying to lead me into a trap? What, did he think I would fall for something that stupid? Levitating myself was an ability I had as well, so I could always just scamper out of there.

Unless...the government, serving under the King, would already be there, tipped off by the anonymous caller. They would be watching me, waiting to see what the tip was all about. I couldn't float in front of them.

I couldn't decide an answer to that as I headed towards the bridge, a pretty sketchy area.

Under the bridge, people sold everything from Cyborg Organs to illegal Automatons, to weapons with built in heart seekers, to kill on contact. I would have taken my hover, but under the bridge, it surely would have been stolen.

The night sky was dark, and my stomach rumbled as I realized I was hungry. I took out a sandwich from my pocket book and devoured it.

Then, I heard a voice from behind me.

"Is that...enjoyable?" A boy with blond hair and beady black eyes like coals whispered.

I shot out my fist, and lifted him thirty feet away as I sprinted away. But I cried out as I realized he had set me on fire, somehow.

"Who are you?" I cried.

"Who are you?"

He pointed his fingers at me, and a ring of fire surrounded me, leaving no escape path. He had powers. Very different powers, but gifts, nonetheless. I extinguished the flame with a gust of wind.

"I'm your worst nightmare." He bared his teeth before disappearing into the night.
