Chapter 9
Huey followed Katie around FOWL. "...And this is the kitchen," she explained. The room they were in was echoey. The air was cold and they could hear the hum of the refrigerators. There was one large freezer up against the wall next to a sink and dishwasher. In the middle were two kitchen islands. From above them hung pots and utensils.
"And these," she began, leading him down a hall. "These are the rooms. You've already seen yours, but this one is mine," she said gesturing to a door.
They stepped in. Hers was a lot larger than his. She had a personal book nook set up underneath her bed. The bed was held up by a wooden frame and a ladder leading up. The sheets were purple and one fuzzy black blanket laid on top. In the book nook was a large red bean bag next to a small bookshelf. The walls were a deep red, matching the bean bag. On the side of the room opposite to the bed was a light purple desk.
He ran his hand along the door frame. "So, yup, that's FOWL," she smiled, her hands on her hips.
"So, do you have a mission or anything?" she wondered.
"Uh, no, not yet anyway," he said.
"Neat, I don't have one either. But someday, I'll go out their in the field!"
Huey chuckled. She reminded him of Webby but different. He looked down at his feet.
"Hey, is something wrong?" she asked.
Huey forced a smile. "Just thinking about my family," he said.
She set a hand on his shoulder. "You miss them? I've got a sister, but she's in college. I miss her sometimes too," Katie said.
Huey smiled at her.
"Now come on, I'll show you how to spar," she said.
...
Back at the mansion, Boyd was still trying to help Gosalyn with her headache.
"No! Stop it! I'm not sick!" Gosalyn cried.
Boyd persisted on trying to give her soup. "Please, Gosalyn. I'm only trying to help," he said.
"No, you're trying to choke me!" she exclaimed.
Boyd finally gave up. "If you're so sure you're fine, you'll have no problem letting me scan you?" he asked.
Gosalyn put her hands on her hips. "Go ahead, but you won't find anything, you crazy robot," she agreed.
Boyd's eyes turned a glowing blue and he scanned her.
"Well?" she asked.
Boyd had a confused expression. "Well, you're not sick, but you're not normal either," he said.
Gosalyn crossed her arms. "My grandpa used to say I was full of spirit. Maybe that's what you're picking up," she said.
Boyd ignored her. "I don't know what it is, but something supernatural is in your bloodstream," he explained.
Gosalyn was taken back. "Was I poisoned! Am I going to die! Tell my dad I loved him!" she panicked, melting to the floor dramatically.
Boyd stopped her. "No, you're not going to die," he said. She stood up and let out a thankful breath of air. But Boyd kept talking.
"Well, technically you are going to die at some point in the future. Everyone will eventually, but not any time soon, unless you die of unnatural causes like car accident, falling off a roof, a-"
"I get the point!" Gosalyn stopped him. "So what do you think it is?" she wondered.
Boyd put a finger to his chin. "I don't know. It could be something with magical properties," he thought.
"So I was cursed?" she asked.
Boyd shrugged. "I don't know, but I'll try to figure it out."
Meanwhile, Webby and Violet roamed the hallways of McDuck mannor, looking for Gandra. They were disappointed when they came up unsuccessful.
"She was just here! Where did she go?" Webby whined.
Violet shrugged. "I think she went home."
Webby sighed. "Ugh! We should've ended our investigation meeting sooner," she complained. She went on walking and took a seat at a chair in the hallway. She leaned her head on her palms.
"Hey, Webigail, look!" Violet said, pointing.
Webby followed her gaze to the back the chair she was sitting on. Resting on top of the head of the chair was Gandra's light blue jacket. Webby jumped up and stood next to Violet. "Aha! A clue!" the pink duckling cheered. She grabbed the jacket. "If she left, why is her jacket still here?" Webby said.
"She probably forgot it," Violet said. Webby ignored her and began searching through the pockets.
Webby gasped when she found something. "What? What is it?" Violet asked.
From the pocket, Webby pulled out a business card that read FOWL. "Do you know what this is!" Webby's eyes widened in disbelief. Violet shook her head.
"It's a business card for the Fiendish Organization for World Larceny!" she yelped. Violet raised an eyebrow, not really knowing what it all meant. "Gandra's working for some bad people!"
Webby and Violet raced down the stairs. "Come on, we have to tell Gizmo Duck!" Webby said. She slid down the foyer, Violet struggling to keep up. The two girls rushed outside, where Beakly was talking to the metal super hero. Violet slid to a stop behind Webby. The girl in pink jumped back and forth on her feet. "Granny! Gizmo Duck! I have something really important to tell you!" she exclaimed. The two adults turned their attention to her.
"What?" Beakly asked.
"Gandra is-" Webby felt her throat turn immediately dry when she saw Gandra standing behind Gizmo Duck. Webby and Violet hadn't seen her before, and they suddenly grew nervous.
The raven haired girl raised an eyebrow. "Gandra is- is-" Webby stuttered.
"What about me?" Gandra asked. Webby glanced at her grandmother.
"Gandra is going to play a game with us!" Violet covered. "Yeah it involves Fluffy Otters for Watery Lakes!" Webby added.
Gandra squinted at them. "That sentence didn't even make sense!" she said.
"And that's the goal of the game! Make a sentence that doesn't make sense! Now come on, let's go inside and play it!" Webby said. She started to push their babysitter inside, smiling nervously. Gandra just shrugged and went inside.
Violet and Webby skipped up to the house, ahead of Gandra. "What are we going to do now if we can't tell anybody?" Violet asked.
Webby smiled. "Oh, I told someone," she said.
Violet had a confused expression. "How?"
"Secret code."
...
After sparing, Huey and Katie were hot and sweaty. She took a big drink of her water bottle. "So, you want to do something fun?" Katie asked.
"I thought sparing was fun," Huey said.
"Well, yeah, but something more fun," she said.
Huey smiled. "Oh, okay, what?" he wondered.
Katie led him back to the kitchen. "I heard they were making cookies in here," she said, looking around to make sure no one was looking.
"Cookies?' Huey questioned. She nodded.
"Yeah, I think Amonia Pines made them. Anyways, I want some so let's go get them," she said. She crept up to the counter and grabbed the plate full.
"Are we allowed to have these?" Huey asked.
Katie shrugged. "Probably not, but that's part of the fun!" she grinned.
"But what if we get in trouble?" he questioned.
"Like I said, part of the fun!" She started to hand him a cookie.
"What kind of examples would we be if we just broke all the rules!" Huey said, waving his hand desperately.
She raised an eyebrow. "Examples? To who?" she said.
Huey stopped and thought a minute. Then he took the cookie from her. "No one!"
Katie soon discovered Huey had a bit of a sugar problem.
"Woo! No rules!" he shouted running through the halls.
Katie didn't know what she had gotten herself into. "Huey, could you just sit still for a second?" she asked politely.
He stopped running and nodded incredibly fast. "Okay!" he exclaimed. He kept shaking and his pupils were larger.
"Inside voices," she giggled.
He went on nodding. "So what should we do next! Should we get more cookies!" he said, ignoring what she had said.
"I think you've had enough," she said, taking a step back for safety. He jumped up and down.
"Are you alright?" she questioned.
"I don't know, there wasn't sugar in those cookies, were there?" he wondered.
"Well, they were cookies," she said.
"That would explain it!" he said jittery.
She waved a hand over him. "So how do I stop... all this?" she asked. He started doing jumping jacks in place.
"I don't know. It'll wear off in a minute or two, but until then let's go jump off some tall stuff! Or we could build a rocket, fight a mummy, climb up the Eiffel tower, discover something that doesn't exist, or give a monkey a shower!" he cheered. The speed at which he spoke was incredible.
Katie glanced around the hallway he was running through. Papers and furniture were strewn all over the place. Not to mention several crooked paintings, some even on the ground broken. "We should clean this up before-"
"Katie! Huey! What happened to the hallway!" Katie flinched at the voice. "He sees," she finished.
She spun around to face Bradford Buzzard. And it was just the perfect time for Huey's sugar rush to wear off. He stopped jumping and stepped next to Katie. His face turned red and he looked at his feet. Bradford put a hand to his forehead. "What even happened?" he asked.
"I did it," Huey confessed.
Katie took a step forward. "No, grandpa, he was sugar sensitive and we got into the cookies. But I encouraged him. It was my fault," she said.
Huey's head shot up. Grandpa?
Bradford sent the two away while he got some eggheads to clean up the mess. They sat on her bed. Huey swung his legs back and forth.
"So, Bradford is your grandfather?" he asked.
Katie nodded. "Yeah, I know. It's weird cause I'm a robin and he's a vulture. But my mother was a robin and my dad, his son, was a vulture. It's a confusing family dynamic," she explained.
Huey gave a chuckle. "Yeah, my family tree is confusing too," he smiled. He looked down at his hands. "Well, it was," he added.
Katie set a hand on his shoulder. "My parents died when I was really young in a car accident. What happened to yours?" she asked.
"Oh, my family's not gone. I- I ran away," he said.
She frowned. "Why'd you do that? Or is that too personal of a question?" she said.
He bit his beak. "I guess I was just a little hurt," he said.
She smiled kindly to him. "Well, if you want I'll be your substitute family," she offered. She set her hand on his and she smiled up at him. He smiled back.
...
Skimming through his junior woodchuck guidebook, Boyd thought to himself. "Let's see if there's anything in here we could use," he thought to himself.
Gosalyn stared intently at his book.
Boyd could speed read through it due to his quick processor. "Okay," he smiled, closing the book after he had read through the entire thing. "There are several magical things listed in this, which doesn't really narrow it down," he said, twisting his beak disappointed.
Gosalyn held out a hand. "Can I see the book?" she asked. Boyd nodded and handed it to her. She took it, but she didn't open it up. Instead she held it close to her chest. "What are you doing?" Boyd asked.
Her face formed a naughty smile. She raised the book up in the air. "It's mine now! Hear me? All mine!" she exclaimed, running off with his guidebook. Boyd squinted after her, but she had already left the room.
"Well, that was weird. I guess that narrows down what could be effecting her," he said to himself.
"What was weird?" Gandra came from behind him. He turned to face her. "Webby, Violet, and I were playing some weird game I'm pretty sure they made up. But I was able to sneak away when they had an argument about the point system," she said.
"I think Gosalyn is being effected by some kind of magic," Boyd explained.
Gandra thought a minute. "Why do you think that?" she asked.
"She wasn't feeling so good so I scanned her. Do you have any ideas?" he asked.
She shook her head. "Nah, maybe you're just malfunctioning so you thought something was up with her. I wouldn't worry about it really," she said. She ruffled his artificial feathers and walked out of the room.
Boyd checked himself. He wasn't malfunctioning and he was certain something was up with Gosalyn. Was Gandra hiding something? Was Gosalyn right in saying she wasn't trustworthy?
...
Exchanging a look, Violet and Webby turned to one another. "Alright, she's gone. Are you sure your grandmother got the message?" Violet asked.
Webby nodded confidently. "Yup!" she grinned.
"Alright, who's the FOWL agent?" Beakly's voice came from behind them. The older woman stepped into the room and stood next to Webby.
"Told you!" Webby said.
"It's Gandra," Violet said.
Beakly raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure? How do you know?" she wondered.
"We found this in her pocket!" Webby exclaimed, showing her the FOWL card.
Beakly squinted as she examined it. "Girls, you may be on to something," she said.
Webby jumped to her feet. "So what should we do?" she asked.
Beakly put her finger to her chin. "We wait," she said.
Webby frowned. "Wait!? But that's not fun!" she whined.
"It's our best course of action so we can figure out her plans," Beakly explained.
Violet set a hand on Webby's shoulder. "We also think she could have something to do with the disappearance of Hubert. Webigail overheard her talking on the phone," the hummingbird added.
Beakly pat Webby on the head. "Great job, girls! You could be SHUSH agents yet," she smirked. Webby grinned widely. Violet and Webby shared a high five.
Gandra stood behind the door, listening to their conversation. The raven haired girl held her breath so she wouldn't give away the fact she was listening. When she heard Violet mention Huey, Gandra's heart stopped. She had to act fast or else their whole plan would be ruined.
In the living room, Gandra found Gosalyn sitting on the couch with a book clutched to her chest. She took a seat next to her. "Hey, Gos," Gandra began.
"It's mine! You can't have it!" the duckling shouted.
Gandra tried to calm her. "Yeah, no, I'm not here to take your book. But you know who is?" she said.
Gosalyn looked up at her. "Who?"
"Webby and Violet," Gandra said.
Gosalyn jumped to her feet. "Really? Not if I have anything to say about it! They couldn't take it from me if they tried!" she declared. The girl marched off angrily. Gandra leaned back on the couch and smirked. Her phone pinged and she glanced down at the screen. It was Bradford.
Dinner at the base. 6:00. DON'T be late.
...
Beakly had left the girls when she needed to have another conversation with the police and Scrooge.
"Okay, I know that we just made this game up, but I actually like it, so let's keep playing!" Webby exclaimed.
"Wait, we still need to figure out a point system. I think there's a page of that in the junior woodchuck guidebook," Violet said, looking around for her book. "Hmm, I've seemed to misplaced it," she said. Gosalyn walked into the room with Boyd's copy of the book.
"Hey, Gos, can we borrow that book for a second?" Webby asked.
Gosalyn looked from the girls to the book in her arms. "Gandra was right! You are all after my book!" she exclaimed.
Webby and Violet made confused faces. "What are you talking about? I'm pretty sure that's Boyd's book anyways," Violet said.
"Well it's mine now! And no one else can have it!" Gosalyn said.
Webby slowly approached her. "Gosalyn, you don't even like reading," Webby said.
"I know right? She's nuts," Violet commented.
Gosalyn held onto the guidebook tighter. "You can't take it from me without a fight!" she exclaimed, positioning herself in a fighting stance.
Webby and Gosalyn's eyes met. Webby let a smile cross her face. "Ooh! This is going to be fun!"
...
In his room, Huey put on some knew clothes Bradford had given him. His original ones were dirty from the night on the streets.
Huey changed into a black pollo shirt but kept his red cap. He wasn't ready to let go of it just yet. Huey grinned at himself in the mirror. Then his eyes turned to his braces. His mind wandered to what his brothers had said about them. He closed his mouth, not wanting to look at them again.
Shaken out of his thoughts, Huey heard a knock at his room door. "Huey! We're having dinner in five minutes!" Bradford called. "I'll be out in a minute!" Huey answered. He took in a deep breath and stepped out of his room.
After he found the dining room, he took a seat next to Katie. She smiled. "Hey Huey!" she greeted. He gave her a short wave. Bradford sat at the head of the table. Several people Huey didn't recognize sat at the table. A chicken with a steal beak, a heron with a mechanical arm. One person Huey did recognize was Funzo. He was a little surprised but realized it made sense since their base was in Funzo's Fun Zone. He also took note of Dr. Akita, whom he had met in Tokyolk.
Several platters were set on the long table. Katie turned to Huey. "This is your welcome feast!" she explained.
Huey was about to ask who the others were when someone burst into the room. "I'm sorry I'm late, director Bradford! I just got your text and I had to find a subtle way to leave," a girl said. Huey looked to the door and his eyes widened.
"Gandra!?" he questioned.
Gandra looked at him and smiled. "Oh, hey red," she said. Huey just left his mouth open, unable to put his words together.
Watching Gandra, Huey was amazed. FOWL had been under his nose this entire time. Funzo's was their base and Gandra was an agent. Not to mention Bradford was part of Scrooge's staff.
Huey was snapped out of his thoughts when Bradford tapped a glass with a spoon. "Agents of FOWL, today we celebrate a very special new agent, Hubert Duck!" Everyone around the table clapped for him. The red loving duckling blushed, not used to so much attention.
"To Huey!" Katie said. "To Huey!" the rest shouted in response.
Huey was amazed at how everyone cheered for him. Back at home, it was, "Ugh! Huey! Can you just stop with your nerd stuff!" or, "Huey, it's not that big of a deal that I just broke your microscope. You can just buy a new one." Dewey had no clue how expensive those things were.
Bradford looked Huey in the eye. "Huey, I am sorry your family didn't see your true potential." he said. Huey fiddled with his thumbs in his lap. "But I hope you can see everyone here at FOWL as your new family," Bradford added.
Huey let a smile cross his face. They spent the night eating and talking. Katie took up the majority of Huey's conversations.
"By the way, I like your braces," she said.
Huey's face lit up. "Really?"
"Yeah, I think they make you look cute," she smiled.
Here's what Katie looks like:
