Chapter 8
Gandra finished blending her smoothie up and put it in a cup. She shook it a bit, the green liquid sloshing around. She was in her kitchen, sun pouring in from the window. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes. She out the smoothie cup on the counter. Her eyes wandered to the Possession stone next to it, a chip taken off of it. One sip and Huey would be under the spell of the Possession stone. She put away her blender. She frowned at the bent up steel blades.
"Bradford better buy me a new blender after all this. Does he know how hard that stinking rock is?" she said to herself.
The next step of her plan was to get him to drink it. She was surprised when she arrived at McDuck mannor to find a handful of cops along with Gizmo Duck. She walked up to him. "Hey, suit! What's going on?" she asked.
"Last night, Huey went missing. We think he might have been kidnapped," he said, changing his voice a bit to preserve his identity. Gandra clenched her teeth. He wasn't even there!?
"That's terrible!" she said.
Gizmo Duck nodded. "We're doing an investigation. If you want, you can keep an eye on the kids," he suggested.
"Sure," she said going inside. Sitting on the couch were Violet, Gosalyn, and Webby. Gandra took a seat next to them. "Where's Dewey and Louie?" she asked.
"They're out with Donald and Della looking for Huey while we have our own mini-investigation here," Webby said. Violet showed Gandra their clues spread out all over the table. It wasn't much. Just a map of Duckberg along with a few random belongings of Huey's.
Boyd came from upstairs. "Hey guys! I found something!"
The robot boy handed what he found to Gandra. Her eyes widened when she saw it was the FOWL business card. Boyd held his hand out for her to give it back. "Hang on, let me get a good look at it," she said. She turned away from the kids so they wouldn't see her switch out the card. She handed it back to him.
Violet took the card from Boyd. "Boyd, I don't think this is evidence. It's a gift card for Starducks," she said.
Boyd glanced at the card confused. "That's weird. I must be glitching or something," he said.
Gandra smiled relieved.
They were interrupted by a loud slurping. They all turned to Gosalyn who was drinking Gandra's smoothie. "Gosalyn!" Gandra exclaimed. She tensed up and took the cup from her.
"What?"
"You just drank my smoothie! You don't drink random people's stuff!"
Gosalyn just shrugged. "You're not random, I know you," she said.
Gandra face palmed and sighed. She had an uneasy expression. "Do you... feel different?" She smiled awkwardly.
Gosalyn shrugged. "No. Am I supposed to? Do you have cooties or something?" the girl asked. Gandra waved her hand and rolled her eyes.
...
On the streets of Duckberg, Dewey and Louie were searching for their brother.
"Huey!" Dewey called.
Louie sighed. "What's the point? We've been out here for several hours! We're never going to find him!" he said.
Dewey ignored him. "Huey!" Some people on the sidewalk gave him weird looks. "We can't give up! We need to find him!" Dewey said.
Louie looked down at his feet as they walked. "I'm not saying we give up. I'm just saying that I don't think we're going to find him," he spoke sadly.
"Don't say that! We will," Dewey said, smacking his younger brother in the arm. "We have to save him from whoever kidnapped him!" Dewey added.
"But what if he wasn't kidnapped?" Louie said.
Dewey stopped. "What are you talking about?"
"What if he..." Louie choked on his words. "What if he ran away?"
Dewey frowned and his eyes began to water. "How can you say that! Huey would never run away!" he snapped.
Louie rubbed his arms. "I would if I had brothers like us," he said.
"..."
"..."
"Louie, are you crying?"
The duckling in green wiped tears from his eyes. "What if he ran away because he hated us?" he cried.
Dewey set a hand on his brother's shoulder. "We don't even know if he ran away! Huey wouldn't do something like that! And why would he hate us?" Dewey's sadness was turning into anger.
Louie pulled away from him. "Because we're jerks! We just ignore him. We make messes and expect him to clean it up! We made fun of him when he needed our support!" Tears went down his face.
Dewey's beak quivered. "Louie. I don't want to believe that he would abandon us like that," he said, trying to put on a brave face.
"Why not? Everyone else in our lives abandoned us at one point or another," Louie mumbled quietly.
Dewey caught what he just said and clenched his fists. "Quit it! We'll find him!" Dewey sobbed.
He shoved Louie. Shoving turned to pushing and pushing turned to punching. "How can you just say that Huey doesn't love us!" Dewey rammed into Louie. He shoved against him. They pushed each other back and forth, holding each other's hands. Dewey slipped and expected for Louie to push him over.
To his surprise, Louie hugged him. He broke down sobbing, which just made Dewey cry. They shouldn't be beating each other up when they needed each other. They held each other tight, for fear of losing another brother. Neither of them dared let go. The two boys laid on the ground crying. Dewey curled into a little ball on the park grass.
"Do you really think Huey would just leave us?" Dewey cried. His face was stained with tears. He threw his hands over his eyes.
Louie was flopped out across the grass. "I really don't know, but I have faith in him," he said.
...
"Gosalyn, are you alright?" Violet asked. Gosalyn gave her a thumbs up, holding onto the table to keep from falling over.
"Are you sure? You don't look so good," Webby added.
Gosalyn nodded. Her head spun and her vision went fuzzy. "I told you, I'm fine... I... I... words are hard," she said. She looked like she was about to pass out.
Boyd helped hold her up. "Maybe you should sit down for a second," he said.
"Don't worry, it's just a headache! I'm good!" she said stubbornly.
Violet pulled out her junior woodchuck guidebook. She thumbed through the pages. "It could be a migraine," she suggested.
Webby watched the red headed girl. She was almost certain she saw her eyes flash green. She squinted, just to be sure.
Violet pulled her out of her thoughts. "Hey Webby, go get Gandra," she said.
Webby nodded and went out to the backyard, where Gandra was on the phone.
...
Looking around to make sure she wasn't being watched, Gandra stood outside in the backyard. The wind blew her hair in her eyes. She pushed it to the side and nodded to herself. She dialed a number on the phone and waited for someone to pick up.
"Well, did he drink it?" Bradford asked.
She clicked her tongue. "Well, yeah, that's the thing. He's not here!" she said annoyed.
"What do you mean he's not there!?"
"Just what I said. They think he was kidnapped, but I think all your talk got into his head," she said in a frustrated tone.
"He was supposed to come to us, not run away," Bradford said.
"And, another thing too," she began. "The red headed girl drank it instead," she added.
There was silence on the other end. After a few moments of thinking, he spoke. "Well, then I guess she'll be a good distraction, keep everyone from focusing on finding the boy."
Gandra tapped her foot on the ground. "So what are we going to do?"
"I'll take care of it. You can work on the girl," he hung up abruptly.
"Hello? Hello?" She looked down at the screen to find he was gone. "Idiot," she grumbled under her breath. She let out a sigh and held and hand to her forehead. Her job just got a whole lot harder.
...
Huey Duck soon realized he had no street smarts. Book smarts, yes, but not street smarts. He had slept on a cold dirty bench that he was pretty sure someone had thrown up on. The poor little duckling cringed at the thought of anything gross, so maybe running away to the sketchiest part of town wasn't the best idea.
He tried to figure out what to do by turning to his Junior Woodchuck Guidebook, but there wasn't a section about running away, strangely enough. He was beginning to rethink his choice.
Graffiti marked up the walls of the buildings. Amounts of rubble crumbled off the old establishments. A few children his age and younger used an outline of a corpse for hopscotch. A teenage couple stood in the alley, smoking a pair of cigarettes. Huey let out a cough from the smoke. Glancing around, hue looked up to the mansion on the hill. Going back didn't seem like too bad of an idea.
A rat came up to him. "Hey, kid!" he hissed.
Huey spun around. The rat was hunched over and had scrawny limbs. Huey pulled his arms in and tucked in his tail. He backed away slowly.
"You wanna buy some watches? The money goes towards saving the penguins," he said.
Huey tweaked his beak and continued to back away. "Uh, no thanks," he smiled awkwardly.
The rat came closer to him. "But what about those poor, poor penguins?" he said, trying to make Huey feel guilty.
Huey spun around and ran. The rat chased after him. Huey ducked into an alley way and panted heavily. He searched for an escape route, but it was a dead end. He turned around to find the rat creeping up on him. The rat grabbed for Huey's backpack and the two had a tug a war. Finally, the straps broke and the rat ran off with all of Huey's belongings.
He frowned. "Dang it!" he said, kicking at a pebble.
Suddenly, he heard a humming noise he knew all too well. Turning around, he saw the small spherical robot come around the corner. It portrayed the hologram. Huey took a step back. "Hello again, Huey."
Huey hesitated.
"What's wrong? Not happy to see me?" the hologram asked.
Huey bit his lip. "I guess I'm surprised," he said.
"Surprised? Why?"
Huey rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, the first time I met you I thought you were just a figment of my imagination," he laughed awkwardly.
"I'm real Huey," the hologram assured him.
"Well what do you want this time?" Huey said, rolling his eyes.
"The same thing I wanted last time. I want you to work for me," the hologram said.
Huey crossed his arms. "I told you, I don't want it." The duckling in red turned to walk away.
"But Huey, look what you've already done. You've ran away from your family," the hologram persisted.
Huey stopped. "I'm not fighting my family!" he said.
"Tsk, tsk. Alright then, if you want to take your chances out here, with no belongings, no place to sleep, no where to call home..." the hologram said.
Huey thought a minute. He knew deep down he wouldn't last long in the streets. Look at what had already happened so far. He knew Louie or Dewey probably could, but not him. He turned around to face him. "Let me guess. You would give me all those things?" he questioned.
The hologram nodded. "That and more."
Huey thought a minute. He didn't want to go against his family. "I already told you, no!"
"Why? Because you don't want to hurt the ones you love? Huey, they don't love you back. You're always overlooked unfairly and you pretend it barely stings. But it stings, yes it stings. But here at FOWL, we didn't overlook you. You have potential in our eyes. But your family doesn't love you. And you can't tell me they do, or else why did you run away?"
Huey clenched his fists. Taking in a deep breath, he spoke. "Fine. But if anyone gets hurt, I'm done."
The hologram grinned. "Alright then. My drone will show you to our base. The hologram then faded away in disappearing pixels. Then the droid flew behind Huey and pushed him along.
After a while of following the bot, Huey looked up at where they were. He turned his head puzzled and raised an eyebrow. "Funzo's Fun Zone? I thought you were taking me to FOWL headquarters?" Huey questioned.
The drone just pushed him into the building. Huey glanced around the establishment confused. He followed the drone through a door to the manager's office. It began to click in Huey's brain. "Wait... Is this FOWL's base?" he asked.
He pulled out his red phone. "I have to tell Dewey! He would go nuts if he knew this was-" The drone zapped Huey's phone out of his hand. "Hey!" the duckling in red whined. He frowned as the phone sizzled and let out an electric snap.
The drone went over to the desk and pressed a few buttons on the desk phone with a mechanical arm.
Suddenly, the bookshelf wall opened up into an elevator. Huey bit his lip excitedly. How often did someone get to do something as cool as this? The drone showed Huey into the elevator. The duckling rocked on the back of his heels. Something tugged in his stomach. Was he doing the right thing by joining them? He let out a calming breath of air. As long as no one got hurt, he would be alright.
Taking in the area, Huey bit his beak to keep from squealing. The place was a huge hollowed space with gadgets and random training equipment. A few agents of FOWL and eggheads worked on stuff around the room.
"Wow, this is amazing," he gasped. He followed the robot through the base. The drone showed him to an office and Huey stepped in.
"We've been expecting you, Huey," someone said, facing away from him in a spinning chair. Huey recognized the voice from the hologram. They spun around the chair to face Huey.
"I know you! You work for my uncle!" Huey exclaimed when he saw Bradford Buzzard there. The vulture nodded his head and folded his hands on his desk.
"You know Huey, FOWL has been keeping a closer eye on you than you thought," Bradford smirked, reclining in his chair.
He offered the seat across the desk to Huey. He sat down.
"So what exactly do you want me to do here?" Huey questioned.
"Well, for now just get comfortable. A drone will show you to your room, but right now, I need you to sign this." Bradford passed a piece of paper Huey's way. A contract. Huey scanned it over. There wasn't anything he disagreed with, at least he didn't think so, so he signed.
The drone led Huey to where he would be staying. The room was small and had a twin sized bed. Next to it was a desk. Huey let out a sigh, remembering that he actually didn't have anything to put in there. He sat down on the bed and his mind went to his brothers. He had been so sure that they didn't care about him. He let out a sigh.
Some noises down the hallway pulled him out of his thoughts. "Katie! Get out of here!" He heard running footsteps.
A girl his age slid into his room. He watched her curiously. She spun around and let out a yelp when she saw him. She was a robin with brown feathers and the tips of her hair dyed black. She wore a black short sleeve dress and clutched a book in her arms. Huey gave her a short wave.
She bit her lip. "I'm sorry, I didn't know anyone else was in here," she said. Then she struck her hand out to him. "I'm Katie," she introduced.
Huey shook her hand. "Huey," he said back.
Katie blew her bangs out of her face.
Huey decided to try to make small talk. "What book is that?" he asked.
She glanced down at the black book, then back at him. "Edgar Allan Poe, he's my favorite author," she explained. She thought a minute. "I don't think I've seen you around here," she said.
He kicked his feet back and forth on the edge of the bed. "I just got here," he said, looking down.
She smiled at him. "I'll show you around," she offered.
...
"You think Gandra what?" Violet asked.
"I think she might be involved in the disappearance of Huey!" Webby said.
"And you think this why?" Violet wondered, raising an eyebrow.
"I heard her talking to someone on the phone, and I think they were talking about him," Webby said.
"Did they actually say his name?"
Webby bit her bottom beak. "Well, no, but we've been betrayed by Gandra before! She was working for Mark Beaks," she said.
Violet thought a minute. "Well if what you say is true, what do you think happened to Huey?" she asked. "And why are we hanging out in the closet?" Webby had demanded they spoke in the cramped spot.
Webby waltzed in circles. "It's called setting the mood, Vi," she said. "And she said something about words getting under his skin."
"You think someone convinced him to run away? Do you think Huey would do that?" Violet asked.
Webby shook her head. "Not unless he had a good reason," she said. She jumped up. "We must start an investigation!" she cheered.
"Aren't we already having an investigation?" Violet asked.
"No, it's an investigation within an investigation! It's like a super investigation!" the girl in pink smiled.
"Alright then," Violet said with an emotionless expression. "What about Boyd and Gosalyn?" Violet wondered.
Webby put a finger to her chin.
"I think Boyd is trying to feed her soup and she's not having it, so I it'll just be us," she said.
The two girls smiled to each other. "So, can we leave the closet now? It's a little stuffy in here," Violet said.
Thanks for reading and thanks for the support!
