Chapter 33
Ladies and gentlemen, here it is! The final chapter...
Katie and Huey followed behind Drake along with the rest of the family as he whipped out a device. "We can figure out where they are with this."
"What's that?" Katie asked curiously.
Cheeks turning red, Drake rubbed the back of his neck. "I may or may not have put a tracker on my daughter." He shook himself. "Uh, but that doesn't matter. We have to get to them and save Gos, stop Bradford, and turn off that machine."
Gosalyn had never been particularly nice to Katie, but the Robin wanted to save her just as much as anyone else (a small portion of her just to prove that she was in fact a good person). She nodded, picking up her pace. "If we could save Huey, saving Gos will be a piece of cake." A quirked smile spread on her face to Huey.
"And we should probably hurry, these earthquakes are only getting worse." Even as he spoke, the earth rumbled under Huey's feet.
"Right down this way!" Drake said pointing.
Taking the turn, they burst into a stairwell, spiraling upwards into forever. Louie frowned, leaning against the railing. "Just HAD to be stupid stairs." He pouted before taking the first steps with Dewey behind.
"Yeah, this is going to take ages." Beakly rolled her eyes and picked up the boys along with Webby. She threw them onto her back and started running up the stairs.
Figuring that there were easier ways to get up, the others decided to do similar. Lena swapped to her super sorceress mode, she used her magic to hoist her sister along with her up to the roof. Boyd collected Gyro along with Owlson while Gizmo Duck took care of Della, Donald, Scrooge, and Owlson. All that were left were Katie, Launchpad, and Drake. He knelt down for her to climb on his back. Once she was on, he jumped up the steps two at a time, Launchpad following behind.
Once they made it to the top, they burst through the door to the roof. "Surrender, villian!" Drake shouted, narrowing his eyes at the vulture.
"It's over Bradford! Give up!" Huey jumped off Beakly and took up a fighting position.
Bradford glared at them, the earthquake machine just a few yards behind him. Over his shoulder, the sword of Swanstantine was tied to his figure. With him were also Steel Beak, Black Heron, his brothers, and a small handful of eggheads. All that was left of FOWL. Gosalyn came from behind the machine, her face ecstatic.
"Dad!" She charged towards him for a hug, and Katie slid off his back before she could get caught up in it. Gos squeezed him tight before breaking apart. She caught Katie's gaze, and the redhead's expression changed. "Katie... You're here."
"Yup." Katie bit her lip.
Gos frowned, but not for the reason Katie thought. "Dang it, I didn't even have to go on my own! If I had just stayed put, I would've found you, and then Bradford wouldn't have even gotten the code!"
"You were looking for me?"
"Well, uh, to apologize."
"You can do that later, lass," Scrooge said, moving to the front. "Right now we've got to deal with Bradford."
"Oh yeah Scrooge?" Bradford grinned. Katie's heart shuddered as he looked somewhat insane. What had happened to the grandfather who had raised her. She shook herself, reminding herself he had always been like this. She just hadn't seen the red flags until now.
"Easy, we just break it!" Gizmo Duck raised his arm, ready to launch a laser. The weapon barely made a dent.
"That's all?" Bradford chuckled, his eyes stuck to the family.
"I thought that would go better," Gizmo Duck said, somewhat embarrassed.
"Only I have the speech code to turn it off! So, if you want to shut it off, I have a few conditions."
"What do you want, you vexatious vulture?" Scrooge tapped his cane hard on the ground. Katie found he looked much more heroic in person.
"All you have to do is sign the papyrus." Bradford slipped out the cursed papyrus from his pocket, a smirk on his beak. "On it I have written a detailed contract. You will be magically and legally bound to never adventure again, thus protecting the world from all the dangerous things you bring upon it."
Heart stinging, Katie wondered if it wasn't too late for her grandfather. "Please grandpa! This is wrong! You think Scrooge is hurting the world with his adventures, but you're only adding to it. No one wants this!"
"Silence girl!" She saw a rage in his eyes she'd never seen before. "So Scrooge, what will it be?"
A thunderous shake made them fall to their knees. The earthquakes were becoming harsher. A chinch of the ceiling under Huey broke apart. He began to plummet to his end with a yelp. Katie lunged forward and caught his hand before it was to late. She tugged him back to not-so-solid ground with a grunt.
He let out a sigh. "Thanks."
"No problem," she said with a blush.
"I suggest you hurry." Bradford stepped forward, only putting the family more on edge.
...
Looking to his great uncle, Huey frowned. "What are we going to do?"
"I don't-" Before Scrooge could finish his sentence, the city rattled again.
Huey took several steps back from the hole he had nearly fallen into before. His eyes darted to Bradford and the machine. The vulture seemed unfazed expression wise, only determined on the Ducks' demise. Huey frowned. This was his fault, his other half telling Bradford where the journal was. In the end, the journal hadn't mattered, but Huey had played his role as pawn to perfection, allowing Bradford to finally strike. This was unraveling poorly. But Huey would make that up. He clenched his fists, determined. He would make sure.
"You're going down Bradford! You've done enough!" Huey charged at Bradford without another thought. He flung his fist forward, leaping up. Fights broke out with the other FOWL and Duck family members.
Stepping back, Bradford deflected it with his forearm. Huey went on trying to land some sort of hit on him, but Bradford managed to duck past all of them. The older bird caught his ankle, dropping him back.
To his surprise, Huey was caught by Dewey. Louie moved in front, blocking a swing from Bradford.
"Thanks." Huey smiled before the thought of all the things he'd done to them came to mind. "Brothers again?" he offered hopefully.
Dewey grinned while Louie fought back Bradford. "Of course! I mean, what, you think we're heartless brothers that try to kill each other?" The blue triplet smirked at the joke.
With a sigh, Huey rubbed his forehead. "I'm never gonna hear the end of that, am I?"
"Nope!"
"Hey, it's like you said," Louie added. "We're the Duck boys! Good or bad, we do it together!"
Huey smiled warmly, joining his youngest brother in the fight. "Right. I love you guys." It was nice to have a family again.
"Shut up! Your family will fall apart literally and figuratively, whether or not your uncle signs that contract!" Bradford's eyes were wide with determination, a crazy grin split across his face.
While Bradford was distracted with the two boys, Dewey ran behind him and crouched down. Stumbling back, the old bird tripped backwards, landing hard on the concrete ceiling. Dewey jumped up, letting out a small cheer.
"Enough!" Bradford burst, kicking Dewey in the gut from his spot on the ground. He jumped back to his feet. Towering over the triplets, he crouched towards them.
He whipped out the sword, glowing with power. A bright flash of light appeared, and once it had faded, Bradford was decked out in black and red armor. Raising the sword over his head, he slashed it downward. Dewey rolled out of the way while Huey and Louie jumped back.
"This is tougher than I thought." Louie gave a scared frown. "Maybe taking on Bradford wasn't the best idea."
"We've got this." Dewey gave an encouraging nod to his brothers before charging at Bradford again, foot first.
He landed the kick only for Bradford to come back around and elbow his side. Turning to Louie, he grabbed the boy by the collar of his shirt and threw him up. When he came back down, Bradford jabbed him with the hilt of the sword. In one swift movement, Bradford caught Huey by the wrist and held him over the side of the roof.
"Game over, Huey."
Another earthquake came, making Bradford wobble a bit. Huey's heart raced as he wondered the chance of Bradford just dropping him by accident.
"We're not done yet!" A rock hit the back of Bradford's head. He whipped around to see Louie, who had grabbed a chunk of the roof that had broken off with the quakes. Dewey smirked.
Grumbling, Bradford tossed Huey at his brothers, knocking all three boys down. The vulture prowled towards them, hate in his eyes. "Insufferable brats!" He smacked his sword down, missing the boys only a hair. The ground cracked with impact.
That seemed to be the final blow along with the ever growing power of the earthquake machine.
The ground below them shifted again more vigorously, this time completely crumbling the roof. The floor split beneath them, loud cracking thundering in their ears. An opening broke beneath Louie. The green triplet let out a shout, and at the same time, the others' footholds came from underneath them.
"Louie!"
"Dewey!"
"Huey!"
They grabbed onto each other's hands tightly. Huey shut his eyes, too scared to watch the ground hurtling towards them. Fear dug its way into his body. He couldn't lose his brothers, not again. He would keep them safe. That was his job. No, that was what he did to show he loved them. No one was forced him to do it. He loved them and they loved him. No one was putting up with anyone. They were family.
When no impact came and Huey's heart had just about stopped with anticipation, he wrenched an eye open. They were surrounded by a blue light, and he knew. Lena had saved them. She flew through the falling rubble, trying to catch as many people as she could. Gizmo Duck and Boyd also helped save the family.
The earthquake machine was still going, caught up on a twisted piece of stairwell. The other FOWL agents were nowhere to be seen. They had either run off, knowing they were defeated, or- Huey glanced down, unable to see the bottom of the stairwell. That.
Bradford was barely hanging on to a piece of railing, just below the machine. Fire was in his eyes, glaring up at the family. "No! No! This wasn't supposed to go like this! You're supposed to lose, McDuck!" He narrowed his eyes at Scrooge. "You're a danger to society!"
"Maybe next time, don't put ye earthquake machine on a roof!" Scrooge called, suspended midair with blue magic also.
Bradford snarled, trying to climb up the railing. A loud creak came as the earthquake machine began to slip forward.
Katie's eyes widened as she watched the potential situation. "Wait, grandpa, please! Stop fighting!" She was sitting up on Gizmo Duck's shoulder. "You're my family."
"You have no family, girl. You've made that perfectly clear!" Bradford snapped.
She flinched, eyes beginning to water.
"Wrong!" Gosalyn was on Gizmo Duck's back. "She's got us!"
Bradford ignored her, still trying to climb up. He grabbed on a weak metal bar for the railing. The machine only slid farther. It moved slow, then faster. Bradford let out a scream as it hurtled forward, echoed by the fatal creak that meant his demise. It landed on top of him, knocking him down, down, down.... CRASH!
Katie covered her mouth, eyes wide and hot tears on her cheeks. Huey frowned for her sake.
They remained in the air, quiet from shock. An empty quiet. But it slowly changed into one of morbid victory.
"Come on team," Scrooge finally spoke. "Let's go home."
...
Click.
"Huey Duck speaking." Huey held his phone up to his ear, relaxed on his bed. He had been reading when his phone rang.
"Huey! Heeeeeeey," came Katie's sing song voice on the other end. "How've you been? Just wanted to check on you since it's been a month and all since we took down FOWL..."
Raising an eyebrow, he side glanced at the calendar pinned to the wall. "Really? I hadn't been keeping track."
"I guess that's just how my brain works." She chuckled lightly. "Since, ya know..." her voice turned soft, but Huey could still hear her. "That was the day my grandpa died."
"Katie, I'm sorry-"
"Don't be." He could hear her trying to perk up. "There's nothing you can do about it anyways and he brought it on himself. It's okay if I'm sad."
"Alright then." He bit his lip, unable to think of something to say after the dark tone. Shifting in his bed, he turned onto his stomach, hugging a scarlet pillow. "Let's move onto a lighter topic. How's your new family?"
"The Mallards are great!" Well, that seemed to make her feel better. "Gosalyn is a super cool sister and Drake is a great dad. It's just everything I've always wanted. I finally feel home. They've invited me on their super hero missions, which is cool. But I think I kind of prefer being the guy in the chair."
"After begging to go on missions since forever?"
"Well, I still go on them sometimes. I just find the safer ones are the ones where I stay home."
"Because you're not in the way of danger."
"Whatever," she said laughing. "So, how about you? What have you been doing?"
"Uh, well, moving back into the mansion was a little weird at first. I loved being back in my own bed, but everyone was sort of awkward for a while. We were all sort of sensitive with each other. Dewey said it was so no one would 'join the dark side.'" With a smirk, Huey rolled his eyes. On the other end came Katie's chuckle. "But we realized the problem wasn't offending each other, but communication. So we talk out our feelings and stuff, but we still have fun. Surprisingly, Louie and Beakly don't like talking out their emotions that much, but they eventually get over it."
"That's cool. I'm going to make a sandwich while we talk." Shuffling came on her side, presumably the sandwich making.
"A lot of apologies went around too. A lot of mistakes were made." His voice became solemn.
"Yeah, I was there for that part, remember?"
Huey nodded, even though he knew she couldn't see him. "Right. It's just so nice to be home."
"Agreed," Katie said.
And once again, all was right with the world.
(A/N also everyone went to therapy and worked out their issues and trauma and they lived happily ever after!)
We're finally here, at the end! Thanks for sticking around and supporting this story. To all my readers, you guys are the best! You're so encouraging and help me out, even when I'm feeling low!
