Chapter 26
I'm sorry I haven't updated in soooo long 😅. Thanks for putting up with me. On with the show!
Gosalyn paced the foyer of McDuck Manor. She bit her beak nervously, a million scenarios playing in her head. Her heart pounded in her chest. "What if he was going to come here, but he was stopped by a horrifying squid monster!"
"Unlikely," Violet said, sitting on the stairs. Webby sat next to her, leaning her head in her palms.
"What if his future self came back and tried to stop him from coming back because if he did, that would somehow lead to the end of the world!" Gosalyn threw her hands up in the air, panicked.
"That's a big leap," Webby said, raising an eyebrow.
"You never know!" Gosalyn stopped pacing and started biting her nails. "Maybe he ran into that Gizmo-suck, and that's why he's late!"
"Isn't Gizmo Duck a good guy?" Violet asked. Webby waved her hand, warning her not to continue.
"Ha! In your dreams! Gizmo Duck is the worst!" Gosalyn stuck out her tongue to punctuate her point.
Webby stood up and put a hand on the red head's shoulder. "I'm sure your dad is fine. He'll be back soon."
"Right. He's tough." Gosalyn nodded, more to herself than Webby.
At that moment, the doorbell rang. "I'll get it!" Gosalyn shouted, though she didn't really need too. She ran for the door and threw it open. There she saw Darkwing, and in a split second, she jumped on him, knocking him on the ground. "Dad!" She wrapped her arms around his neck.
He groaned and smiled back. "Hey Gos." He ruffled her hair.
Webby and Violet stood in the doorway. "Dad?" they said in unison.
"Yeah, yeah, my dad is Darkwing Duck. Whatever. I told you guys we had nothing to worry about," the spirited duckling said, glancing at her friends and waving her hand. The other girls rolled their eyes.
Webby looked to Gizmo Duck. "Did you find anything out about where Huey might be or what FOWL's doing?" she asked, tilting her head.
"Uh, sorta." Gizmo Duck rolled into the house and dissembled his suit, revealing his identity to everyone in the room. Fenton shrugged at Darwing's reaction. "Eh, pretty much everyone already knows at this point. Anyways, we found out Gandra is working for FOWL."
"Already knew that," all three girls said in unison.
Fenton turned pink. "Oh. I guess I was the only one out of the loop." He stared at the ground a little disappointed.
Darkwing closed the door behind him and Gosalyn. He took off his hat and mask. "But I also saw Katie here. Guess you were right about her Gos."
Gosalyn's heart sank. Webby shot her a look. Gos avoided eye contact. "Actually dad... I wasn't. I kinda... pushed her to go back there. We got in an argument, and I sorta ruined everything."
"We both messed up," Violet confessed. Gosalyn smiled.
Drake glanced between them. After a moment of Gosalyn dreading what he would say, he rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, that's better than her returning on her own. At least there's a chance that she's still on our side." That made her feel a bit better.
"That's one way to think of it. So what took you guys so long?" She worried that she sounded scared, so she added, "Not that I was worried or anything." Her dad smirked at her. "Just curious."
Fenton talked with his hands. "Well, there was this whole egghead fight club, and they took our stuff and made us fight to-"
"Is that a black eye?" Webby raised an eyebrow at drake, who did indeed have a purplish mark around his eye.
"I have Gizmo dork to thank for that." Drake rolled his eyes.
"Sorry."
"Come on dude. It was supposed to be fake fighting."
"Sorry." Fenton smiled nervously. Gosalyn gave him a glare that made him show visible fear. A warning. Success.
...
Katie's woke up with a throbbing headache. She groaned, trying to sit up. But she couldn't. Her body felt sore and a loud ringing burst through her ears. She felt like throwing up. She tried to remember what had happened, but it was all fuzzy, like a bad dream. Her stomach knotted. She could only think one thing. I'm probably going to die here. She tried to voice the thought, but it only came out as a mumbled slur. And it only added to the vomiting sensation. Sh swallowed, her tongue feeling numb.
She shut her eyes tight, trying to make some cognitive thought. Huey... She remembered him... kinda. She opened her eyes again, processing what she saw. Nothing. She was staring into pitch black. Like... Like... Like how she felt. Nothing.
She started making little pictures of nonsense in her mind's eye. She didn't understand any of it. She chuckled at herself, but that just made her stomach churn again. She puffed up her cheeks to keep from vomiting. Think... Think... Her mind was like a haze. She bit her beak.
She tried sitting up again. Her muscles responded this time, but they still ached. She rolled over on her side and pushed herself up on her elbow. She held herself up for a moment before her head spun and the headache increased. Ow... This time she gave in and threw up a bit. She wiped her beak and let out a breath of air. What...
Her memories began filling in and she started to be more aware. "Huey," she mumbled. He had locked her in here. She saw a hate and anger that she hadn't seen before. She held her head in her hands, trying to will away the pain. She remembered what he'd said, and to be honest, he had been right. She felt the back of her head and fond dry blood. Katie groaned again.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. In pain, she unsteadily forced herself up. She uselessly put out her hands to keep balance. She stumbled to the door and leaned against it. She shook her head, trying to block out the spots in her vision. She sunk to the floor, the dizziness overtaking her. She would have to wait until her grandpa sent someone to get her. And until then, she would suffer.
...
Boyd stepped onto the sandy beach with Owlison by his side. "If I'm correct, this should be the island." He glanced around, looking for any sign of his thought-to-be-dead friends.
Owlison wrung out part of her jacket, splashed on by sea water. She ran her hands through her hair, then put her hands on her hips. "Alrighty. Where to first?"
"I'll survey the place then come back when I find them. Then I'll fly you over and we can find a way out of here." She nodded and Boyd smiled. It felt nice to be able to talk again.
He transformed his feet into rockets and flew over the trees. He zoomed in his view and turned up his hearing. He could hear the family's soft mumbled to the left. He turned his head, seeing their faint figures in the distance. Once they got back to Duckburg, they could fix everything.
"Over there," Boyd said, looking down at Owlison and pointing. She gave him a thumbs up and nodded again.
He hovered down to her and scooped her up wedding style. She yelped a bit from how fast he flew. They landed just out of view from the McDucks.
Boyd couldn't contain himself and took off towards them the second he set Owlison down. "Mr. McDuck! Louie! Dewey!"
Louie was the first to see him. The green triplet's face lit up at the sight of him. "Boyd!" They hugged each other tight. "Thank goodness you've come to save us! I thought I'd be stuck eating weird island food forever!"
Dewey stood a few feet away. "Hey Dewey!" The middle child simply waved. Boyd raised an eyebrow at him, but shook himself. "I've brought Owlison with me and we're going to get us all back to the city."
"And then we can figure out all this FOWL business," Della said, putting her hands on her hips.
Owlison came to stand by Boyd. She smirked. "I miss the days when if you had a problem with someone, your first reaction wasn't to kill them." She gave a soft chuckle.
"Did you guys bring a boat or something?" Donald asked, sitting in the sand.
Owlison rubbed the back of her neck. "Well, we had brought a helicopter, but Bradford sorta blew it up."
"Ugh, if I ever see that man again, I might blow him up." Della rolled her eyes and crossed her arms.
"Also, Mr. McDuck, I owe you a helicopter."
"How will we get back to the mainland then?" Beakly asked.
A lightbulb went off in Boyd head. "Hey, I've got an idea."
"What?"
Without answering, the robot boy flew off back towards Duckburg. He went as fast as he could, using a good chunk of his fuel supply. In a few minutes, when he returned, he used his super strength to push a boat from the docks to the island.
He landed on the sand, grinning. "Ta-da!" He stretched out his arm, displaying the boat for the family.
Launched looked over it. "Oh man, I can't wait to crash this thing."
"Which is why you will not be driving." Beakly shot the pilot a look.
"Nice job, laddie," Scrooge said, ruffling Boyd's artificial feathers.
"Are we ready to re-enter civilization?" Louie smirked.
The family boarded the boat with Owlison and Boyd. He took a spot next to Dewey and Louie. Dewey seemed a little distant, making Boyd curious.
After fending off Launchpad, Donald took the wheel and directed the boat back towards the city.
After an hour or so of sailing, Dewey had fallen asleep and Owlison had gotten sea sick a couple of times. Louie sat next to Boyd, cozied up in whatever was left of his hoodie.
Boyd saw this as an opportunity. "Louie?"
"Yeah?"
"What's up with your brother?"
"Which one?"
"Uhh... Dewey."
Louie looked down and fiddled with his hoodie strings. "We got in a fight about... stuff. And since then he doesn't want to talk to me or anyone else."
"Oh." Boyd bit his beak and drummed nervously on his legs. "Is there anything I can do to help."
"Probably not. I find it's best to just let him be." Louie sighed. "I want to let him be. To try to fix it would mean we'd have to bring up the stuff we talked about in the argument, and right now I don't really wanna talk about hi- I mean it. Stuff."
Boyd tilted his head. "Him?"
"I just- I said I don't want to talk about it, okay?" Louie frowned and played with the hoodie strings more aggressively. "Dewey's fine. I'm fine. We're all fine."
"Okay, if you say so..." Boyd wasn't sure he was fine. But he decided to let the issue rest. He tried to focus on the positive. They were getting the Ducks back. Something was finally turning around.
...
"What did you do to him?"
"Oh nothing, that's the interesting part."
Steel Beak crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow at Black Heron. They stood in the hallway of FOWL. A window into another room was to the right. It was a two way mirror, and on the other side was a cage.
Steel Beak had been surprised to hear that the same beast that was snarling in the other room was the same kid who had gone on that mission with him. It kinda made him feel bad for Huey.
Kinda. Sorta. Maybe.
"Are you sure you didn't use him in some sort of experiment of yours?" Steel Beak still had his doubts.
"Well, I did, but that wasn't what caused this." Black Heron smirked. "It's really quite impressive. He went from responsible kid to savage animal in mere moments."
"Well, it probably didn't help that we locked him up in a dark room for several days and killed his family."
"Steel Beak, you're so simple minded."
Well no one asked you, he thought. He internally rolled his eyes at her. But he wouldn't say that out loud. For all the times she'd called him stupid, this woman was a little on the insane side.
"I believe Huey has a case of split personality disorder. It kind of explains his behavior at the woodchuck tournament when he left that girl to be killed by that bear. Or why he kept talking to himself." Black Heron smiled like she was the most brilliant person in the world. Man, Steel Beak hated that grin.
"So he's like two people at once?"
"That's a dumbed down version, yes." Steel Beak clenched his fists.
"What are you going to do with him?" The rooster glanced back at the window, watching the boy. He sat at one corner of the cage, glaring at the mirror with his blood red eyes. He growled like a viscous dog. Steel Beak looked away, feeling intimidated.
"Oh, I have no clue, but he'll probably just be something really interesting to study. I usually don't like pets but..." She smiled at the window. It felt weird to hear her refer to Huey as a pet.
"Don't you think it's kind of unfair to him?" Steel Beak surprised himself with this statement, but he didn't take it back.
"I'm sorry, I thought you were an evil FOWL agent?" She narrowed her eyes at him. "Since when do you care what I do with my experiments?"
Steel Beak rubbed the back of his neck. "I dunno, it's just..." Despite how much he didn't want to admit it, he had grown a small soft spot for him. Not enough to stop this, but enough to feel bad for Huey. He had been the only one to not call Steel Beak stupid. And that was already a step better than anyone else.
"Please don't tell me you're going soft. My, it seems like everyone is around here."
"No, I'm just saying, the kid's ten."
"Well maybe he could live a normal life if he were born to a different family. Too bad." Black Heron shrugged and started to walk away. "Watch yourself, Steel Beak."
